NCAA Tournament seeding

Serious question because I've never actually had to consider these things lol. But how much of a difference is there between a 2 seed and 3 seed? Asking since those are the seeds lined up to meet in the Sweet 16. I guess the 3 has a slightly harder road to Sweet 16?

Odds are 20% lower of an upset from the #3 seed to #5 seed. And, 11 over 6 seed is one of the most common upsets to happen, so that can also be in play (usually that 11 seed is a play-in high major team, but still).

But playing the six seed instead of the five seed could be the difference of playing a St. Mary's or Gonzaga instead of a Maryland or Arizona.

If my recollection serves we have had bad luck with number 2 seed. Year after Elite 8 we were 2 seed and lost to a pre perennial good Gonzaga team in 2nd round. Can’t remember another time we were a 2?

How about this thread. I'm elated this is our conversation. Thank you, again, Fr. Shanley, Rick Pitino and Mike Repole.

If you had told me about this thread during the Mullin & Anderson years (and before), I would have asked to see your day pass from the Bellevue Psych Ward.

was about to comment the same... 6* games left and this thread it totally warranted.... what a diff a year makes lol

We are a 2 seed now. Have a chance to be a 1 if we win out.

A 30 win rick pitino led team that won the big east regular season and big east tourney is a 1 seed.

Obviously, teams that hold the 1 seeds now would have to lose a game or 2 which I think they will.

Uh oh. If this is anything like your UConn prediction, SJU is on the tournament bubble now.

We are not going to be a 1 seed, even if we win out. The 1 seeds are going to be some combo of Auburn/Duke/Houston/Florida/Tennessee/Alabama. We’d have to leapfrog three of those teams and that’s not happening even if we win out. Go look at the metrics.

I feel like a #2 is likely assuming we win out as all have mentioned. There will be 2 1's and 2 2's from SEC. Duke will be a 1. Houston the likely other 1. For the 2 remaining spots it comes down to STJ and Michigan or Wisconsin. That's if things go as you would think they would.

Trouble spots are if A&M, IA St, or Clemson go and win their tourney.

Let's say we're a 3 seed on Selection Sunday (my best guess). Does anyone know the general odds that we'd be sent to Providence? Odds we'd end up somewhere totally random, like Washington? I realize we won't know for sure until Selection Sunday, but just trying to figure out potential travel plans. Never once cared for this stuff, since the best seed I've seen St. John's obtain (as a fan) was #9. :)

I don’t remember what we did for Lavin Charlotte but I’m guessing the order we need to buy as soon as we are announced and where playing is Tix then Hotel then airfare ASAP ?

There are still a number of big games including our game at Marquette before the end of the regular season.

So you have to look at the other 3 seeds and see if geographically it’s preferential for them. On BracketMatrix, the 4 teams holding those spots in order are: Iowa State, Kentucky, Purdue, and Michigan St.

These clearly haven’t updated but let’s for argument sake say we are bumping out Michigan St. Iowa State takes Midwest, Kentucky takes South, so now Purdue has to choose between East and West. Gonna guess they would take East and we would go out West. Or we could be the top 4 seed and take East but then we would have to face a 1 in the Sweet Sixteen which is most likely Duke.

The issue is nowadays all the first and second round sites public sale tickets are already sold. Providence would be a disaster for tickets as it's such a small arena and the arena gets divided up by the participating teams. And with Pitino's large posse as well as boosters/NIL contributors, team player/staff comps, any public sale to SJU season ticket holders would be small I guess. Hope we get sent to a large arena like Rupp that seats 25,000!

wouldnt u do airfare first (if we do need to fly)... can always stubhub tickets..

I'm thinking once teams know where they are playing the fans start buying tix as that's an easy step

I'm thinking hotel 2nd because you have to lock up a place to stay

Then airfare because you are only competing with fans for your team and not everyone will take the same flights

But at least for me I plan on having all 3 accomplished within 15 minutes

Maybe I'm wrong on the sequence needed this is just my guessing

Sounds like tickets will be the hardest thing to come by and no reason to worry about the other two until you know you can get tickets.
