Craig and boomer discussing the mets wanted St. John's to buy 5000 tickets for chris mullin to throw out the first pitch. Sju did the right thing and declined the mets offer. The mets wanted chris to throw it out the day before he was scheduled to do it for the yankees.

In one of Matt A's interviews he spoke a little about this. He did not mention the Mets asking SJU to buy 5000 tickets. He said they were working on the "details"; I assumed that was a date. He said the staff where all Mets fans and were looking forward to doing this. He did mention the josteling between the Mets and the Yankees to get him first. I would be careful in believeing what Carton says about the Mets, although he is a fan he is quick to jump on them whenever possible, facts be damed. That said I would not put this past the Mets marketing team.; If they wanted him before the Yankees why ask the school to buy the 5000 tickets? They should have given them tickets to get more representation at the ballpark.. St. Johns & the Mets have worked together in the past very well. I hope there is more to this then meets the eye.

As a Mets fan, nonsense like this from the Wilpons is an everyday occurrence. Only they can ruin a feel good story and turn it into a p.r. mess. SJU and the Mets always had a good relationship.

There would have been a number of SJU alums in attendance that day anyway (like myself, and I would have taken my kids).

I swear, if Moses wanted to throw out the first pitch, the Mets would complain about possible water damages caused during his windup, and demand a security deposit covering all plumbing costs.

I wish the commissioner would step in and tell them to sell if they are going to act like they are small market team

So bush league. The Mets for their shenanigans should post a billboard free for a year in left field saying, "St. John's - We Are New York's Team" Let's start a petition.

"The team “retracted the demand” and then requested that Mullin throw out the first pitch the day before he’s scheduled to take the mound in the Bronx, which was also denied, according to Carton."

I am not a Mets fan and I don't hate the Mets either. But these kinds of actions by the Mets, specifically the Wilpons, does seem to be an ongoing practice. If I were around that day, and Chris were throwing out the first pitch, even I would be there.

I'm not going to get worked up about this. The whole notion of certain celebrities throwing out the first pitch is designed to mutual benefit for the team and the individual. Mullin isn't throwing out pitches because he has a good arm - it is tp hype our own program and generate ticket sales and visibility that could help recruiting. As such it is supposed to be symbiotic.

The Mets are in first place and already they are discounting tickets on Travelzoo. It's the group sales department's job to drum up ticket sales and I'm sure someone in group sales read all the press the Mullin hiring has generated and got a little overenthusiastic in terms of expectations. I'm sure there is a lot of pressure being put of group sales to attract all types of organizations to the ballpark to generate sales. Once a game is over, that potential ticket revenue is over.

I agree with the criticism of the Wilpons, but IMO this was a reach by someone in group sales, and not a Wilpon decision. That person should know we struggle to put 8 or 9 thousand of our own fans into MSG, no less for 5,000 of our own going to see our coach throw out a ball.

Now what I think would be really creative is an SJU season ticket being bundled with a couple of Mets or Yankees tickets that are discounted as part of the bundle. That would be pretty cool, and I think I would go for it.

I have 2 stories about the Mets and their thinking.

I was a season ticket holder for the Mets for many years. I had partial plans and then converted to the full season three years before their move to Citi Field. My seats at Shea were Loge reserved section 9 row 3, a great seat inside of 1st base. The Mets then informed me that in the new stadium my seats would be in the promenade level, 1 section before the foul pole in right field, at a significantly higher cost. Needless to say I wasn't pleased with the location and let them know this. They said I could enter a reallocation pool as others would not be keeping the seats allocated to them as well. But here's the kicker.....I would have to pay a 10% NON REFUNDABLE deposit to enter the reallocation pool. Thank you but no thank you.

Story #2
Having not renewed my seats as I said above, the Mets kept reaching out to me to sell me various plans, which I never took them up on. The most interesting offer was when the Mets hosted the 2013 All Star game at Citi. I received a call asking if I wanted All Star Game tickets. Of course I said. Who would'nt? The rep is telling me the sections available and various prices. After agreeing to purchase the seats we discussed, think it was around $330/seat, he informs me that I also have to purchase the Home Run Derby @ $300/seat, The Futures Game @ $250/seat and The Celebrity Softball game at $200/seat to get the All Star Game seats. Thank you.. Have a nice day. Why waste my time? I wound up purchasing seats on StubHub for the HomeRun Derby at $75 a tix sitting behind the plate in the promenade level. One of the most boring events I've ever attended.
LETS GO METS!!!

the Mets did build St Johns their ballpark and donated it to them. They used it for a season as the Queens Kings before they moved to Brooklyn and became the Cyclones. Im not aware of any ballpark the Yankees gave them

Basically same thing happened we me and when I cancelled they acted like Glen Close in Fatal Attraction. Wouldn't stop emailing me and calling.

I had similar seats in the loge just to the right of home plate for three seasons before the move to citifield. The closest similar seats at Citifield would have cost $150/ticket, more than 3 times what the loge seats cost in the final shea season. After being stuck in the OF in Citifeld, I canceled after that first season.

I did buy seats from the torn down Shea Stadium, but didn't open the boxes for more than a year, at which point I discovered that a forklift pierced the box and shattered the cast metal seat supports. The Mets were great about it, and had someone drive to my house to pick up the old seats and had new seats shipped. The guy who picked them up actually was responsible for creating the Mets HOF room. When I told him about my lousy Citifield seats he said the problem was that in Citifield they really didn't have anything analogous to loge seating, and that loge season ticket holders were rightfully upset.

While the WIlpons may be asses, the organization does have some really good guys working for them.

The Mets did not build Kaiser Stadium (as it is now known) and donate it to St. John's. The Ballpark was built by the City of New York as part of the deal to house the Met's short Season Rookie club until their new home in Coney Island was completed.

Despite the protest in the above articles, the field was built. As part of the deal, I believe local leagues get a chance to use it on occasions during the summer months.

This was a case where the university wanted Mullin to throw out a first pitch way more than the Mets did. I don't see the Mets caring one way or another about Chris Mullin.

Since this happened before my SJU days I wasn't aware of the background. Thanks for posting this.

Glad this actually went through. I really enjoyed going to the games between or after class.

It is just bad timing. With the School year done, buying 5000 tickets and giving them away to students is just not logistically possible. It would have to have happened in early April for it to work.

I worked in group sales for the Mets for three years, '97-'99, as well as interning for them after freshman year in the strike shortened 1994 season. First, the Mets have always been a welcoming employer to St. John's students and graduates (particularly our Sport Management program). They offered seminars with their marketing and PR execs, and treated employees well. That team in the Bronx, so far as friends and colleagues would attest to, did none of those things. I know this was years ago, but many of our own remain employed there. As far as this particular event, I'm sure the owners know none of these requests made, and that potentially one or more of our own grads tried to attach a sales benefit to this, which is precisely their job. Before you bash the Mets on this, consider that St. John's alum have and continue to start and enjoy their careers with the Mets, and while the other team may enjoy considerably more success on the field and in their bank account, they have provided less for us.
