My endorsement for mullin

Sure has been frustrating but the mullin bashing and us not having big east caliber players is funny. You wanna complain about roster depth i will give you that and its unfortunate we have transfers sitting out and one rehabbing sitting out. Lovett "injury" huge as i totally think ncaas was a reachable goal this year. We were built on guard play as our strength and poof a big asset changed that and our rotation. All that said and somehow mullin has done a great job keeping this depleated team very competitve against top competition. Maybe we took providence (maybe not as ponds did get hurt while we were up in this game) and depaul lightly but all other games we were in it until the end. Unlike many other top teams

Villanova beats xavier by 24. At gtown by 32 (was 42 when they took guys out). Providence by 20 and yet "terrible" mullin and depleated sju only by 7

Xavier beats seton hall on road by 9. Creighton by 22. Marquette tonight by 19 and yet "terrible" mullin and depleated sju by 6 at xavier.

Creighton beats seton hall by 17. Butler by 11. At gtown by 24. Providence by 19 and yet "terrible" mullin and depleated sju by 7 and 5.

Seton hall beat a real good texas tech team by 10. and yet "terrible" mullin and depleated sju by 5.

More examples but im getting tired typing. point is im as frustrated as you all are but mullin is doing all he can with what we have now. Again complain about roster depth this year but losing zach brown which affected sima and losing sid wilson made part of this problem. Staff decided to lock up depth for next year with a couple real solid pick ups with the sit out transfers since they were unable to get more depth for this year.

And no not referring to gtown as top team. Just pointing out a couple of their blowouts.

We need stability. No other coach that we may get will love STJ more than Chris. I believe that he has a very difficult job in motivating his team now. He needs our support, he deserves it for the joy he gave us as the greatest player ever at STJ.

Eric , good post . Yes , the Roster did not contemplate the loss of LoVett . Actually , as you said , thin to begin with ... and , while Clark has been a nice player , he doesn’t have a big man’s game . He plays like a small forward , with little handle and not much slashing to the basket . His game and Ahmad’s game , are much the same , except Clark doesn’t totally lose control and taking shots , better left to pick up games on the Playground . Simon does everything , except shoot well and BE opponents give him the outside shot , knowing he is a slasher and won’t hurt them from outside . Commentators on
Nearly every broadcast take issue with his form . Perhaps Mullin and Richmond will work with him over the summer . Otherwise , he will be defended the same way next year . It limits our offensive strategy to have , 2 Perimeter forward who do not rebound and a combo guard in Simon , who is not a outside threat . Owens likes the 3 a little too much and while he isn’t a bad shot , it leaves him away from the basket and in position to rebound any misses on the offensive end . Ponds has carried a load and has lost his outstde shot . Teams are playing him strictly to drive to the hoop and he isn’t taking the pop up jumper or , floater like he did last year . Too much is put on him and tesms are defensive him asvyhe only real offensive threat .And , even he can’t score enough for us to win . 37 against Nova and 33 against G town wasn’t up to victory . With LoVett the whole offense takes a different dimension .

He has my support for 1.5 more years. 8 wins and 35 loses is unneceptable for virtually any new coach in a major conference program. Chris is no exception. 9-9 next year, regardless of the inevitable injuries and transfers, is the only way I will not call for a change in leadership in this team.

sick of people pointing to close losses as signs of progress. yea, i guess better than blowouts (like when we LOST TO DEPAUL), but 0-9 is 0-9 any way you look at it.

I support Mullin in terms of the cards he has been dealt. To be fair, and there has just not been enough talent there to toss blame, and on a one by one basis, you can't blame transfers on him. Each one has been examined. They grabbed bodies for year one, and since then the talent recruited has been better and better, causing some guys to flee just on the signing of someone who ended up not coming here.

I'm also not big on micromanaging every decision or lack of it, as if one of those decisions would definitely make up a 5 or 6 point loss. Maybe yes, maybe no. But talent more than makes up for coaching deficiencies.

So while I would give support and continue to do so, that's not exactly an endorsement. Mullin has to prove he can win here before that can happen. I do believe we are on the road, despite this miserable conference record.

I hope Chris is the answer to what I have wanted since Louie retired. A coach that loves St. John's and is going to be a lifer as the coach of this team for the next 20 years. In that time, I am sure he will become a much netter coach and recruiter as he will find his system and go after players that fit it. In return, players will want to come here to play in that system, but for goodness sake, we have to stop the coaching carousel and let someone learn on the job because no big name is coming here so I am all for riding with our legend.

