No Sympathy for Syracuse
There's been too many years of my life where Syracuse = NYC more than we did. So if the program completely dies, I'm OK with it. They are the ACC's problem now. I can't even remember if anyone else wanted them, but Cuse to the Big 10 always made more sense to me.
Good point and I agree wholeheartedly. Cuse would likely have thrived in the Big 10. More schools with similar identity and regional fan bases. Same goes for Pitt honestly. Those schools being so far out of their geographic base has hurt them.

The schools’ Presidents risked damage to the basketball program in exchange for enhanced $$ from football. They may have helped their treasury but they ironically hurt both sports.

There are not many 75 year olds coaching at any level. Over the past 4+/- seasons Boeheim’s teams have not played as crisp as prior years and the level of recruits has fallen. Any recruit today considering SU should be asked who their coach will be when they are a junior and senior.

SU should have taken a hard nosed business approach and not extended Boeheim’s contract after he was over age 70. Syracuse University never should have allowed Hopkins to leave for Washington.
Don't you think they'll give Hopkins a call when boeheim finally hangs 'em up? Although it's tough to follow in the footsteps of a legend, see SJU, gtown and others, Hopkins' ego might get the better of him and he'll want back in.

BTW screw cuse and yukon too.
I don’t think Hopkins will have any interest. He was spurned prior, Cuse has an uphill battle in the ACC playing out of region all the time and he’s originally a west coast guy. I might be wrong but I just don’t see it.
How was he spurned? He knew boeheim was leaving on his own terms and he decided to go West.

Despite what others are saying, I think he comes back if boeheim wants him to follow him.
They strung him along big time.
They totally strung him along and anointed him the successor. He was named head coach in waiting. Boeheim announced in 2015 that he would retire after the 17-18 season. When it looked like that wasn’t happening, Hopkins took the Washington job and Boeheim cancelled his retirement plans and extended his contract. I honestly think that was a big mistake and Cuse lost continuity and their successor in Hopkins and since then, Boeheim has become a lame duck with a declining program. That was their opportunity and now the product and cache is degrading. I see no reason why Hopkins would want it at this point. He’s in a good spot at Washington.
Thanks for the clarification. However, depending on how big Hopkins' ego is, I still think he'll come back if he's offered.

Totally agree.

From my perspective, I have two programs I hate and hope that they wither into irrelevancy... BC and Syracuse. Both tried to destroy the BE by chasing their own financial "windfall". I'd never schedule either of them willingly and they can't lose enough to suit me.

I'll always have a competitive dislike for G'town & Uconn but candidly, that is mostly driven by the fact that they've had more success than we have had in my lifetime. I still root for them out of conference and in the tournament. The only way I'd ever root for Cuse or BC is if their win put us in the NCAA tournament. Beyond that, those traitors can piss off.

At inception of the Big East I am not sure Buffalo was even Division 1, and of course, Syracuse pre-Big East was big time basketball and had notable tilts with SJU. (Remember Dave Bing's years at Cuse and Bob Lanier up with the Bonnies and Calvin Murphy at Niagara, and Ernie (no-D) and Marvin Bad News Barnes gun-toting at Providence. Gavitt definitely had Syracuse in the mix from the beginning. I miss having Syracuse in the Big East, what do we have in common (BB history-wise) with Creighton??

Bet if they picked Buffalo, then Syracuse would have been where Buffalo is today. They needed the B.E., I hope Syracuse never matter again, B.E. put them on the national map.

SJU =NYC
G-Town = DC
Nova = Philly
BC = Boston
Syracuse =???????????
I'm guessing you're not aware Boeheim's predecessor (Roy Danforth) won almost 68% of his games at Syracuse in his 8 years (1968–1976) as the head coach. Danforth also had a few deep tournament runs (and a Final Four appearance in '75) during his time at Syracuse.

You wanna know Boeheim's record before the Big East became a conference? 74-14 (1976-1979). Guess who won the Big East Conference in its inauguration (1979-1980)? Boeheim and Syracuse (advanced to the Sweet 16 as well).

To even mention Buffalo basketball in the same breath with Syracuse basketball is laughable. Syracuse helped make the Big East what it was than the other way around.
Guess I should have done research before typing.
Ya Reckon? Dave Bing thinks so too. ;)

Syracuse had been to 7 straight NCAA tourneys reaching 3 sweet sixteens and one final four before joining the BE as well, finishing in the top 15 four of those years .

I definitely agree, there comes time where you need to step down. I watch Boeheim, Roy Williams, and Coach K and I see coaches addicted to the lifestyle, adulation, and praise. It is as if their egos demand constant gratification. Power and fame are definitely addicting.

Looking at Politics, the same is true. The President and the leading challengers in the upcoming 2020 election are all at least 70 years old. McConnell who is running for re-election is damn near 80. These individuals are far removed from what is actually going on but are making decisions that affect the entire country.

Some successful people define themselves only by their accomplishments and can't live outside of the spotlight. I feel that coaches, politicians, and others should have a shelf life of 70 years old. Step aside and make way for those with fresh ideas and energy.

I am 71 years old and have been retired for eight years. My mind is not as sharp and I do not have the energy that I did 20 years ago. The only time that I did not work two jobs during my 40's and 50's was the two years I attended graduate at NYU school while continuing to work full time. Also during this time I was the Asst. Director of a highly successful AAU program. I mention this to show that at 71, the energy is not there to do and be as competent as I was 20 or even 10 years ago.

Paultzman and I are friends on Facebook we share pictures of our families, especially our grandchildren. I would not trade the time I have at this point in my life to be with my family for nothing in this world. Just the thoughts of an old man.

would someone set up a "no sympathy" poll.
some entries might be cuse, conn, gtown, pitt/bc.

full disclosure. I am 72 years of age. I play 2 softball doubleheaders a week. the league minimum age is 55.
the last 8 doubleheaders I have hit over 500 for each double header. extra base hits are rare for me.
I am lucky. my baby brother blew out both knees decades ago.

They can't lose enough for me. Make them play in MSG in front of their fans now. They certainly have been quiet.

Cuse also made a big mistake cancelling our series the last few years. We were beating up on them lately but at least there was interest in both sides from the fan base. Now they’re fading.

As is the money: millions per year. (Coach K is listed at $7+ million.)

And like a good number of us, you're not old, panther2 -- you're just less young.
