New President Elected: Conrado M. Gempesaw

His resume' looks amazing obviously. No one ever mentioned his name during the process. I guess they were keeping the interviews highly guarded.

Speaking of guards, does he like sports, in particular basketball? Come on, all of you have already thought about that.

He was a cyo ref .. and was involved at the diocese level too. He must be something of a basketball fan.

well let's hope that basketball is at least one major item on his agenda.

Yep....he just took over a major university, and he should be concerned about their basketball team??
Lavin makes about what 500 kids pay in tuition.

Thing that stood out to me in the article is he won't begin until July 1st. That's not good news for our program when both Lavin and Monasch's jobs are in limbo seemingly and we need a resolution soon.

Underwhelming hire.

Why? Did you find something wrong with his lateral footwork? Or did he not go after it enough under the basket? I hate it when University Presidents play defense like sissies.

His resume is not impressive and they bypassed several more experienced candidates with ties to the university.

Maybe going outside the University is the right thng to do. Maybe a different perspective and fresh approach is needed. Maybe a fire will be lit under many of the complacent butts.

I don't know. I haven't followed the hiring process, except for the few names mentioned throughout. You could be right. I am not sure how much better the other candidates were.

Maybe in 1975

What has this guy proven?

He was a 4 star recruit on Rivals, though only a 3 star on Scout. He has good quickness to the basket, but only an average jumper. Plays tough defense and has a nose for the ball. The quintessential "glue guy" for a D1 team.

Tomorrow's homework assignment: Compare and contrast the resume and qualifications of the candidate selected to the other candidates under consideration, as well as those employed in similar positions at comparable universities. Extra credit for describing your own qualifications for having an informed opinion on the subject (such as being an administrator at an accredited institution of higher learning (this would be beyond being a junior high school gym coach or perhaps a high school teacher), having participated in search committees for college administrators, etc.).

I am sure we all wish the new president the best and hope that in the near (or middle or long) term his tenure will be a positive for the university in general and the basketball program in particular.

Interesting. I'm very happy SJU finally broke the Niagra gravy train that was coming through the presidents office, and went with an outsider, and a lay person. Someone had posted about the dean of the law school possibly getting the position, but maybe what we needed was a fresh face and a new perspective. I'd be interested to know what his salary will be. At any rate, congratulations sir, good luck and God bless!

No qualified St. John's guys available?
It seems that most Catholic school who have gone this route hired graduates of the school.

Lets hope that President Gempesaw's hire terminates the "old boy" network at StJohn's which over the last decade or so, set mediocrity as its goal and only sometimes attained mediocrity.

Welcome to SJU Bobby! First lay person is a devout Catholic with an excellent academic track record as a professor and administrator. A basketball fan who will likely attend games instead of getting suits measured in Taiwan. Expect an increase in Filipino student enrollment. ;)

What about Dr. Fitzpatrick, the long time president at STAC who was a VP at SJU and did some tremendous things at STAC? Her resume destroys this guy's. His background is in agriculture? He's never run a school? No ties to SJU or this area? What about fundraising experience.

Relax! His background is not in agriculture but in economics! He was provost at a large university and supposedly is a great people person who has been well liked at both Miami and Delaware. One of the few Asian Americans to hold a position as university president. A good fit for a multicultural international university that is finally breaking free of the Vincentian Lewis Avenue mentality.

I think he needs to have an online Q&A with Redmen.com immediately...........

:)

What I find surprising is that he is not a man of the cloth. This is kind of groundbreaking for them and should be interesting to watch his moves like it will interesting to watch what the Knicks do in the coming months/years.

Will Gempesaw be the Phil Jackson of St. John's?

Will Phil Jackson be the Phil Jackson of the Knicks?

Time will tell.

So much of a basketball fan that I hear he referred to the institution as the University of St. John's.

Conrado M. Gempesaw has been the Provost of Miami University in Ohio which as you will see from the below video is a top tier academic institution.
