Nova Game

Sanchez better be the next cooking of Lebron James. This team needs allot of help.

One will be surprised how one can look after a season under the belt and offseason workouts. I don't ever believe Pointer nor Garrett will be good shooters, but they can improve. Actually, Pointer did improve his shooting a bit. Obekpa also improved, as well. Maybe, he also adds something in the offseason.

Maybe, next season Sampson can add some range on his shot next season, as well. He can already hit it from 15'-17'. Adding guys like Sanchez and, hopefully, Harrison will pay off. They'll bring a skill set to the team. We still could end up getting a 5th-year guy in Gift.

Just too bad we didn't have Gift this year but that is water under the bridge. On paper we should be better next year but we have to find a consistent shooter, whether it be Harrison, Green or who ever. Also a bit concerned about recruiting. Are we involved with many recruits even in the 14 class? Most of the scouting services don't mention we are and I am concerned we may be losing too many kids in one year and be starting all over again.

Very disappointing season. Branch is a fraction of the player we all hoped he would be. It's amazing he was ranked so high since he can't shoot well, has average athleticism, and is a combo guard. He turns the ball over way too much.

Is it just a coincidence that Pointer, Garrett and Branch were ranked so high and have done little? Where is the player development?

They are sophs...give it a rest.

How many Big East tournaments has St. John's gone to and left one and done?

Too many times for my taste. I also remember Carnesecca bowing out in the first round of the Big East Tournament quite a few times in the late 80's.

This is what concerns me. The staff is gonna have to seriously make their bones in the '14 class. I know we are on several kids (I'm sure the casting net will get wider), but we're gonna have to really strike on a few of 'em to sufficiently balance out the roster.

I realy think that any team that has a good run in D 1 hoops has to have a few good three point shooters. Harrison could be one if he can get his act together but Borgault, when given the chance has been disappointing. I do think that Lavin needs to find an x and o guy cause how else would you explain Lavins success with lesser talented players in year 1?

You are kidding right? Do you even read what you post?

Bourgault looked to be coming on during our first game versus Notre Dame. Not so much, afterwards. Too hit and miss.

He had smarter players. He also had a reliable point guard. Not to mention, he had players who was playing with a sense of urgency, considering it was their last hoorah.

Huge issue, don't want to be rebuilding every two years. I couldn't take it! Lol

Very very hard to win without:
Any penetration!
No one hitting wide open looks
No rebounding
No flow on offense
Really bad substituions
No harrison
Garrett without a clue
Jones getting crap minutes
Marco not having to try and create for himself
Bad timeouts
Jakaar forcing shots
Phil dribbling like crazy!
No offensive sets
No Sanchez or gift
No true pg on the horizon
No room on staff for x and o guy
Losing all 50/50 balls
What else did I forget?

Crap Game, Crap Season.... I understand they are young but I really thought heading into this season we had a chance to make a little noise; what we have, unfortunately is a team that in my opinion looked worse in their last game of the season than they did in their first game of the season...

Branch and Jakarr, just awful tonight... Branch seemed so unsure of himself it was disturbing. Didn't want to shoot, didn't want to penetrate, didn't let teh game come to him...
Pointer, nonexistent... they called his name like three times all game
Greene at times hits a big bucket but mostly throws up low percentage shots... reminds me of combo of Eugene Lawrence and Cedric Jackson...
Marco is another guy that seems tentative to shoot.

Lot of work to be done on the offseason... Hate to say it but this team needs Harrison back, hopefully he can mature to not be such a selfish player on and off the court.

Two bright spots at the end of the season IMO, Chris Obekba seemed to improve a lot this season, and Christian Jones seems to have gained some confidence... Jakar should remember this game as inspiration for next year; if he had even the slightest chance of coming out, that went down the toilet tonight.

There is always next year I guess...

1 word to desribe this game and season. Dissappointing. We did not lookj good, except at the end of the 1st half when we went on the run,. had a lot of intensity.but we lost it in the 2nd half. Many difficiencies w this team nexy year theyll be a year older w some additions. We will see.

