NBC Sports with huge offer to Big East

So if Big East bball members get a raise of roughly $3mm (new $4mm - current $1mm), does that mean my season ticket prices will go down? :woohoo:

You really think season tickets are too much????

I'm teasing.... Though when i think about it, face value of tickets of msg games are like $50 or $70, right? I can't remember from this past season. Not the cheapest, but comparable to other forms of entertainment in nyc... though it does add up when you buy multiple seats so you can bring family/buddies.

The face of the ticket says that amount. But if you have season tickets and divide the total number into the games played, it does not come close to that amount.

500-600 to me is not bad especially in NY. Other schools are more and often require donations just to buy tickets.

The recent questionnaire leads me to believe that we are headed in that direction.

Very preliminary.

And judging by our fan base that I think I have a pretty good grasp on- there wont be enough interest to even execute

I honestly think this move is the play the Big East Must play - Going with The Nation's Conference with many of the big metro areas as college bases it is time to move. ESPN screwed us, in destroying the conference - this is how we fight back - Football wise Three National televised games each week- Thursday - Saturday and Saturday  with Notre Dame on the NBC as well.Big Monday - Now becomes Thunderous Thusday or whatever term you want - with Back to Back double headers - With the other four conferences fighting over time on the WWL (ESPN/ESPN 2/ESPNU) NBC has - NBC/NBCS/MSNBC/CNBC/ to put our games on.
Time is now -

The only problem with this play is that ESPN hates NBC. They will pretty much do whatever they can to ignore properties on NBC channel because NBC wants to rival ESPN (as crazy as that sounds)

*Also while NBC has those other channels they aren't going to use them unless its the Olympics or NHL Playoffs. If the channel takes off and they win the rights to other sports properties (MLB is up this year) then they could spin off an NBCSports2 Channel for overflow. But obviously not there yet.

Many believe that the suits at ESPN saw this play from NBC coming and that is why some believe that
ESPN was the inspiration for the ACC to glom more Big East schools. Especially willing schools that
could not foresee such a large TV deal.  It appears that the birdie in ACC commissioner Swofford's ear was
indeed ESPN with the allure of reopening negotiations for a sweeter deal once the conference expanded.

Read that ESPN has exclusive negotiating rights with BE starting Sept. 1 but don't know for how long so how can NBC have an offer on the table?

behind the scenes, my man , behind the scenes, just like all deals are done.
Agreed and figured that. Also possible BE is putting that out there hoping ESPN ups their offer. Agree with Moose that while it would be nice to basically have our own network, vindictive ESPN would probably virtually ignore us and that will hurt as most people have ESPN on (ie sportscenter).

Here's a few other things to think about. What does NBC sports have now other than the Olympics? NHL Hockey, Notre Dame football and MLS soccer. Two leagues that have a younger niche (especially MLS). The Big East would fit in well. Like what was said before about NBC having multiple auxiliary channels if NBCSports gets too full...don't forget a HUGE reason for that is that NBC is owned by Comcast. This is Comcast's direct assault on the Mouse for TV sports properties. Comcast is by far the largest cable provider in this country by almost double their nearest competitor. I don't think it'd be a bad company to align our conference with IMO.

I say you HAVE to do this. Maybe try and pry a little more out of NBC but this would be BIG. If you follow MLS soccer you know that when NBC wants to come play...they come play BIG. Their production this season far eclipses what ESPN and Fox Soccer does/used to do. You could do all sorts of local and regional coverage for the teams and the different sports. Imagine watching the BigEast championships in multiple sports (men's soccer, baseball, women's basketball etc) on NBCSports or an auxiliary network. It's so much more exposure then ESPN could give the conference! I'd be surprised with ESPN's already full programing slate they can and will offer as much as NBC will.

Comcast is by far the largest cable provider in this country (by almost double their nearest competitor) and also own 49% of Verizon's FiOS television services.
49% of verizon fios tv ? really ? since when ? jeez I'm getting braindead

I hope we don't have another internal battle between the BE Basketball and Football schools over the huge difference in payments. Remember the quotes that occured during the last deal that they turned down. The BB schools may want a bigger cut of the pie.
However, a nice huge deal will mean the league has risen from the dead and will be very viable!

I have a friend who sells TV ads for comcast and this is what she says…FWIW. Learned my fact checking lesson :eek:hmy:

It seems that the  $4 million for the BB only schools is a throw in from NBC to get the football contract. So do the BB only schools all say "Thank You" to the football schools? Seems ironic.

At any rate, kudos to whoever negotiated this.

am I the only one who is in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp?

football landscape changes drastically, and by Nov. 1st, who knows what can drop.

I hope the Big East can pull this off, could practically save the league.

But if another round of poaching commences and teams like Louisville and Uconn were to leave the fold, I can't see any station droppin' those kinds of dollars on this conference.

Great news. Maybe stability could get us all 3 military academy's for football. That would make for a proud conference, and not very patriotic of ESPN to ignore. All new members would have the ability to grow their programs.

Nope, I agree. I like Aresco, but I'll believe the huge tv deal when I see it. And, at any rate, $10 mil sounds like a lot till you realize the ACC gives their schools $17. So the notion that this will save the league, and prevent Lousiville, Uconn, or Cinncinnatti etc from leaving, is being overstated in my opinion.

Schools that play FB and BB in the Big East would get $14 million and maybe more. No schools leave for $2-3 million and lose all their traditional rivalries in their home markets. Add to that the fact that Louisville and Uconn are basketball schools that happen to play football and without a Jim Calhoun and Rick Pitino their future success may be questioned by the media honchos that make programming decisions. My money is they stay.

The ACC is the borderline old Big East and in football has a Bowl affiliation ....... But that Bowl is the Chick Fil A Bowl!! Not exactly a bowl that all of America will want to identify with....LOL!

I understand your point '72, and I agree that losing big time coaches does diminish the value of those programs.
But the BIG 12 is going to expand to 12 teams again. I just can't see how they don't. They're not going to give away potential revenue by not having a conference championship game.

And when they add 2 teams, they're going to take either from the BE or ACC. And if it's from the ACC like many think, I can't see UCONN or Lousiville saying no to the ACC.
Boehim is on his way out, and Pitt has no marquee football coach, yet that didn't stop them from taking those programs. And WVU left for the BIG 12 for something like 3-4 million more than they'd get here.

It's a very precarious position, because the monetary difference might not be huge, but if UCONN perceives Lousiville as on it's way out... then they'll pre-empt them and run for the door.

Bottom line to me, a new tv deal is great, but it doesn't end the possible shuffling. Good news is, St Johns basketball can be competitive with or without a strong big east.
