Not a lot of LoVe(tt)

Why worry about stuff that might happen? Stop killing my buzz! B)

Some will crucify me again but word is Marcus LoVett will be ineligible. There is also talk that he will not be the only one.

Argh! One step forward and then 2 steps back. Disappointing!

Dear RI
yes disappointing but still promising and doable! Our future is bright and Chris' very first year should be exciting no matter our final record!! So many positives thus far and relatively few setbacks IMHO.
Thanks for your post.

"Relatively few setbacks?" In the last two months we've lost Sampson, Jordan and obekpa. We now find out Lovett is likely ineligible and possibly sima.

Short of having half the team suspended for sneaking out to a strip club and having sex with a prostitute, I'm not sure how mullin could be off to a worse start!

Frankly I'm fed up with Mullin.
We made a big mistake hiring him
Still bitter about them not hiring Rico Hines? :)

Mullin is doing his best to play the short hand of cards that were dealt him.

Lol, I'm not ascribing blame. But few setbacks? Really? By all accounts two of Mullins five recruits may be ineligible and the best two returning players have left the team. I think those qualify as setbacks

Maybe a way can be figured to blame Lavin on this one also.

Well in theory if you want to give him credit for Mussini you should also direct blame for Lovett.

Actually, it's an absolute reality unless you have the pick of the litter (like Duke) that you are going to recruit great basketball player with marginal or worse academics. Lavin should not have been excoriated for it (his main issue was not recruiting enough of a roster), and neither should Mullin.

Ugh, every time I start to get excited about this program something bad happens. Couldn't we have enjoyed the Mussini commit for a week or two before bad news. Hopefully we get a Rowan or Papa to commit soon. I guess getting Mussini was a much bigger deal than originally thought it would be. The kid will be running the show with I guess Ellison backing him up.

I was certainly one of Lavin's biggest critics and I did not start hot and heavy until year 5 when it became apparent he (for whatever reason) he was not putting in the time or effort to build a program. I respectfully suggest that Chris get a comparable amount of time; I can pretty much guarantee our cupboard will not be bare nor our teams dysfunctional or over-matched talent-wise (excepting Greene, Harrison, and Pointer.)

If we can lock up Rowan and a serviceable big man we can still be a good team come February with the pieces that we have. Getting Big Papa would be a dream come true but just getting someone serviceable at center would be ok.

I am with Mullin to the end but we are going to suck next year and at this point hopefully we will have 5 scholarship players eligible. He was in a tough spot but things are not going well. I have every confidence in the world that by year 3 we will start to see things trending the way we want.

But again those saying things are going well, I predict will be the first to turn next season when we stink. Understanding the situation we will be in is not negative but a willingness to allow this process to run its course. Things are going to be bad. In fact everything that we hoped could make this transition go smoothly went the wrong way. People need to understand that it will get worse before it gets better.

Welcome back! Always nice to her your insight.

Hence we are still seeing Rowan and Papa being mentioned.

If everyone was eligible we would still have room for the two of them.

You've been right on everything else. Hopefully, not on this one.

Any chance the guy(s) can make it up through summer courses/prep work?

From my understanding he's in deep water at this moment. Judging from his academic past it will be tough.

If we knew this was the case why did we not make a bigger push for Carter?

On this subject, here's where I have some confidence in Mullin.

As a player, Mullin never got a chance to choose his teammates. Still, here, he taught everyone by example how to play teamball, and guys fed off each other, and knew if they moved and got open when Mullin had the ball, Mullin pass up a shot and find them. I believe that Mark Jackson may not have become the pro he became if he didn't learn from playing and watching Mullin.

Now, this time around at SJU, Mullin gets to pick and choose exactly the type of players he wants on a roster. With a roster to fill, he didn't have a lot of time or choice to be as selective as he will become. If he recruits with the same precision he played, and if he can coach a bit, we are in for something special. I still believe we are - but year one he gets a total pass.

I think the upcoming season is going to be one that we have to get through. We may have a team that sometimes makes us smile and get excited and other times not so good (ugly) but each day that passes, gets us to a point where the coaching staff can work on recruits and fill the box with the kind of players that will will put us up where we want to be. I think we all would have liked it to be a faster process, but the fact that is that is not very realistic. Mullin and company have done a good job up to now, working hard to put a team on the floor this coming year. He has exceeded anything I thought we could look forward to, yes there are some warts, but he had to move fast in a short time.
I don't expect much this year, but look forward to the moves the staff make in the future.

How is it possible for someone to only hear negative news? Where was Mr Google for the Matt A or Slice signings? Durand Johnson, M'vouika, Ellison, Owens, Williams, Musssini, and Sima have all joined the team without so much as a whisper from the guy.

He claims two recruits might be ineligible, so where's the news on the other five guys that are presumably eligible? Certainly someone has been cleared.
