Next Coach?

Tubby Smith will be 64 yrs. old when the season starts. Too old to rebuild here.

Great, there goes my Bobby Knight idea (that I also had during the last two coaching changes). :woohoo: :S

How about Mike Dunlap? Just took over Loyola Marymount, but I'm sure the money and the Big East might be a lure. No doubt he will get the best out of his players

Dunlap is a great coach but can't recruit.

"Reports have come out that DePaul, which has an opening, has targeted University of Buffalo Coach Bob Hurley as one of its prime choices.

Hurley, who guided Buffalo to the NCAA tournament this season, would be foolish not to listen.

But what about a job closer to home that is not yet open? There are also rumblings that St. John’s, which is still making a decision on the future of basketball coach Steve Lavin, also is focusing on Hurley if Lavin returns to his former duties as a college basketball analyst–a move that may be encouraged by a St. John’s administration which is hesitant to make a move which could result in a huge buyout figure.

Hurley’s brother Danny, who has done a nice job reviving the Rhode Island program in the past few years, also is a possible target of St. John’s if Lavin leaves."

@blauds: Bobby Hurley on short list at DePaul, but what happens if St. John's opens?http://t.co/qHo14Sd82F

What I meant about hoping somebody might be willing to wait for our glacial administration to act....

See now this pisses me off, why are the head people at SJU such freaking idiots? Yeah, sit on your fat asses while just BS'ing around, while other schools go about their business trying to get a good coach.
This makes me sick.

I'm sure most would disagree with me, but I'd take Cluess over B Hurley any day of the week and twice on Sunday's.

Interesting mention of possible change in Texas for Marshall. If that happens I wonder if Barnes would be in play for us.

Barnes? No. Please no. Nooooo. That's another Lavin. Did you see the talent he had on that Texas squad this year? And he got a 11 seed and lost first round. He can recruit but can not coach.

Barnes...PASS!

I'm sure most would disagree with me, but I'd take Cluess over B Hurley any day of the week and twice on Sunday's.

Because?

Longer record of sustained success. Has won everywhere he's been. Team plays exciting basketball.

Cluess is a solid candidate, but I'm not sure his formula will work at a higher level. His best Iona teams have been built on getting local transfers to play closer to home. That has really been helped by Lavin not really seeming interested in the transfer game. Momo, probably the best Iona transfer under Cluess, couldn't come to SJU because of Hicks.

While it's true he has always enjoyed success, his brief tenure at Suffolk and CW Post need to be viewed in the proper context. He had an unfair recruiting advantage over everyone on the Island due to his reputation and connection with the basketball factory that was St. Mary's. D3 JUCO has only about three dozen teams in the country and only a few schools would be able to handle St. Mary's high school in a game. His best player at CW Post was arguably a guy he coached at St. Mary's, Montalvo.

Also, he has won three MAAC titles and failed to win the conference tournament, making the dance only once (with Momo averaging 22.6 ppg). Hurley, in a tougher conference, has already matched Cluess with tournament appearances and would likely qualify for an at-large next season even if he failed to win the MAC.

Cluess inherited a 21-win Iona team that performed well enough to get Willard a job at SH. Hurley inherited a 14-win Buffalo team that performed poorly enough to get the head coach fired.

Guess whose picture appears on the sports page of the Arizona Republic. That's right - Steve Lavin is one of the five potential coaching candidates for the Arizona State job, along with Jeff Capel, Jamie Dixon, Josh Pastner and Russell Turner (UC - Irvine). As of today Pastner appears to be the favorite since he is a tireless recruiter, while Capel is probably a better coach. If ASU chooses Pastner it's because he is the anththesis of Sendek. And that's exactly what ASU needs, a sales man who knows how to work the AAU route.

You may have a point if he hasn't won EVERYWHERE.

St. Mary's HS - took a crappy program and had them ranked nationally in the top 5.
Suffolk County CC - coached 2 years I believe and had them in the national championships.
Post - reversed a mediocre program and won something lie 75% of his games there.
Iona - forget what he inherited. Look what he sustained.

Win. Win. Win. He's a winner. period.

So let me get this straight. You want St. John's to pick a winner?
