NIT

The NIT should be eliminated in modern day college basketball. It does not hold the reverence it did 50 years ago. With all the good teams out there today, I believe it is time to expand the NCAA tournament to a field of 80 to 100 teams!

16 seeds never beat one seeds... Now you want even worse teams in the tournament to be slaughtered by higher seeds? It's supposed to be a national championship. At least most of the teams in the NIT have a punchers chance to win it all.

The NIT is like the dozens of meaningless football bowl games played in December...a chance to extend the season.

You dimwits claiming that the NIT is where we should reasonably be a so full of sh!t i swear, you much be working for lavin.

Spare me this moronic "starting from scratch" nonsense. Year 3 ! Experienced juniors! Among the most talented in the league ! That is more than most coaches have. It shouldnt take more than 3 years!
This year was a huge failure and that this NIT thread even exists is a shame.

Im so sick of you Lavin sheep who cant see through this guy and dont know failure when it is right in front of your eyes

True newsie - but as a fan I'm delighted to watch our team play (hopefully) a few more games.

Lots of story lines here to provide grist for a poster's mill. No matter how we perform I expect to see at least 17 posts analyzing Obekpa's body language, facial expressions and eye contact with Lavin. If he did get a new haircut - is it a statement that he intends to transfer?

If we go all the way we'll probably need a separate thread entitled "Sour Grapes."

Everyone knows this season is a failure, but some rational posters have moved on and focused on the future. That future is the NIT, a tournament where we could win some games and gain some confidence heading into next season. The way this season ended sucked, but it's in the past, time to look at the future of our program and focus on what's to come. No reason to keep complaining about what happened last week, time to move on and get on with our lives.

That's be awful. The NCAA was the most perfect thing ever. By adding these play in games it now has a few blemishes but it's still the best sporting event in the world. No team lower than an 11 seed has ever made a Final Four. Now you want to pollute the tournament by adding it more seeds higher than 16?

The NIT still has a place in college basketball

Why not make the NIT for mid majors and the NCAA for 64 majors. There is great celebration when the mid major wins their post season tournament and the automatic bid but then 95 per cent of the time they get a 13 to 16 seed and a beating in their first game.
Classify 8 to 10 leagues as major and make the rest eligible for a 32 team tournament in the NIT playing all games on campus. There is no reason for any games to play at MSG . In fact there is no reason for the current NIT to come to MSG.

Don't forget about these other big post season Tourneys:

CBI, College Basketball Invitational

And the something or other College Insider.com Tournament

How do these things even exist, but didn't we go to one of them in the recent past?

Why the insult? Just because we have a different opinion than you do about Lavin and what constitutes a rebuilding a program, is no reason to refer to us as "sheep." We're not blinded by what we see. We view it differently from you. There are several others who share your viewpoint of Lavin, but do so in a rational, non-insulting way. If you want to have some credibility for your point of view, you need to express it in a rational, logical way.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. :)

How about instead of having the mid major conference tournament winner go straight to the NCAA tourney, invite the top 3 teams in each of these "automatic [wasted] bid" conferences to the NIT, with the winner being awarded a seed no worse that 4, the other finalist no worse than 8, and the semifinalists an automatic bid. Teams can reject the invite (i.e. a very talented team in a mediocre conference that believe have already locked an "at large" bid and are in the NCAA tournament no matter what). Similarly, perceived "bubble" teams in major conferences that don't believe they have a chance to win their tournament can accept an invitation to the NIT to gain a spot that might not be there unless they won two or more games against highly ranked teams. You can trim the automatic bids of the American East, Big Sky, Big West, Mid American, MEAC, Southland, SWAC, Sun Belt, Ivy, and WAC (10 invites) down to the NIT 4 while giving bubble teams a second life before their conference tournaments to crash the dance.

The other conferences might have to move their conference tournament back (which may be a non starter but I'm in my second paragraph of fantasy land anyway) and a school that just won an automatic bid from the NIT would be playing with the same "house money" as the highly ranked teams, maybe even freeing up a spot for a bubble team in a year that a conference does deserve 7 or 8 bids should that school go on a tear and win both. This is either the best idea I've had in 5 years or the type of drivel I would expect from myself with only 12 hours of sleep in 6 days.

Agreed. The NCAA tourney works as it is and shouldn't expand. The NIT might be the "discount bin" at your local retailer, but there are still quality teams and decent basketball to be played. I'll enjoy it for what it is...

Jordan out ill tonight

QUEENS, N.Y. (March 18, 2014) – St. John’s head men’s basketball coach Steve Lavin announced Tuesday that 6-4 freshman guard Rysheed Jordan will miss the Red Storm’s NIT opener vs. Robert Morris with tonsillitis.

Yep, we lost both which tarnished the NIT championship. However at the time NIT was more prestigious.
CCNY was the only dual champ. It all ended with the point shaving scandal and the gamblers and scum
that permeated New York at the time were declared off limits and MSG was never allowed to be a site again
for an NCAA tournament game. Obviously that has all changed now as it is all about the money and
garnering sites that will pack and sell out and fill the coffers of the member schools.
