Looks like all three had a higher NET ranking, so maybe not such a surprised.

St. Bonnies is a bit surprising with an 85 NET (St. John's -69).

Bonnies did have 3 Quad-1 wins (Johnnies had 1).

If someone told me on October 31, 2021 that our beloved St John’s RedStorm would not make either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT I would not believed them.

I would have said either catastrophic injuries, catastrophic scandal or covid.  I suppose Miss. Valley State going 2-26 did not help the metrics, but hey what do I know.  We did beat them by 77 or whatever though!

Man, even Norm led us to the NIT once./media/kunena/emoticons/w00t.png

Honestly our NET of 69 was overshadowed by our single Quad 1 win. Our crunch time collapses really proved to be lethal. A shame because this team deserved some kind of post season acknowledgment.

Not surprised nor disappointed (I saved that for the way the season played out and not being at least a bubble NCAA team). I didn’t even bother to check to see if we got in until this morning.  Just means the offseason of discontent starts early.

I am disappointed (in the season and not making either tourney).  I thought that the NIT could be good experience for our guys, assuming that we keep most (which is all you can assume right now).  No downside.  But I am with you and fear that the offseason may be another debacle.

Vaccaro in today's NYPost, only one team from The Empire State is in the Big Dance: Colgate.

As *weathermannyc put it succinctly to our group text:

*" SJU only had three top 100 wins. Only 1 win in conference against a team with a winning record, our resume sucked."

I don't think they deserved anything, I know they did not earn postseason. Just sad.

NIT is not the local flavored event it once was and is merit based and formula driven. SJU just did not do enough to deserve a bid. Lessons learned are schedule better, close out games and dispense with our tradition of digging big holes in the win/loss column

True.  Disappointed that our team does not get to play some more games, I enjoyed watching them this season.  On to next year for our program, in the meantime there is more basketball to watch.

This year considering had 2 of top 10 or 15 players in the conference was a disaster
Don’t want to hear that never had losing season BS stat again
Outside of Norm years and last 2 Mahoney years this was one of worst jobs ever by St John’s coach

It does seem strange that SJU puts in a bid to host NIT (I am sure they were pretty confident they were getting in) and then the Mike Anderson/Tulsa rumors come out and they don't make the NIT.

Makes you think.

I don't think the Tulsa rumors played a role. Aside from SJU's resume just not being good enough for the NIT, I think it's quite likely that this Tulsa thing has been in play for a couple weeks now if it truly does have legs. It's been pretty clear for a few months that Haith was likely going to be let go there and Anderson had to know that. Wouldn't be surprised if some backchanneling was done on both Anderson's and Tulsa's ends weeks ago to gauge this other's interest. I don't think this just popped up out of nowhere this weekend, that's just when it became publicly speculated about.

Anyone think that perhaps St. John's not accepting a bid last year had anything to do with it? Clearly Cragg and company were expecting an invite and offered the St John's arena.

Towson, Nicholls, princeton, make it over st john's?
They are 3 of 9 automatic bids. So, at least 23 teams selected based on whatever criteria is used.
11 Automatic bids, not 12 as I previously stated.

Atlantic Sun: Jacksonville State - Because Bellarmine was ineligible to play in dance jacksonville state got NCAA bid
Big West: Long Beach State
CAA: Towson
Conference USA: North Texas - Only automatic bid to be seeded so they were in regardless
Ivy: Princeton
Missouri Valley: Northern Iowa
Sun Belt: Texas State
Horizon League: Cleveland State
MAAC: Iona
MAC: Toledo
Southland: Nicholls
SWAC: Alcorn State

the NIT does itself a disservice by giving automatic bids to the conference champions of these awful conferences.  Some might deserve it, but not all these conferences.  It left out some deserving teams who would/could put on a good game.

As Paultz pointed out, this isn't the old NIT where SJU had an ownership interest and the tournament had an inherent interest in putting marketable teams in the tournament. The NCAA owns it now and its interests are a little different.  Seems they are using it to some extent as a "make-up" for small conference teams that didn't get into the NCAAs and perhaps also as a laboratory to test the real-world application of their metrics.

The same could be said about the NCAA Tournament. The NIT is all about which teams actually care and what to be there. Lots of times those teams from small conferences want to be there way more than the big conference teams that had NCAA Tournament at large aspirations. See, Robert Morris vs St. John's.

Funny thing, when the season started I would have been insulted with an N.I.T. offer, but I was disappointed that we weren’t selected.  I really like many of the players on this year’s team, especially Posh & Champagnie, and I would have liked them to have the opportunity to play on.
