No Sympathy for Syracuse

The decline in Syracuse University’s men’s basketball is best explained by the fact that Coach Boeheim is 75 years old.

There are not many 75 year olds coaching at any level. Over the past 4+/- seasons Boeheim’s teams have not played as crisp as prior years and the level of recruits has fallen. Any recruit today considering SU should be asked who their coach will be when they are a junior and senior.

SU should have taken a hard nosed business approach and not extended Boeheim’s contract after he was over age 70. Syracuse University never should have allowed Hopkins to leave for Washington.

Agree they shouldn't have let Hopkins go. He turned Washington into a legitimate national contender...just imagine what he could've done taking over at Cuse. Not sure about the other point about Boeheim's age being the main reason Cuse is not a blue blood anymore. I think it has more to do with being in the ACC and out of the Big East. Their soul is still here, not in the ACC. Once they moved there, sure they had some surprise runs in the tourney, but if we're only talking about the regular season, they really haven't been that good relatively speaking compared to where they were in the Big East. There was a stretch they were in the top 10 nationally in the Big East for like 6 years. In the ACC they aren't a shoe-in for the top 25 let alone top 25. I think teams like UConn, Cuse, and Pitt found out the hard way that best conference fit and best financial decision are two totally different things.

The last time they finished the regular season in the AP Poll at all was 13-14 their first year in the ACC. Seems like a pretty good indicator that conference change at best knocked them down several pegs and at worst made them the new Pitt especially with Boeheim on his way out soon.

Boheim doesn’t know when to say when. And apparently, their is no one adult enough in the Syracuse room to find a graceful way for him to exit.

I also wouldn’t be a fan of him having his son on the team. Might be a little nepotism as the kid is not a great player. Glad I am not a Syracuse fan.

Could be time for us to make hey in the Syracuse Albany area. Saw the kid Joe Girard over the weekend. We should always get the NYS player of the year.

Why all the hate for Syracuse?

Pre- Yukon, the triple head of the "old" Big East was Georgetown, St. John's and Syracuse, and those were some pretty great teams and great times from my memory.

Looie going up against John Thompson and Jim Boeheim and more than holding his own, magic times. we won some and we lost some, but those games were great.

I can still recall like it was yesterday, sitting in the "blue seats" watching Ron Rowan's shot go in. Syracuse was a real rival, and beating them at the Garden and sending all of their LI fans home unhappy made for fun.

With them in the ACC, it seems like another Northeast school that is a round peg in a square hole. I feel sorry for them. Boeheim and most of their fans and the MBB purists would rather be in the Big East.

They got greedy, just like Pitt, and BC, and how are they doing now? Pitt was always ranked, it was great beating them when they were #3 @ msg. BC was also ranked a few tome when in the b.e.
Cuse, pitt, and b.c are nothing anymore, but hey, they getting more money now, so I'm sure they're happy.
Cash rules everything right?

Don't you think they'll give Hopkins a call when boeheim finally hangs 'em up? Although it's tough to follow in the footsteps of a legend, see SJU, gtown and others, Hopkins' ego might get the better of him and he'll want back in.

BTW screw cuse and yukon too.

I don’t think Hopkins will have any interest. He was spurned prior, Cuse has an uphill battle in the ACC playing out of region all the time and he’s originally a west coast guy. I might be wrong but I just don’t see it.

Age has nothing to do with the rotting of the orange but rather playing second fiddle to Duke, North Carolina. Plus playing in the great cities of the ACC and eating at the Waffle House.

Despite the character flaws at G'town, most here will always root for them against the Cuse, because the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Please don't ignore the contribution of Mrs. Fine to the Syracuse basketball team.

How was he spurned? He knew boeheim was leaving on his own terms and he decided to go West.

Despite what others are saying, I think he comes back if boeheim wants him to follow him.

They totally strung him along and anointed him the successor. He was named head coach in waiting. Boeheim announced in 2015 that he would retire after the 17-18 season. When it looked like that wasn’t happening, Hopkins took the Washington job and Boeheim cancelled his retirement plans and extended his contract. I honestly think that was a big mistake and Cuse lost continuity and their successor in Hopkins and since then, Boeheim has become a lame duck with a declining program. That was their opportunity and now the product and cache is degrading. I see no reason why Hopkins would want it at this point. He’s in a good spot at Washington.

The only Syracuse made it to big time basketball was because of the b.e., why did the B.E. pick syracuse over Buffalo, which is more popular? Bet if they picked Buffalo, then Syracuse would have been where Buffalo is today. They needed the B.E., I hope Syracuse never matter again, B.E. put them on the national map.

SJU =NYC
G-Town = DC
Nova = Philly
BC = Boston
Syracuse =???????????

I'm guessing you're not aware Boeheim's predecessor (Roy Danforth) won almost 68% of his games at Syracuse in his 8 years (1968–1976) as the head coach. Danforth also had a few deep tournament runs (and a Final Four appearance in '75) during his time at Syracuse.

You wanna know Boeheim's record before the Big East became a conference? 74-14 (1976-1979). Guess who won the Big East Conference in its inauguration (1979-1980)? Boeheim and Syracuse (advanced to the Sweet 16 as well).

To even mention Buffalo basketball in the same breath with Syracuse basketball is laughable. Syracuse helped make the Big East what it was than the other way around.

Guess I should have done research before typing.

There's been too many years of my life where Syracuse = NYC more than we did. So if the program completely dies, I'm OK with it. They are the ACC's problem now. I can't even remember if anyone else wanted them, but Cuse to the Big 10 always made more sense to me.
