Next Head Coach
Wish list?
Nate Oates of Buffalo, but I think he's going to be in line for bigger jobs. In reality, anybody who takes this job is going to come with question marks. No perfect candidate out there, IMO.

Ideally, Mullin turns it around the rest of this year, and is back.

Thread came a few hours later than I expected lol.

Nate Oates would obviously be the best choice, though he seems unlikely.

For now hoping we can still turn things around... but not very optimistic.

I had hope of St. Jean taking over after a few years as a young coach and having a long successful career here. Doubt that happens.

Mike Rice might be better choice for HC than AC.

It couldn't hurt to ask him.

Mullin being back is not ideal IMO. Even if the team (not Mullin) turns it around, next year figures to be even worse. The OOC will be more difficult, other BE teams have out recruited us and our best players are probably gone from this team. Mullin has not shown me that he has grown one iota as a coach. I was against hiring an inexperienced coach from day one. Even if it was our best player ever and a HOF NBA player. Once the hire was made I assumed he was hired because it was believed he would be a great recruiter because of his accomplishments. How has that worked out? I also assumed that he would hire an assistant who had experience coaching. I don't know if Slice was supposed to be that guy but I think he was hired because he was a great HS recruiter. It would have been unrealistic to expect him to both be the main recruiter and also run the team. Matt was brought onboard to recruit transfers and most agree he has done a great job in that area. St Jean is running the team from what I can see and runs the practices from what I have read. He may eventually prove to be a good coach but he is not there yet.I have no idea why Mitch was hired other than that he is Mullin's friend.

Yes, we will again be starting over if we hire a new coach, but it is time. I do not want to see another year of running the team into the ground. I hope and believe Mike Craig has the ability to hire a quality head coach and ensure that he hires a balanced staff.I also hope that a new coach will be given the resources he needs to succeed.

Just my opinions. I've been holding them in too long and needed to vent.
Mullin will get 1 more year to confirm he should not be a coach
Doubt it. Based on Cragg's press conference, I think he is fully aware that Mullin shouldn't have been hired in the first place. I doubt he has any alliance to him whatsoever and is looking to make his own mark as the new AD. Plus, let's also be real for a second. St. John's is going to be worse next year. Ponds is the best player the school has had in years and Clark is a very solid player (not today obviously).

Sorry, but I don't see David Caraher, Eli Wright, Ian Steere, and Cameron Mack as suddenly putting SJU back on the map.

I’m just happy that Cragg has been apart of some great basketball hires the last 10 years or so!

Not advocating for a coaching change one way or the other but just curious about Nate Oates. I know he has coached Buffalo the past 2 seasons after taking over for Bobby Hurley and is having a great season but he has like 5 seniors doing the heavy lifting so who knows if he can recruit or attract (with good recruiting assistants) good recruits. I'm sure he will look to bolt this year if he harbors higher aspirations than coaching at Buffalo because it is highly doubtful he will have the level of success next year that he has had this year. Obviously not a sure thing in my opinion. Think best option at this point would be to convince CM he needs to revamp his staff. We do have some fairly nice players in the pipeline. Hopefully this is our new AD's opinion and he can accomplish this task.

Getting way ahead of myself, but conjecture gut says if no NCAA Tourney, Cragg will push Chis to alter staff & it if it happens, will be interesting to see how he responds. Just my sense after a glass of wine at my favorite Cuban restaurant. :)

Here’s to surprising us all & beating Creighton and getting back in the heat of things.

It is very hard to ask the fan base to continue to have patience, when we've gone 19 years without an NCAA tournament win. Especially, when most of our fan base is made up of the over-60 crowd.

Even if what you are proposing is the right thing, I don't see the majority of this fan base going for it.

If a new coach comes in, he has to be able to win right away, like in year 1. That's why, the more I think about it, if a change is made, an older guy like Cluess or Mihalic might not be the worst thing in the world.

Hell no to Cluess!

Guys, we're starting over next season no matter what.

Ponds will be gone. Clark will be gone. Heron will likely be gone. Simon may be gone. Someone else probably will leave unexpectedly.

It's going to be a new team. If we finish the year without making the Tournament, would you rather start over with a new coach or start over with a coach who has lost all momentum?

There's a lot of other viable candidates. There could some that I'm not exactly aware of who are more viable options.

I am not saying if things don't turn we don't need a new coach. What I am saying is tired of doing it every 5 years. ST John's does not exactly get to pick from the cream of the crop.

Or we could hope the team goes on a run and makes the tourney, For all of Mullin's shortcomings, both real and imagined on here not sure I have stomach for another rebuild.