I just got back from the game. We had our chances. We missed too many free throws. The Lavin time out killed any momentum we had or were about to. There is nothing about our recent play that deserves any post season tournament. The Marquette effort was an anomaly. I hope the following happens in the off season:

Lavin has better substitution patterns
Harrison works on his defense and attitude
Sampson gains some weight and lengthens his shot range
Obekpa develops a post game
Branch learns to be a triple threat
Greene works on his shot
Sir Dom works on his mid range game
Garrett too
Bourgault becomes more active in the offense to get him shots

And everyone needs to work on their free throws

interesting because I think Branch is one of the least of our problems and don't think he is a combo guard

I wish that Lavin would stop saying " young team". Good run. I guess that Archiediocono thinks he plays for Duke trying to get all those offensive Foul calls.

Just think next year Lavin can't say that we're the youngest team in the world, youngest team in the country, right out of Montessori. Give it a break coach. And while you are at it recruit shooters. Also work with your assistants on establishing some semlance of an offense.

If anyone had told me that Garrett was a top 100 HS player, I wouldn't have believed them.

Amen. I watched him in Nevada; scored on rebounds from the weak side. Didn't shoot well but it's obvious we weren't recruiting shooters.

Branch missed Bourgault open in the corner. He was open for a brief second. He would've had enough time to get off the shot, if Branch passes the ball.

Even the few times that Branch and Greene penetrated they never looked at an open Bourgault. Is it safe to say Lavin doesn't practice this? Just watch the good teams with good coaches, the penetrating guards know exactly where the three point shooters are.

i don't understand lavin's timeout.

Neither did the announcers. If you have the momentum why stop play or give Nova time to work on breaking the press. Did not make any sense. Please don't tell me Lavin called it to get Pointer back in the game. He really needs a bench coach.

I am not one to be negative about the team, and have always stood by the "give them time", "they are young" mantras....But one thing I can't stand is a lack of effort- and that is what was on display tonight. In the first 10 minutes Nova yanked about 3 possessions right out of our hands, were aggressive on D and the first ones to a loose ball- cause they wanted it more. I'm used to seeing missed shots or a bad pass- i can tolerate that, I dont think we have the shooters so i can't have an expectation that we will be draining shots all over the floor- but knowing that, this team needs to bring an Intensity every possession every game. After the Marquette game- I was proud of the boys and proud of the fight they brought to the court. Today...BE tourney? I didnt see anything that showed me they wanted to win.

The two games I most enjoyed watching were actually losses, Providence and Marquette (gluten for punishment i guess lol) but the way they played in those games as a cohesive unit- made me excited about the future and the direction we were going...but a game like today really puts a bad taste in my mouth. Lavin may not be the X and O guy we want him to be, but there needs to be fight, toughness, grit instilled into these guys- and that comes from the top down. I am a young fan so I only hear the stories of lore about Mullin/Jackson/Berry etc- but I loved watching SJU with Artest/Barkley/Glover/Postell- those guys were bullies and didnt back down- game to every game ready to play. This current team has it maybe once every 5 games or so....seems like we take 1 step forward and 2 back. I dont see drastic changes happening to the roster in terms of personnel, so hopefully Lav n Co can instill some fortitude to bring it every game and leave it all out on the court for next season.

Thoughts for next yr: We are going to need Sanchez to be the player he has been billed to be. Jakarr- good rookie season- add some bulk and consistency to that jumper, and please start driving in to the hoop more. Phil- an egnima, but I actually like him, and we are going to need him if we want to not only get to 20 wins but make a run next year. Hopefully Hooper is the shooter we think he is...cause we need one. Amir- I feel as though he is a good kid and thank him for working to get cleared and his loyalty to the program, but dont think hoops the road for you, 6'6 lefty pitchers who throw heat get paid a lot of $- focus on that. Obekpa- great year, really all we could ask of you, work on the fundamentals- FT shooting, boxing out, a semblance of a low post game and you will be real special- excited to see him develop. CJones, Gift, Felix- improve and bring it next season. D'lo- please get your head straight, like it or not, this team is better with you. Branch- play with confidence and he should be fine at the point.

Sorry for the rant- the team frustrates me- must mean I care ha. SJU 13-14, Big things! what do us Met fans say.... Ya gotta Believe!
