Nostalgia: red.fans edition

does anyone have a link to this shot? Don't think I have ever found it on youtube.

The Hatten free throws as time expired against Duke is on youtube, but i have never seen the Bootsy game winner at Cameron

Around the 7-8min mark is the Duke highlights. Best they got. At least the shot is in there.

Favorite regular season win:
1982 Hall of Fame Classic vs defending national champ North Carolina. Season opener for both teams on neutral court in Springfield, Massachusetts. #3 Heels returned super sophomore Michael Jordan and upper classmen Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and freshman Brad Daugherty. Our big 3 were soph Chris Mullin, and seniors David Russell and Billy Goodwin. But it was reserve Kevin Williams who forced overtime with a clutch jumper at the buzzer. Russell sealed the deal in OT setting the tone for a memorable season and eventual #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Toughest regular season loss:
Dec.2018 Undefeated 12-0 team at Seton Hall. Nothing worse than losing a game on a blown call. LJ Figueroa comes up with a game sealing steal, only to have three incompetent refs declare a timing error giving Shavar Reynolds the gift buzzer beater. But blowing a 12 point lead with 9 minutes to go, missing two front ends of one and ones in the final 30 seconds allowed the refs to put us in a position to lose the game.

Thanks for starting this Jack. Reminds me of the first St. John's game I attended in person. This was back in February 2002. St. Johns vs UConn at MSG. I was a teenager at UConn in my freshman year, and drove down for the game with 4 other UConn students (who were UConn fans obviously). Wild game. Calhoun got ejected in the first half and Dave Laitaio took over as coach. St. John's gave away a late lead, Caron Butler got fouled with 7 seconds left on a 3 pointer and hit all 3 foul shots to tie it. St. John's won in overtime. Huge game for Marcus Hatten. A "UConn sucks" chant broke out, as you can hear in the video below lol. Fun times!

Yes, that Seton Hall loss will always be remembered Incompetent refs! but great point make one of the free throws in the final 30 and game over

Not many were around for it but the 1959 regular season final between SJU and NYU was a battle for best team in NYC. SJU had Jackson, Seiden and Alfieri . NYU had a frontline of Sanders, Ramsey and BArden .Both rosters I believe were all NYC ball players who competed in the schoolyards, high school and now college.
NYU tied the game up in the final ten seconds but Tony Jackson made a 30 ft jump shot at the buzzer to win it. SJU went on to win the NIT two weeks later and NYU made the semi finals.
A newspaper article the next day described the game as the one that brought college basketball back from the 1951 point shaving scandals which had almost destroyed basketball in NYC and MSG.

Memo to self. GC62 won't need to show ID to buy his drinks at the next red fans party at Novita in Garden City :)

The video starts with highlights from our win at Duke (February 26, 2000)....

Losses tend to stay longer than wins. The most horoific that I was at was on February 17, 1980 versus Syracuse at Alumni Hall (now CA). Alumni Hall was filled to the rafters with SRO crowd (was the NYFD kept away?). WE were 7th ranked and Cuse was #2. Carter put us up by one with under 30 to go and then we got a Charge on Rencher for a 1 and 1 but he missed the front end. Cuse got off a long pass to Orr and as he crashed into Carter and shot to get and a blocking foul on Reggie. Anyone who was there will go to their grave knowing it should have been a charge on Orr. Louie was irate saying he didn't like the idea of the upstate official making the call!

Anytime we've beaten Duke. The Boo Harvey buzzer beaters. Whooping Ohio St in the Tourney. Whooping Maryland and Steve Francis in the Tourney. The Hardy tight rope walk game v. Pitt.

One of my favorite was the season opening OT win against a top 5 UNC team in either 1981 or 1982 Tip Off Classic.

They were up all game, then fell behind late and it looked bleak, but Kevin Williams sent the game into OT with a last second shot.

I was 11 or 12, and that game made me a diehard fan.

I was there. Dick Slomkowski from Fairport NY was the ref. It was a charge in 1980 and still is today. This game was a couple of weeks after the nationally televised Louisville game.

Ouch! Sounds like a case of a ref not willing to call 2 charges back to back on the same team.

Some of my favorites. Beating Uconn Duke and Pitt Lavins first year at msg because it officially ended the debacle of Norm for me. ( that's kinda how our 114 crew was born )

One of my all time favorites was 89-90 The Boo Harvey last second shot parade. My buddies and I go down to gtown. We were down the whole game and were fouling out and actually had Barry Millhaven playing center. Boo hits a last second shot to win the game. We were stunned then we went nuts.

I think the team bus got pulled over after that game down there. That was the rumor. We partied hard that night down there we all must have lost part of our livers that night

Worst loss the loss to Duke in the NCAA with the bogus tech on Billy Singleton

Worst player loss during ( timing of it ) DJ Kennedy
Yes the team bus did get pulled over by the Maryland State Police right outside of a toll area. All the bags got taken off the bus and sniffed by the dogs. After about 30 minutes the bus was allowed to proceed to NY.

Not sure if Mickey Crowley was part of the crew that day but he would have screwed us if Slomkowski didn't.
The refs that day were Mickey Crowley, Charles Diehl and Dick Slomkowski.
They screwed us before the infamous non call on Orr. We scored more FG’s than Cuse (30 to 26), but lost the free throw battle (11-18 to 20-30). As well as a technical foul called on the mild mannered Frank Gilroy.

Jesus espken, your memory is unbelievable.

That loss was so depressing that I left the house and walked around Prospect Park lake to try and recover. The win I enjoyed the most was the final of the NIT in 1965 when we beat Villanova for the championship and gave the Big Indian, Joe Lapchick, A fitting send off to end his career. In fact we played three of the best games we ever did displaying the versatility of that team. We ran Roston college off their feet winning 114-92. Next up was New Mexicon ,one of the highest scoring teams in the country, slowing them down winning 61-54. Next beating Army and then Villanova for the title. The Garden was rocking all that week. Glorious times!
