Minnesota, Fri. Nov. 18, 9pm, BTN/570AM

Jon Rothstein-
Friday's game between Minnesota and St. John's has a big game feel. Two undefeated teams trying to regain respectability. Here. We. Go.

I guess Jon's employers don't discourage drinking on the job.

Rothstein the consummate BS artist, what nonsense.

Freudenburg is far from a bad athlete. Kid is actually quite a good athlete. He's just overly tentative out there right now.

Agree. I think he moves well and will get going once he knocks a few down.

Happy to see they went out a full day early. Especially as this is most of the team's first away game at this level, additional time to get the feel for developing a routine on the road.

They have a private plane?

Also happy to see Minny's rotation played a pretty full game last night.

This is a near impossible game to create a spread for. SJU and Minny were both terrible last year and much changed this year. That spread I suspect is mainly their undefeated status, being at home, and an extra win under their belt... That's about it.

We need to defend and play offense like we know how. I wouldn't mind somebody developing that d-lo type intensity and leadrship? I suspect Lovett is that guy in a more understated way...

Just a question, have we played any zone in our first 2 games and for how long? Think we will need zone defense sometimes?

Agree, no way this has a big game feel outside of the people on this message board.

But Jon doesn't bother me. He's a hype man.
Like a younger Vitale, he avoids criticizing and just points out the good for every program.

If every reporter did that it would be nauseating. But for a national guy.. it's ok.

Just my 2 cents

Ok, I will pay attention for the first time this season. Nice performances against vastly inferior competition don't mean much.

Even if Minnesota was terrible last season, we will learn a lot tonight, especially if we are outplayed.

Not directed at you specifically but to all overhyping the importance of this game; with all due respect we will really learn nothing of substance tonight; good or bad. We have improved our talent; translating that into a winning culture, a sustainable program, which is what all of us want, takes time. We live in an instant gratification, disposable world but building a program takes time - just ask Jay Wright or Coach K. Last year we were young without talent, this year, even younger with talent. Sorry to all but IMO we have enough talent and it appears positive chemistry that we are going to throw in some eye opening surprises and are young enough and still finding our way that we are going to mix in some head shakers. We will have learned something 3/4 of the way through conference play IMO, not from the 3rd game of the season.

Not disputing your post at all. IT only amplifies what I intended to point out, which is you learn very little in the preseason games or the games against low D1 competition. You will begin to see tonight where our new guys may stack up against D1 competition, and yes, we will improve as these guys get their baptism to Big East play, but this is a big ten team and we will learn something tonight about our newer players.

For me, the thing to watch is our defense. I want to see a win - but I think a good gauge of this team's development will be playing better D. Moving their feet, not leaving their feet on ball fakes, preventing easy baskets in the lane etc.

Im not worried about the blocks or the help defense. That's there already.
But look to see our guys staying disciplined and locking down their man.

See I have a different take on our defense. I don't mind the gambling because we have 2 quick guards another in Ellison with good length and 3 legit shot blockers. I think the gambling will help get us some easy baskets which since we don't have a low post scorer we will sorely need.

Everyone seems content with the offense and having 2 exciting guards does help but I predict once we play better teams we will struggle to score. As great as they seem, way too much pressure to carry the offense is going to fall on two guys who have played 2 college games.

Obviously you can't expect Ponds & LoVett to continue to generate 60% of the offense, which they did most of the last game if I recall correctly. Ahmed was brought here to score & they will get him going. I did expect Yakwe to be more active offensively, but it is a small sample, as Logen noted on another thread. Perhaps a fair phase one evaluation is after the Bahamas tourney.

Desco's point above on defense makes sense to me as well.

I get that this year is all about development of the younger guys, but honestly I think we might be a little better than I thought and have outside shot at an NIT. I know it is spilt milk but again Jones would have certainly made us better this year. I think people are crazy saying he wouldn't have played.
Question if you need a basket down low would you rather have the ball in Jones hands or any of the bigs on the current roster?

Jones would have certainly made us better this year.

And I suspect worse next year. His style, get position to bang down low in a slowdown game, does not fit with what CM is trying to build and who he has recruited.

I think that with a young team, we should learn alot about our players and coaches in every game.