It isn't fair to judge CM until he has a full roster of BE players at his disposal
Hopefully, that will be the case next year
To his credit, the kids play hard for him but we just don't have the depth to compete right now
I do think that a change in staff would be advisable
I would swap out St Jean for a seasoned coach with D-1 coaching experience
I believe that CM can (and will) succeed at St John's
We need to have a little more patience
Not comparing him to Coach K, but Duke wouldn't be Duke if they had prematurely pulled the plug on him

In simplest terms, CM is obviously back next year & will have the opportunity to enjoy a successful season if Ponds returns. I assume SP will. Hopefully he also makes the perpetually suggested staff change and keeps a potentially solid 18 class on board.

That said, not dancing with a full roster or at least flirting with a bid, could certainly lead to a tough decision on Chris' or SJU's part. If so, the world is not hopefully ending. :)

It is the job of Mullin to make sure he has a full compliment of players by year 3. By year 4 there is absolutely no exceptions.

It will be interesting to see if Matt A. sticks around after this year. If you read the Maven on twitter he was the one who had the loose lips and helped Zach with his article. Matt A leaves maybe no Brooks?

I certainly am not saying mullin has made all the right moves and he is learning on the job. But he is st johns through and through and of course he wants to win as much and if not more than us fans want. I do think next year is the year if we are not where we all want to be (ncaa's) then the gripes that I see here and get from my other st johns fan friends not on the site are very warranted based on a full roster. Hoping all our recruits remain on board and no other defections and we will have a full roster for once and one that has height and more meat on it. Things that do frustrate me are when a player gets 2 reach in fouls in the first 4 minutes of game and then has to sit and also during the last gtown game watching marvin clark and Tarik owens get their 5th fouls reaching in in situations they should know not to do that. Our offensive threats need to understand to be more understanding of silly fouls in these situations.

I am a Mullin supporter and feel that it would be a terrible blow to the program if a change had to be made after next season but I still can't get my head around the following chain of events that he allowed to happen that had nothing to do with bad luck or injury.
1 A poor rebounding team loses who was probably its best rebounder when Sima leaves
2 Clark transfers in and probably most observers feel he is, although not that big in size is the type of player that will help improve the rebounding imbalance. He practices with the team all year and this season we find out that is not his game at all
3 How could the staff expect this roster to be able to play big east teams in the paint. Even if they brought in one big they still would have been a sprained ankle away from where we are today
4 Did they think Ali was going to develop into a rebounder after three years or that Owens was going to put on twenty pounds
5 I just can't understand how they let this obvious deficiency help wreck this season

Excellent observations!
WE are moving in the right direction.

Moving in the right direction? Unless you’re rooting against the program General, you’re out of your mind. Even the Athletic Director concedes we’ve taken a step back.

Can't consider Clark a rebounder HE IS ALWAYS HANG OUT at the 3pt line and out of position . THINK he does not want to be a banger but when we have rebounders he can have a roll to play.

Yep, we'll go down 17 @ Butler, then the tease (cut to 3 or 4pnts), but in the end we'll lose.
Every game anyone can predict how the game will go.
Why can't they start the game on fire and go up 10-15pnts in the first half? Maybe build it to 17pnts at the under 16min TO, then put in Trimble, Yakwe, and yes even Ali for 6min. Maybe we'll still have a 4,or 5pnts lead, then put in our main guys for the final 10minutes after a 6min break.
It never works out like that though, we always gotta be behind.

Hey, well isn't Owens doing the same? Shouldn't Owens and Clark be bangin down low?
So maybe Chris wants them shooting 3's?????? We'll know more if Keita starts shooting 3's next.

If Chris just wants everyone laughing 3's and doesn't care about rebounds then he already needs to go.
I would hope Chris understand that each player has a position to play, and not have everyone just take happy 3's all damn day weeeeeeeeeee. CHRIS YOU DO UNDERSTAND THAT RIGHT?????

Yes a step back this year - clearly!
Like others I neither like to regress nor lose
HOWEVER
I'm looking at a longer term picture and why not?
whether it's raising kids, growing a garden, finding and moving along with a career
takes time
in this case more than a mere three years
from where we started which was minor league, division 3 talent

patience and process are sayings because they are often true
Countless examples exist - it took General George Patton many mistakes, training blunders, 'failures' before he and his tanks were up and running against the nefarious WWII baddest of bad guys
He did not succeed overnight

Of course this is only college basketball, important to we fans, but not much more
and there are legitimate explanations for this year's disappointment - no fake news here

now if we get the players scheduled to be here AND
it (regressing, losing) happens again next year
well then it's time to critique
all the best Boo

I'm not saying this is true or not but maybe mullin is protecting our guys from further foul trouble (as we have a tendency for the silly fouls) from banging underneath because of depth issues? Earlier in the year the rebounding margins were a lot closer as I remember us crashing the boards more often.

The rebounding margins were closer bc we were playing mid-majors
