Not Aprils fools joke

Glad you guys are fine Mike. I am also in the Andean region, but luckily Bogota is 9,000 feet high so likely not in the path of a tsunami. Have a safe return trip. PS. what was the name of the burger place in Bogota? I heard about an awesome place in the Texaco station across the street from my hotel.

El Corral. Great burgers

Same place my guy recommended. The one closest to the hotel is in a gas station. I don't think I will have time to get over there. I could skip a $60 steak and head over there instead.

Did you go to Club Colombia yet ? we went there for lunch again on our last day in Bogota.

Get the burger also if you can stuff it down. It's worth it :) But definitely don't pass up the $60 steak

Crazy thing is yesterday Nathalie, myself and her dad were walking around downtown Lima and we went to this local restaurant which looked like a dive and had the most ridiculously awesome 2 course lunch which was flat out off the hook peruvian food and the total bill cost me $14 U.S for all of us.

Right now going across the street from our hotel for the best Ceviche in Lima at Punta Azul. I book this hotel each time specifically because it's across the street from the restaurant and you need to get there at 11 or else you will be waiting 2 hours on line to get in and I don't wait in lines for anything which is probably why I'm a St Johns fan because there is never enough fans for lines.

How much longer you in Bogota ?

And try the club colombia beer brand and if you can try stopping ny a bogota beer company bar afterwards. They let us do a tasting of their beers. Pretty good stuff but I liked the club colombia beer the best. ( I don't think it's related to the restaurant )

In Bogota for today. Tomorrow I get to take a private plane and helicopter to an oil field then back home. I haven't a chance to do any touristy stuff.

We cancelled club Colombia and went to Harry sasson instead and it was amazing. Not sure where we are eating tonight. I have drank plenty of club Colombia beers and have 6 hours to kill tomorrow night at the airport so I'm sure more will be consumed.

You there for work Conor?

Yup. I should have built In a couple of extra days.

what area you staying in ?

Mike in the financial district. I think 75th and 9th?
Ahh ok we stayed next to Virrey Park which was calle 88 and 15th. Between the park 93 area and between zone T. Both those areas are great for nightlife so if you can sneak over to Zone T after your dinner there are a couple of bogota beer company bars :)

Time to go walk off my Ceviche lunch

Is there any truth to his statement about Lavin's illness causing Gathers to renege? I don't recall. No offense to the author, who meant well and is entitled to his opinion, but IMO he doesn't make a very persuasive argument on Lavin's behalf.

Disregard. Meant to post on "Letter to Monasch thread". Glad to hear you're OK MJM

I could be wrong, but am of the impression Gathers's brother brokered a better deal. Lav illness may have contributed to the delay in committing as well.

Glad you are fine MJ!

MJ, I'm a little late to the game here, but just read through this thread. Sounds like quite an ordeal. Glad to hear you and your group are okay, and it's great to see that you're back to posting like nothing happened. Enjoy the trip.

Mike - Restaurant rundown. We went to La Mina 3x's which is supposedly one of the top 10 restaurants in Bogota, but it wouldn't be a top 20 steakhouse in NYC. Dinner last night was Harry Sasson which was one of the best meals I've ever had. Tonight was Andres D.B. which is more of a club and a show, but the food was still very good. I don't know the name of the restaurant we went to for lunch in Medellin, but it was also very good.

hey thanks again and I'd like to let everyone know individually how much I appreciated their best wishes on this thread. I would have responded to each one but I didn't want to be redundant.

Thats what make this website so great. We might argue about whatever but in the end we are 1 big family and I really appreciate the thoughts from everyone. For a little while it was kind of crazy yesterday especially when the phones went down but there were a bunch of people looking out for me and for that I feel real lucky so thanks again to you all

Sasson is supposed to be awesome but we didn't go. Andres was so highly recommended but Nathalie and I are low key type people and I didn't want the whole spectacle thing. Hey if you get a chance because I forgot can you buy in the airport 2 bags of juan valdez coffey ( ground up ) and I will give you the money for it. Get 2 different flavors but have them ground it up in the airport after you get thru customs. If you can't do it no big deal but if you can I can pick it up this week and give you the $ for it

Glad you guys are okay. My in-laws are from Bogata...we are going get our son his Colombian passport soon since his mom was born there and live in Bogata until 4th grade. Every member of her family was kidnapped and held for ransom at one point. Crazy place.

I should be able to do that.

We didn't have any issues this time but I was traveling with a pretty large work crew. They said security is much improved.

Damn that's crazy. We heard a lot of stories of crazy stuff like kidnappings etc. Honestly Colombia I don't think I have been ever more careful of my surroundings. Even mores than when we went to the west bank in the palestinian territory. As Gman said security is much improved but we were wanted many times don't take taxis on the street. So we had the hotel arrange transportation to and from airports and we would also have restaurants call taxi service.

Our hotel would even go out and write the taxi license plate and the persons name down of the taxi that was picking us up which made me feel pretty good. At our hotel the ex colombian vice president was staying there so there was even extra security but walking the streets I never really felt threatened or anything.

The only time I got nervous was walking downtown after visiting La Candelaria when the sun went down and it was rush hour and couldn't get a taxi to ride back up town. That's when we took the bus and the bus was safe and packed but when I got stuck next to the 80 year old guy who peed on himself. lol

Driving into the countryside I thought I'd be nervous but our driver was awesome and that was actually my favorite part of the bogota trip.

Cartagena I never felt uneasy. Was like a spanish new orleans. Had no problem walking the streets at night

Overall Colombians were really friendly. They don't see a lot of American Tourists so they were all really cool to us.

Friends we made down there in Cartagena( Ironically from NY ) met this guy on their flight to Bogota who was Colombian and he was so happy to hear they were going to Bogota before Cartagena that during their stay in Bogota his family pretty much adopted them and took them to their house and took them everywhere during their stay in Bogota including driving them out to the salt cathedral about an hour out of Bogota.

That was pretty cool I thought

Too bad you couldn't get to Club Colombia because that was the place ever Colombian recommended to us but I definitely wouldn't say it was one of the best meals I have ever had except for that ajiaco soup.

The colombian street food was off the charts good though. We had the funnest time hanging out with locals just standing around some of these street carts ( 2 in particular not far from our hotel ) eating areas and these these other things kind of like a egg roll but bigger and stuffed with rice, egg and a couple of other things.

For us when we travel the best way for us to start to get to know a county is when we try some of their street food when we see a lot of locals eating at it

You definitely have to get to Lima because even the Colombians admit that Peru has the best food in south america. Their work with fish is cutting edge awesome. And most places are so damn cheap :)

The truth can now be revealed.. mjmaher was sent to Peru to scour the Courts AND RETURN WITH A 18 YEAR OLD, 7 FOOT PERUVIAN WHO scores with a impossible to defend hook Shot!

Alas. the quake and tsunami has detoured Mike from his mission and what can he do but, stay safe and enjoy the best of the cuisine..

Return soon.

The most disappointing part of this whole thread. Maher, you gotta grind your own beans.

I'm glad you're okay and that only a few Chileans perished in what could have been a much worse disaster.

But Chris Obekpa just announced he's transferring. From St. John's.

So you know, you may want to think about what's important in life and whatnot.
