"Kids probably know me from video games."
His talk of building character (a constant reference point in this presser) and how it relates to their overall sports careers...how can these young players not respect this stuff?

Fwiw everybody plays NBA 2K video games and there is a game mode called "MyTeam" where you build your own team and you get coins by winning and with coins you can buy legends and mullin is in the game. So there's another reason recruits will know him and that's what mullin was alluding to with that quote

That was a great press conference. You can see the excitement from Mullin and Looie.
The one thing I want to address is people saying that kids won't know who Mullin is. First off, most of them do if they were born in this country. Second, would any of them know who a Hurley brother is or who Masiello is? They are much more likely to be impressed after finding out who Mullin is compared to anybody else we could've gotten.

stepped in late but caught Mullin's comments and the Q and A. This was AWESOME.
Mullin speaks about St. John's like you hear Coach K speak about Duke and Dean Smith (and Roy Williams) spoke/speak about UNC. Those programs are basketball royalty and have each created a family which takes care of its former players, etc. For years, WE (St. John's fans AND St. John's coaches) have said we are basketball royalty and talked about our place and history, but coming from the basketball coach/staff it didnt seem to ring true, and honestly, I dont know how many of US truly believed it anymore. When Chris Mullin talks about it, not only do I believe, but I feel it. It is obvious. And I don't think it's just obvious to us as St. John's fans. It's obvious period. It's going to be obvious to the AAU coaches, the HS coaches, the kids, the players etc. There is already a different aura around the program. If we act like we are, and we believe we are, WE ARE.

What a moment; this guy wants passionately for St. John's to get back! Love it!
Brooklyn accent, quite a difference from SL, not that SL represented our University badly, he did not.
Francesa did have one insightful comment about SL, he said he felt like SL didn't fit completely and comfortably in with the whole St. John's persona. (I think about that he is right).

Was off today, able to watch the press conference: a few take aways:
1.) Player Development: never heard, Lavin or Norm discuss this, discussed fundamentals, shooting, passing, defense, ball handling, how important that is, alluded to players going into the NBA and not being a finished product. To me the most important thing he said in the presser.
As well as character off the court.
2.) Tradition - brought up Joe Lapchick and Frank McGuire as well as Coach C, Chris is St. John's therefore he can speak of it.
3.) Also talked about earning the jersey, the jersey is just not given away.
No BS seemed serious he is going to surround himself with a great staff, and will care about the brand and winning.
Also Bob Oliva and Peter D'Angelo behind the hire body language looked very happy.
Seems like a more positive university since Father Harrington was let go.
