Nurideen Lindsey

Unfortunately many on this and other message boards continually proclaim recruits they have never seen play "can't miss" only to have the recruit disappoint.

Recall that preseason last year many on this site were predicting Lindsey would be "all world" at St. John's being a one and done to the NBA.

Unfortunately Lindsey was not "all world" but rather was "all bust" and is now headed to mid major Rider College.

Lets hope that none of St.John's incoming recruits this season are disappointments like Lindsey, Alpha Bangura, James Felton, Ricky Torres, Jermaine Maybank, Heath Orvis and several others that were thought to be "can't misses".

I have a problem with Jermaine Maybank being on this list and anyone questioning his attitude. Jermaine messed up his knee before he got a chance to play here. While he was out, he was always cheering his teammates. He graduated in four years and then went to Kansas St. He played there and is has played professionally in Australia. He was never built up to be a program changer.
To label a young man who got hurt, never complained or whined about his misfortune, graduated on time, attended grad school and played at Kansas St, then played professionally in Australia as someone who is a bust and has a bad attitude seems totally nonsensical to me. I view Jermaine as a success because of where he came from and the fact that he had the perseverance and determination to accomplish his goals, not yours or mine.

I do not think we were questioning Jermaine's academics or his character but addressing OTIS's "can't miss" label. None of these players were going to be program changers and I do not recall any being in the top 100 in HS rankings. Unless a player is a top 50 player, he likely will not be a can't miss or change any program. I met Heath and he was a great kid....with a great name...LOL!
Lav, on the other hand has signed at least 8 top 75 players in 3 short years. That is unheard of at a school like SJ that has been a Big East cellar dweller for most of the last 20 years. Starting this year, and going forward, SJ will be a perrenial "top half" in the Big East instead of bottom feeder.
Enjoy it while it lasts with Lav because in a couple of years, he will be a hot coaching commodity and our track record shows we will not pony up just as we did not with coach Kim.

Actually, James Felton was considered a top 50 player. I believe Torres was in the 100-125 range when he came outta high school.

To be honest, I think the powers that be will be able to "pony up" the bucks to Lavin. I could be wrong, but I think the administration probably took for granted what Coach Barnes Arico did for the women's program. They probably felt they could get someone else who could do a comparable job.

I doubt they do the same when it comes to Lavin.

There were definitely guys on the board who warned us that Torres plateaued in 10th grade. I actually thought his best position here would have been "undersized backup PF," since he was too slow to compete.

Anyone who thought Maybank would be a star coming in chose to ignore the numbers from his previous stop.

I can't remember anyone thinking Orvis would be a star.

Anyone who saw Felton get abused by Brand as a senior in the Garden would have known to temper expectations a bit. I was right under the basket, and it was ugly.

Nuri scored a ton in the Philadelphia Public league, which doesn't happen by accident. I think he'll put up a lot at Rider if he ever learns to accept coaching.

Dink, you are right about Felton as he may have been a ranked player back then but he was a total bust once he got to college (s). Torres I made a point of catching a couple of his HS games as a senior and was so underwhelmed I wondered why we would extend an offer. I guess being desperate at the time for a NYC player played a role.

Felton was on the team for less than a month. Too small of sample to say he was a "total bust," IMO. I thought he went to have a decent career at Fairleigh Dickinson, if I'm not mistaken.

You're probably correct in saying Torres was probably a benefactor due to Roberts badly "needing" a player from NYC.

Marcus ... Lindsey's entire playing career is full of "what ifs". There is not much of a demand in the NBA for undisciplined players who can drive the lane but lack an adequate outside shot.

Long time posters will recall the pre season excitement on this site about transfer Alpha Bangura (his name sounded like a destination on Star Treck) and the unwarranted confidence by many posted regarding 3 point shooter Heath Orvis before reality struck that he was a D2 type player.

Below is a link to a tragic story about former St.John's signee, a top 25 national recruit, who failed in so many ways to met lofty expectations of college stardom which others set for him.

It's amazing that when you think of the classic "busts" of the last 30 years (we're talking guys projected to the NBA in high school, and never even being impact collegians), it seems the MAJORITY of them can be traced to one school and one coach - Duke and Krzyzewski. McD All Americans like Taylor King. Taymon Domzalski. Casey Sanders. Michael Thompon (not Mychel from Minnesota), Chris Burgess, Greg Koubek, Crawford Palmer, Martin Nessley, Joey Beard, Sean Dockery, Eric Boateng....and borderline guys like Billy McCaffrey, Nate James, Ricky Price, Lance Thomas.

Lot of reasons guys don't make it to the pros. But you'd think a McD would have at least average impact at the college level.

I'm wondering how many of those guys were named McDonald's All-Americans simply because they committed to Duke.

I'm good friends with a guy who used to hang out with Crawford Palmer after he transfered to Dartmouth, and I will say that if he partied at Duke like he did at Dartmouth, it's no wonder he didn't get results. :p

That was some article on James Felton-kind of reminds me of the Lenny Cooke saga. One note about James Felton-went to Puerto Rico when we played there in late 90's and attended Thanksgiving dinner party with the team at their hotel and James was the friendliest kid on the team and engaged my friend and I in lengthly conversation. RIP big guy.

A Nurideen Lindsey thread?
What's next, a Eugene Lawrence thread? Or maybe a Sean Evans thread? How about Donald Emmanuel...

Hey, any thread that winds it's way to letting me mention Taymon Domzalski and Taylor King is Okay in MY book! ;)

Thought the waiver referred to him not being required to take a jump shot. :)

Clearly he was in foul trouble. And jsj's link showed that he hit the FTs to seal the game unlike vs. Texas A&M.

Nuri is the star of that team. Good for him.

Nurideen is grossly overrated and I still have a hard time wishing him luck.

Understandable.

Kid has been through a lot in his life. I'm not going to sit here and hold a grudge or hope he fails. If basketball at Rider or wherever is keeping him sane, good for him.

I have no issue with him leaving.

Its the way he left and the the things him and his posse said while heading out the door.
