Memphis to the Big East

Great news, and importantly, it means the BE is taking bball seriously. With the addition of Memphis, the BE regains a top tier program, since we lost 2. Since I think UCF, and Houston are decent programs, overall we added an elite program and 2 decent programs, while losing 2 elite programs. I would rather go on a road trip to Memphis, Houston or UCF than Cuse or Pitt anyway. Memphis also gives the BE another huge market, and I think it will elevate their program, while it elevates ours. Now, when Lavin recruits the south, he can say you will be able to battle teams like Memphis, a premier program. In all fairness, I don't really see a huge difference between Memphis and Cuse/Pitt over the last decade.

Upstate:

I'm very pleased with the direction of the program and how can we not be? It has surpassed the past decade in all meaningful areas.

And speaking of teams leaving conferences. One never knows do one? is Boston College so jolly in the ACC?

The Big East will move on, with many fine programs - and the main thing for me - SJU is and will be relevant again. My focus is on the Red Storm not the Orange or the Panthers. Let them all go. Syraacuse will miss its Northeast rivals and the proximity to the Garden etc. Both may lose some of their respective grips on NYC kids. We'll survive and thrive.

Oh what do I know??? Maybe BC is thrilled.

all the best

Syracuse will be playing more in the Garden in the immediate future then they have in the past few years as MSG management looks to fill the seats for College Basketball. Duke Vs Syracuse, NC Vs. Syracuse, will be in the garden. $ talks. Until we can put a consistent product on the court, and I too believe it is comming, the Garden will look for big games that will sell out.

Do you honestly think that those upstaters are gonna allow dook and nc not to be played in front of 30,000 in the carrier dome?
come on, be serious.

Kind of sad for the loyal citizens and Orange fans in the city of Syracuse when the two biggest projected draws to the Carrier are moved 200 miles and 5 hours south. That is the equivalent of St. John's playing its two biggest home games in Boston! LMAO! So they sell out the Garden because of the huge alumni base in the NY metro area! Big F N deal! What about the students and citizens of Syracuse that walk and drive through 2 feet of snow to watch Clemson, BC, Wake, VaTech, etc. No rivalries there and likely never will be. Sad!

SSG, Sorry if my post came off the wrong way but overall my point was 1) I think it is great for many reasons 2) the addition of Memphis proves we dont need Cuse and Pitt and 3) it just gives Lavin another arsenal.

I think our program is heading in the right direction. I love this core group of freshman, and I think Lavin is the best. I also could care less about Pitt and Cuse, and in fact I think they will struggle in the ACC.

I think he meant Duke and NC would give up home games.

So you think the top two programs in the ACC will give Syracuse TWO home games in NY and not play them in Carolina? LOL!
The Orange are the harlots here and they will sell out there home town fans to appease the ACC kings Duke and UNC so that their large NY area alums get to see them without having to travel up to Syracuse. Syracuse and the Dookies would likely split the tickets IMO. No skin off our redmen's noses. That is all assuming the post-Boeheim, post-coach K era will be as big attractions as they are now.

I really don't think it matters how Syracuse plays in a league game at MSG. Syracuse fans, without a BET to watch Syracuse play 3 games plus a game vs. SJU, will gladly watch any competitor and sell out the place.

Memphis would be a great addition, and isn't a bad road game to travel to either.

I swear I was just about to write this. lol I love the addition of Memphis and I really love the idea of a little mini vacation there since I've never been there before

Wait til Hopkins takes over and Boeheim steps down in the next few years. Couple that with being in a Southern league and we'll see how strong their fans travel if they aren't a top team for a few years. Lots of factors involved.

When the yahoos fans for Syracuse University point to great games against Dook and UNC  I remind them that their switch to the Southern conference also means exciting games against Clemson, VaTeck, Wake Forest, Florida State, Georgia Teck and other typically unexciting teams.

In December 2010 I was told by an impeccable source that Boeheim's contract provides that he can quit anytime he wants and become SU's Senior Associate AD for the same salary. The source indicated that s/he bought that Boeheim would quit after next year with 2 years left on his contract. Lets see how well recruiting ace Hopkins with no head coaching experience does as the head coach.

Agree wholeheartedly. Why do they take over our arena? Because they have a coach with 900 wins. Almost double that of our beloved Louie. Syracuse can't replace a guy like that. Especially with a long time assistant(Hopkins) and entering uncharted territory in a new region entirely, where you're not the big dog any more. As good as Hopkins could very well be, you can't replace an icon on the recruiting trail or anywhere else. It just doesn't happen. Look how difficult it was at Indiana, UNC, etc...

I personally don't see Boeheim ever coaching a game in the ACC, but if he does it will be for a short while. With all the Bernie Fine stuff, leaving the league which he was a pillar. Can't replace an icon, and Syracuse football is nothing to cheer abut at this point. Cuse is in their heyday right now. It will only get tougher for them in the next few years.

I stopped paying attention to expansion, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the football league two seasons from now will be:

Louisville
Cincy
Rutgers
UConn
S. Fla
UCF
SMU
Houston
Boise St.
SDSU
Navy
Memphis

Looks to me like Temple won't be part of the equation, but Butler or Xavier will be.

Xavier every bit as good of a choice as Temple. I'd take them in a heartbeat. Even Pitino commented about Memphis being a great move but "looks like we have one more move to make". Xavier a natural fit for the bball side of things. Would love to see that. Butler doesn't excite me, Xavier has been good for a long time now.

I was obviously kidding. There will be no ACC conference games played at the Garden unless Syracuse was blackmailed into agreeing as such as part of their conference jump.

with all due respect to Boeheim, Syracuse is peaking. They are in the heart of nowhere, with a football team that has been mediocre for much longer than SJU basketball and they have moved away from there fan base. I totally agree with whoever said that after Boeheim leaves this program has problems. In the end I will miss the rivalry because of the games I grew up with (Pearl getting stuffed by Berry, etc...) but some of the colleges we are bringing in have huge upsides like Memphis, and will only make the BE stronger IMHO. I would LOVE to see Xavier brought in as that would give me to semi local teams SJU plays, doubling the chance I can make games. However, I could imagine Cinci throwing an absolute %&*# fit about having another BE team less than 30 minutes away.

Syracuse football averages under 30K fans at their football games. In addition, they stink. Without Boeheim and Mike Hopkins at the helm, they will struggle to maintain any sort of identity down south. I too love Xavier. The rivalry with Cincy would be great for the league actually...

Blogger "fFrank the Tank" is reporting that Louisville may be bolting the Big East to join the Big 12.

I have followed Fran the Tank for some time and have found his to be pretty informative ( although not always accurate) . He is an attorney in Chicago.

We'll see. Thats become an assumption since we took Memphis. I don't know if it's factual. Pitino doesn't think so. I don't doubt anything anymore. Hope they stay in the big east.

You are absolutely correct. $ talks. Anywhere. But especially at the James Dolan led Garden.

Back on topic, I am thrilled with Memphis coming into the BE. As much as I don't like all this raiding of leagues, if that is the new norm, than the BE has to do what it has to do to remain competitive and the best BB league in the country. Let's get Temple now or Xavier!
