Will never forget Bill Mazer doing his sports report on CH 5 while Wayne was maybe in 9th grade and saying that Kareem should enjoy himself now because there is a kid coming along that will be taking over (or something close to those words).
The LI Press was writing about McKoy playing for Elmcor as early as the 6th grade or so. Surprised he didn't end up at Power Memorial.
Prior to attending LuHi, Wayne went to grade school at Redeemer Lutheran in Bayside. He was in my older brother's class. As you might imagine, our grade school basketball games were always jam packed. His grade school coach was a man out of Chicago named Bill Rietschel, who also taught 8th grade at the school. Bill was patient and kind, a good coach and definitely likely had a big influence on Wayne going to LuHi.
As for Wayne himself, he was as polite and nice a kid as you would ever want to meet - no doubt as a result of his upbringing. His Mom was a spitfire! Seemingly half his height, but believe me, she took no prisoners! She was a wonderful woman and was constantly around the school and involved. A genuine positive influence not just on Wayne, but on all of us.
Even though our time at St. John's overlapped, I never saw him on campus. I was buried in St. Al's in the Pharmacy School, and I'm sure Coach Carnesecca kept him busy over at Alumni Hall. I ran into Wayne only once after his St. John's years and we got to talk for while - I was happy to see that he hadn't lost his smile. I am sure it served him well in the years since.
