Niagara

'Cuse goes down to Michigan, 68-65. Two huge Orange TO's in final seconds. A pox on both their houses (ACC & Big 10), but you gotta love it! (But with our lack of size, I'll be surprised if we can even keep it close on Saturday.)

And Wake and Pitt lose to Minnesota and Indiana, respectively, in ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

Cuse is not all that big this year.

Until Dajuan Coleman comes back. But even with just McCullough, Christmas and Okonoboh over 6'9" that's still more size than STJ and Roberson and GBinje have good size at SF too.

I should have said relative to cuse teams of the past.

Some very negative fans here. This game was never in doubt even when we were only up 46-45. They could not stay in front of our guards at all...it was a joke. We missed the front end of three 1 and 1s and two dunks. They banked a three and another jumper. They also hit some fugly threes they shouldn't have attempted and were settling for jumpers.

These are the types of games you use to get better. Stewart, Balamou, Jones, and Alibegovic all got some good burn. Coach used this game to get Branch more aggressive. Remember, Xavier just lost to two cupcakes. 5-1 with an RPI friendly OOC schedule ahead. Bring on Syracuse. Let's be positive here.

Really? Jones got 3 minutes, Alibegovic 4, and Balamou 6; that's good burn and a conscious coaching development strategy? The reality is this was a typical game from this group of players and coaches - some good stuff, some bad stuff, some intensity and some indifference. They are consistently inconsistent and outside of Branch getting some sustained minutes with the ball this was a game I have seen way too many times over the last four years. They won and that is a good thing but basically it was the same old, same old. And from my perspective I could care less what Xavier did; you present that like it should make me feel better about another very uneven SJU performance when what I am looking for is some real improvement on the court. And as for it being a trap game; good teams who have accomplished something can afford to fall flat because of a trap game; teams that are basically going through their last chance to accomplish something should be hungry, hungry, hungry.

I agree. With three minutes plus on the clock I was waiting for Jones and Alibegovic to reenter the game. And we really expect Jones and Balamou to return next year? Can't be happy campers.

Look at Syracuse's games this year. They use these games to bury opponents. Nothing wrong having a killer instinct once in a while. I think Jimmy B knows what he is doing and it pains me to say that.

Syracuse also plays in front of 20,000 fans every single game. CA looked DEAD tonight. This was a tough game to get up for. Every single one of our recruits mentioned MSG as a reason they came to St. John's--not a half-empty CA playing against an awful MAAC team on a Tuesday night. This was a classic trap game...right after playing #10 (and #1 RPI) Gonzaga and right before playing Syracuse on the road.

What?!!! Top-tier recruits -- or even second-tier ones, for that matter -- aren't thrilled by the prospect of playing in front of dynamic crowds in our beautiful, venerable, cutting-edge on-campus arena? I'm stunned. Stunned!
CA is a glorified high school gym! Renovation is a disappointment!

How much did it cost?

You are insufferable. Why don't you find a team you can actually cheer for instead of just complaining about St. John's? Guess what? It's not going to get much better than this, man. Syracuse is gone, Louisville is gone, Pitt is gone, ND is gone...it's not the the same league. It's been decades since a non-football school won the national championship. Stop trying to ruin it for those of us that are trying to support the program and school that they love. You think it's easy to cheer for this team? Do you really think I love Steve Lavin?

You hate Lavin and because of it you see everything he does negatively. This was one of the few games on the schedule that we couldn't lose if we tried. He got Stewart some burn as a guy we might very well need for depth and shooting ability (look at our next game). He got the other trio some minutes and would have given them more if our lead didn't dwindle to one. Did Alibegovic get 35 minutes? No, but three to four minutes is something to build on. He has tape to evaluate, problems he can fix, and he got to work out some freshman nerves.

Every single one of these kids mentioned playing in MSG as a reason for coming to St. John's. Do you know how hard it is to get up for sh*t opponent like Niagara on a Tuesday when your own fans don't even show up and you play before a half-empty high school sized gym? To make it worse, it was the game after playing #10 Gonzaga and the game before what Harrson has called the most important game of their careers. Ease up, man. Try...just TRY to find something positive. It you want it to come easier, root for UK.

I am very close to just forgetting these boards altogether. I've never seen a nastier group of people that just can't be positive about anything.

Marillac, come back off the ledge. We need every fan we have ... especially passionate ones like you. The truth is it's not easy being a St. John's fan in recent years, and with the emergence of the (super-arrogant) so-called Big 5 conferences, it's only going to get harder. In the words of Neil Young, "Don't let 'em bring you down."

I'm telling you: Take a deep breath, pull it together, and stay on-board. Maybe you do get a little over-passionate at times -- hey, don't we all? and why would any of us be here if we weren't passionate about Redmen basketball? -- but I've never found anything you say to be shockingly bad or snide ... unlike some others (who shall remain nameless). If need be, take a respite for a few days, and then come back -- albeit without those first-person posts. ;)

(Besides, your handle means something special to me: Every time I see it, I can't help but think of Marillac cafeteria and of those awful -- but thankfully cheap -- hot dogs that I lived on for four-and-a-half years in the sixties.)

anyone who isn't fascinated by the evolution of Marillac over the years from one of the most depressed st johns fans with Norm to one of the most optimistic posters on the board needs their head examined.

Personally mjmaherjr loves reading his posts even if some times I think he might have just smoked some pot or something but I enjoy every one of them ( especially talking in the third person ). Plus he can be pretty damn funny.

Marillac - please keep posting. You are one of the best contributors on here and while I am often a pessimist, we need some optimists around.
