NJIT Game

Maybe Amir's just mixing up his baseball and his hoops: he's aiming for the outside corners of the basket instead of trying to put it right down the middle.

This is why we have a dream team of coaches.
Our team is young, and very talented. But there's no question that we need to clean some things up.
For some guys it's free throws, for others it's boxing out or setting a better pick.
But Rico, Darrick, and Tony are supposed to be great at developing individual skills.

That's what we're dealing with here on a couple different fronts.
Everybody has things they need to work - they do that, and we'll improve as a team.

Do the players buy in? And can the coaches teach it to them? We'll see.

To answer the question of why C Jones hasn't been playing much-one reason has got to be his lack of rebounding.

IMO Jones isn't playing for the same reason all players don't play, there are only so many minutes and there better players in front of him. The whole rebounding thing is so much nonsense IMO, if we were playing short handed I would think his benching had some signifigance. Jones has decent skills but is just not ready at this point. Lavin has a history of putting guys on the floor to see what they have and that's what I think he did with Jones. I could make the same argument that GG is being red-shirted because he didn't rebound enough last year and it would be just as nonsensical. Jones was a gamble from Day 1, one Lavin thought was worth taking. Let's let the kid develop and then judge him.

Pretty much agree. Not to mention, I think he's a solid passer (possibly, the best) on the team.

Garrett should be shooting 1000 free throws tonight..that was pathetic

Garrett probably should not have been playing at the end of the game, along with Sir Dom. Should be easiest shot next to layup.

Disagree big time; Pointer makes our D go and is an improving offensive player. A real glue guy and very valuable.

I agree on Pointer. He plays the top of the zone so tough. Incredibly quick for his size,
a nightmare for opposing point guards. You really have to be at the games to appreciate it.

They have to practice shooting softly at the front of the rim. Worked for me.

his positioning in the zones is getting better

NJIT guards were pretty quick. .Moreso than South Carolina. Dom was essential in the game since Amir and Phil missed the bus. DLo and Karr carried us and took it low where we had the advantage. The free throw thing requires action if only to create confidence. I'd be appalled missing nine in a row with my eyes shut. Most of them have lousy technique and it's no wonder they're scared at the line. I've never seen a guy who spins the ball at the line shoot it well consistently. Just wasted motion and a sign of discomfort. As mentioned it will cost us games if unaddressed.

Amir missed the bus? Are you kidding? He had NINE rebounds! We don't win without him. He also had three assists to only one turnover, 2 blocks and 1 steal while playing very tough defense.

Not everyone has to score to be contribute. Wow.

Missed free throws, especially front ends, are the equivalent of turnovers. I think Felix would have gotten a lot of Amirs time if not for foul trouble. We have stunk from the line for years and I've never seen a single change of routine. This can be taught and I don't know why we don't.

Softly is the key word. Some of their misses are real rimrockers.

Free throw shooting is mostly mental Its perspiration and putting in the time Form plays a small % but follow thru, concentration using tips of the fingers and ark,Feet placement and proper knee bend should result in shooting 70% or better unless personality gives way to pressure.
gives way pressure

That may be true but if he was rebounding well he would be playing more because that is what we need and when on the college level and you are are 6'7 240lbs and built like a blacksmith I think there was a pretty good expectation that he would be a pretty good rebounder.

Definitely very talented...He'll get his opportunity again...if he takes advantage there will be minutes

Expectation by whom? And do you really think there is enough of a sample to say he is was benched because he didn't rebound and not because we have better players?

My point is if he was rebounding better he would be playing more just as anyone else on the team would right now because it is a weakness of the team. If Sam Sealy showed in practice that he could rebound better than the guys we have playing right now he would probably be seeing time. And excuse me if I think a 6'7 240 lb forward on the collegiate level might just might be able to pile up a rebound or two.
