This is a very young Duke team with only senior Grayson Allen (14.8 PPG, 4.5 APG) with significant years of experience in the main rotation. They have a super strong inside game led by two extremly gifted freshman bigs Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter (14.5 PPG, 9.3 Reb 617 FG %). Bagley III, in particular, is immensely talented. He has had seventeen double doubles already this season and shoots 60 % from the field while averaging better than a double double for the season (21.5 PPG and 11.4 Reb). He is probably going to be the NBA number one pick in this year's draft and if not the number one certainly very close to it (two or three at the lowest). There are other very good Freshman in the regular rotation including point guard Trey Duval (11.3 PPG, 6.0 APG) and shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. (14.7 PPG, 4.4 Reb). Both of these Freshman are important pieces.
Despite all of this really great young talent this Duke team has not yet grown into the defensive buzzsaw that has characterized some of their best teams. They definitely can be scored on and like young gifted teams sometimes do have lapses during sections of games and ultimately try to rely on their superior talent to overcome that.
Also on the road in the ACC Duke is just 3 and 2. They lost on the road to BC by five and NC State by eleven. Their three wins were at Miami by eight, at Wake Forest by fourteen and by thirty five against last place Pittsburgh.
Personally I believe we can play competitively if Bagley III and Carter don't totally destroy us on the inside and get our rim protectors (Owens, Yakwe) in early foul trouble. The spread at eleven seems about right to me. Covering that would not be inconceivable in my opinion.
Go St. John's!!!!
