Mullin Press Conference

As much I am a shameless rooter for Chris Mullin, today changed my mind.

I walked in ecstatic that our new coach is Chris Mullin.

After listening to Chris speak, I walked out ecstatic because our new coach is the right man for the job.

Coach Freeman
Coach McGuire
Coach Lapchick
Coach Carnesecca
Coach Mullin

Sounds right. It only took 30 years of preparation. If St. John's has a Camelot, it's Mullin.

Would you bet against Mullin after listening to him? He's a man with a plan and a mission.

Yes all good, the plan and the mission, don't forget the passion! You could see it in Chris' tone and in his eyes - we will be one of the top teams in the NCAA - he's not settling for anything but...

You could notice his hands and fingers tapping the table, restless, energized, he's ready to go!

Hell I would have never bet against the Icon before listening to him.

When Coach Carnesseca gave Chris the "peacock card" card I couldn't help but think how important that card was to him. Coach Lapchick retired in 1965 and probably gave it to Louie when he took over ( my freshman year, btw). So he's been carrying that thing around for 50 years! I think symbollically it was like Coach C saying "we finally have someone here to continue the line...Lapchick to Carnessecca to Mullin".

BTW somone posted a picture of that card here a while back. Any chance of posting it again?

Agree completely. The day really felt like it was a direct line from Lapchick to Carnesecca to Mullin. It was as though everybody else was just interim, and the true line of descent has been restored.

Lou passing that card onto Chris, after clearly not giving it to anyone else (including his longtime assistant Mahoney) really cemented the feeling of the passing of the torch, at the time and place and to the person Louie really wanted to give it to.

Very special.

@NYPost_Brazille: "We're going to be the fittest team in the country, no doubt about that and we're going to play our tails off, I can guarantee that." #sjubb

Sounds like ADR is going to need an inhaler.

Think about it this way, if ADR gets into shape and becomes the player he has the potential to be, Mullin has a powerful showpiece for player development.

I think AA is much more involved than ADR will be next year. More Mullin type of player

Of many things said about ADR, many scouts tout his basketball IQ. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Chrissie loves the kid. And please, for a teenager to have lost 100lbs in high school, can we be more positive about what he can accomplish at a still young age? Sheeesh. Even on a day like this, y'all gotta let that ugly side out don't y'alls!

Peace. :)

Can the mods put a block on the word chrissie ever being used ? :)

There was this girl one of my kids played with in 7th grade. Overweight. Slow as molasses. Was so out of shape she'd literally fall over on the court. Her father claimed she was going to play bball at CTK. I laughed to myself. Her father would get her up early in the morning and jog with her. I lost track of her, and then saw this CTK game vs. NHP when NHP had a great player, named Karcic. The girl was like 6th man on CTK, and had shed every ounce of excess wright. Vionca Murray. Ended up with a basketball schollie to Va Tech and finished at Syracuse. Nice kid.

Don't count ADR out, and give him credit for coming as far as he did. Remember, Chris Mullin lost 30 pounds AFTER he made the NBA. Mullin is promising the fittest team in college basketball. If ADR gets in shape, watch out.

For those of us who have watched St. John's basketball from day one of Looie's career, it was great to see Looie so proud and so happy. You could just see the suffering he went through for many years, watching his beloved program fall into disgrace after Pittsburgh, then endure some horrible seasons and embarrassing losses on our home court. This is just an amazing story for the program, and for the city. I know Chris feels an obligation to Coach. He will not let him down.

Oh wait, stop please wait a minute. It dawned upon me. I'm a little slow at times. Does this thirty-pound loser, this shedding ounces of weight, this Chris Mullin and his "in shape" obsession apply to fans? Wow...!!!
Does he expect we on this board to be in shape
too? The best, the fittest fans, even superior to one and done fans at UKy?
Why maybe we should return to the halcyon days of ... his predecessors...wow

Sorry about that, getting a little carried away, "slap-happy", all the excitement, I think I'd better go downstairs and get something to eat, Chinese food or maybe some pulled pork...a few beers and I don't even drink beer...
:)

Seriously it's been such a wondrous few days and I am grateful to have remained a Redmen follower through all these years - and grateful for sll the informstive sharing by my fellow posters!

All the best

Today I just felt an overwhelming amount of pride as an alumni. Unfortunately my college years were all during the Norm error and my fandom was summarized as "woe is me". The feeling that we are heading in the right direction towards brighter sky's is amazing!

I finally got to watch the news conference in full. This was a magical, emotional event. I think we have a chance to return to the days of Billy Goodwin, David Russell, Malik Sealy, and our 1985 dream team.

You get the sense no one will work harder to get us there.

Welcome, Chris.

Go Johnnies !!

The magic is back !!!

Not only do I agree there is a strong sense that returning to those days is inevitable, but I have a feeling that we'll be seeing a lot more of our former players in and around SJU. Mullin isn't just a unifying force for fans, I get the sense that all of our former players know and like him also and want to witness this and be a part of it.

The biggest problem I had with yesterday is that you weren't introduced as Jerseyshorejohhny. Shame on Bobby G."
