ND Wants To Keep STJ On Schedule - Should We Agree

Hello TIS, bet you an ice cream sundae that we play The Orange at least once a year. And I would expect the same from ND.

Also understand that Chris and Kevin White have a very good relationship. If Duke can find a way to fit us in they will, IMO.

If not, we will see them in Maui in 2015.

I would question any relationships Chris has at this point in the Big East journey. I have no problem playing Duke, a quasi-football playing school in the ACC but Syracuse is dead to me ------ DEAD!

Could not agree more. There is no benefit and only a potential downside to putting them on our schedule.
May they rot in the ACC.

Syracuse may be "dead" to us and of no benefit, but they will still be on our schedule IMO.

I agree JSJ, they'll be on the schedule.
And personally I have no problem with it. There's plenty of benefit in playing them; geographic proximity, historical rivalry, fight over the same recruiting channels etc etc.
We need a marquee non-conference match-up... Syracuse is the natural fit.
I've said this before but the best thing SJU could do would be to make Syracuse a permanent team in the Holiday Festival, and make it a tournament style format again.
Day 1: SJU v. MAAC or North East team, Syracuse v. A-10 or Colonial team.
Day 2: Championship and consolation game.

That would instantly make the Holiday Fest relevant again. They could rotate the 2 other teams( Fordham, Iona, Hofstra, Manhattan, Siena, Marist, Fairfield etc) and MSG would sell out. Probably 9 years out of 10 the championship would be St Johns and Cuse.

Like your idea but doubt the cuse would agree to playing in HF every year given the other exempt holiday tourneys they could play in.

Please explain how St.John's benefits from playing Syracuse University (a/k/a "New York's Team") in Madison Square Garden.

We don't, period. Let's just see how great cuse is when Boeheim retires and Hopkins takes over as hc. I'll give 'em three years before they start to recede into mid-pack acc status.

cuse needs as many msg games as they can get, they'll still be scheduled for at least one ooc game, plus the occasional preseason nit. We don't need to be giving them, and their obnoxious fans, any more access to the big city. Let 'em try to reschedule a couple of games from the dome down here, like boeheim's gonna let that happen.

Screw cuse and the rest of the traitors.

the big east decline started when syracuse insisted that pitt be admitted into the BE--for football
at that time the BE should said good by and good luck

Pitt was admitted to the Big East in 1982 and thus was already a conference member when football play began in 1991.

Scheduling Notre Dame in a world where 19 or 20 conference games could be the Big East norm would be foolish when so many schools (like Michigan, Syracuse, even Texas) enjoy a trip to the hallowed halls of MSG for a winter night in front of the fans in Gotham.

And going to South Bend in the fall/ winter/ spring has even less value than hosting them in Manhattan. Have you looked at where South Bend is on the map? Over an hour drive from Chicago, close to nothing, the excitement of a doornail in sodden dirt on a cloudy day. For DePaul, the Irish might be an interesting draw, considering the throngs of Irish alumni in the Chicagoland area.

But for St. John's, no favors for Notre Dame are needed. They can enjoy their Syracuse "rivalry", create new memories with the empty seats in Miami, and enjoy the Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle area for the conference tournament.

Agree but plenty on this board do not seem to share our sentiments.

I just don't get it! A school that was your partner for 30 years stabs you in the back then turns around and stabs you in the heart, had their alums happy in NYC playing Rutgers, St. John,s, the Hall and we need to give them a pass?

Syracuse did not schedule BC any longer when they departed for the same reason we should not schedule them.
I would rather have Cal and Kentucky come to MSG to play us or Kansas or UNLV or UCLA or Gonzaga or Indiana or Duke, etc.

I am hoping Gloria Alred finds another Bernie Slime victim, that their football falls one step below Duke and that Jim Boeheim' s wife does a spread in Hot MILFS over 50.

I say no way. ND wants to have its cake and eat it too. You can't leave the Big East screwing everyone over, then still keep the benefits that the Big East gave you. It's like a guy who just broke up with his girlfriend, finds a new one and asks his ex if she will be his 2nd girlfriend.

I can think of a lot other teams I'd rather play than Notre Dame. Screw them

ND Already has 2 games this year at the Barclay's center in the CVC classic. They and other ACC teams will have no problem schedule non-conf opp at MSG or the Barclay's. They are both going to be open for business to whoever can pay the rent. I could see the ACC vs Big Ten Challenge moving to MSG with teams like ND and Cuse playing in the ACC now.

I don't think that we should schedule ND CUSE or PITT after this. But we have little control who they schedule at MSG. Fact of the matter is SJU relies on opponents fan bases to fill the stands, and that an ND game at MSG vs a non major opponent would draw just as well as an SJU game(provided its included in the season tix package). Say ND vs Vermont would draw just as well as SJU vs Vermont.

We have scheduled UCLA in the past and while its an intriguing game nationally it does not Fill the stands. We had about 9k last time we played them. While ND only brought us about 2k more, we still need the crowds of CUSE, UCONN, DUKE to break the 14k barrier. The truth hurts.

The truth never hurts if you actually fill your truths with FACTS!

You neglect to inform folks here that the low SJ crowds were due to the poor product we were putting on the court. The fact that SJ has had mediocre basketball for close to 20 years with our 5th coach in that period with scandals, coaches fired mid-season, piss-poor recruiting, and one of the worst PR efforts in the Big East.
You neglect to project that with a nationally recognized coach (not named Brian Mahoney or Norm Roberts), two consecutively nationally rated recruiting classes and with a more national schedule, our brand can only get more exposure if we win 20+ games a year and the MSG crowds will be less dependent on handouts from Syracuse or ND fans.

Bottom line, if you remember, when SJ is nationally ranked, the Garden is mostly red and not orange for our home games, like in the 80's. That time is coming soon I firmly believe.

In the 80s we truly were NYCs team ,got great crowds and press. I believe we will get back there again w Lavin at the healm.

The fact that the ACC raised its penalty fee to leave the conference to 50 million will essentially mean none of those schools are going to be leaving. We should have made it 50 million when BC and Miami left. btw it isnt so much that BC left or that Miami left that began the beginning of the end. The answer is really with ND if they had been willing to play football with our teams even as much as they now want to with the ACC then Miami and BC would never have left

Great point about ND not playing 5 BE teams each year in football, the bigeast was totally mishandeled. The real importance of ND playing their FB teams should have been mandatory! . How they let them get away with that is
assinine
