Mid Season Report Card
After we blow out Nova tomorrow will some of you skeptics move over to cautious optimists?
Pollyannaism is as nauseating as being a defeatist. It would be wise to take one game at a time. Especially for a program that has had the malocchio for most of the past quarter century. After 3 losing seasons I understand the glee and pride but let's be consistently a "contender" after Shamorie Ponds is gone if you want to convert the skeptics in the long term. As Beast said "enjoy what's in front of you" .;)
After we blow out Nova tomorrow will some of you skeptics move over to cautious optimists?
Ironically one of our 114 friends who is much more even keel than I am and Mullins biggest supporter is very nervous tomorrow and I'm the opposite. I wont declare an actual prediction on this site because I'm superstitious and am still reeling from my seton hall prediction but I'm confident tomorrow stand by preseason prediction that we are going to overall wreck teams this year and it's a Lavin first year like payback year

Agree. When I recognize this look to be sustainable year after year, then I'll no longer be skeptical. Otherwise, color me in the same way as maher.... Skeptical but happy. Very happy!

Re: To Beast.... Appreciate it, man! Likewise per the love. ;)

Me an a lot of people thought Lavin was best coach ever for SJU after his first year and that didnt exactly work out

Jarvis first 2 years were my favorite as a fan and I prayed he wouldn't go to Wizards. That didnt exactly work out

When Norm beat Nc State the first year ( Julius Hodge ) I remember a thread that night people already wanting an extension for him ( not me although I was a Norm defender in the first 4 or so years )

While there is no Sly Fox bus trip to Nova now lets get a great win tomorrow like that one

Jay Wright has been targeting this game like Bob Baffert targets the first Saturday in May. He knows his competition.

If LJ and Mustapha light it up there's a very good chance the Johnnies escape with a win.

It's asking a lot to win three straight road games in this league. They won the first two. If they win tomorrow, Katz and Marillac may be right.

Agree with you. Wright is an elite coach and knows we can be the class of the league if things continue to go well.

I'd say this is the best 3 point team we've ever put on the floor.

Mullin has the right composure as a coach. Mitch too. Greg is learning that from them and of course was schooled by his dad. When you play 1000 nba games and end up in the HOF you know that the only game that matters is the next one. The only possession that matters is the next one.

Mullin lives his life that way, over 10,000 one day at a time saved his life. I'm glad that guys like 72, who I personally like alot, are learning they were wrong about him.

Maher is never against anyone which makes him an awesome person, but like him, I had my initial doubts about mullin and expressed them strongly here. I just came around a lot sooner, by the beginning of season 3.

I love olv and ralph. My thinking is that if you were my bro in laws friend all those years ago, he cant be a bad guy. Thanks.

In sports there is always something to prove tomorrow, either claim what you want or defend what you have. The needle is finally pointing in the bc right direction for sju, in all ways.

Just enjoy this guys.

I’m with you Marillac. Nothing wrong with expecting a win here. True very difficult to win on the road but with the team we have I feel we can win every game in the big east this year. Road or home. Im sure jay wright will have his team ready for us. Well. Mullin will have this team ready for them. We have a lot of payback to provide to the big east for many years.

Thanks Beast. Get Joe to a game this year. He’s overdue.

I had doubts about Mullin and staff after the hire and up till December of year two. Mainly kept them to the few guys in 114. In year two during the Big East season I was solid on him. They had fixed the unbalanced classes and were starting to win at a high level. In year three the year to year progression was evident and I liked the strategy to pull in high quality transfers. I didn’t agree with the negative posting during the off season by “insiders” but took the approach that all have a right to their opinion and the board is all about that no matter how I felt. I’m happy we’re all enjoying this so far. Let’s hope it continues and the base continues to come together behind our home town guy. The FUN is just getting started.

Winning and “routing” Nova on road are two different animals. I like our roster v Nova’s but an 18 point rout seems a huge reach. Enthusiasm sometimes gets in way of objectivity. In this case, hope to be wrong & we win easily, but I expect a close one & probably a loss. That said going 3 & 1 would be awesome in a tough initial four games with three on the road. Go Johnnies!

As for me, I'll take an 8 point win. My heart needs a little less Red stress.
Go St. John's.

I have nothing but respect for Wright. He is a great coach and he is the best representative this conference could ever ask for and may have ever had--and it has had some great people.

That said, he lost 4 underclassmen from a killer team. Donte was a huge surprise. It also seems he missed on the very talented JQ, who doesn't seem to have much between the ears.

Gillespie is a good 7th man. Cremo is a stop-gap. Booth is a great 4th or 5th option. I've never been high on Paschall as a feature player. We will destroy them 1-3 until JQ gets his act together and plays. They struggle to score.

And fluffier is a valid label but hater isn't? Care to elaborate?
I wasn't sure what a "fluffer" was so looked it up. Also looked up "fluffier" Learn something every day (that I didn't want to learn)
Haters always gonna hate so I guess fluffers always gonna fluff.. Oh the ads from that search you must be getting :)

Agree completely. Nova is down, FOR THEM, but still a very good team. They have lost close games and we have by and large played close games against everybody. We can win, no doubt, but a rout? We also could lose, no doubt. Anything can happen but other than "on any given day" there is to reason to think we will blow them out. Biggest reason to doubt it is we become a different team with a double digit lead, have not showed the discipline to put anybody away yet.

Keep in mind that being in a lot of close games helps put ice water in your veins down the stretch, as opposed to blowing everyone out comfortably and then crumbling in tight spots. We've done what we had to in order to win every single game, and our guys have grown and benefitted from that experience. Ponds, Simon, LJ, Clarke, and Heron have each taken turns at big plays in critical moments. That type of experience and resulting confidence can make us a beast of a team to defend down the stretch of close games.

This will be what hurts Duke against us. Pride of their lone loss, they've been cruising in track meets.

Disagree with you on Booth. I think he is a fine #1 or #2 option on a solid team and a legit 1st team/2nd team all Big East candidate. He was insane on the road in Kansas against a team loaded with guards. And I think Paschall is a really good player as well. Those two are a legit 1/2 in this league for a solid team and winning/heady players that can fill up a stat sheet.
