Memory Lane

Yep, and the last several games at MSG celebrating among long time dedicated friends and fans made it special. The MSG experience was beyond anyone's imagination. My only regret is that a few guys aren't here or are unable to attend games with us.

I'm still hurting from the Penn, Alabama, Georgia, DePaul, Ohio State and so many other down to the wire lousy luck losses that I am taking this year's tournament as another roll of the dice.
As I wrote yesterday , far too many traumatic NCAA games for me, was not around for the Penn game, before my time, but watched the ball roll around the hoop against Alabama on the last play of the game before not going in and we lose by 1, Georgia when we were a 1 seed was a heartbreaker 😢😢😢😢, the next year I think it was Temple’s Terrance Stansburys last second heave to send us home, Walter’s injury and our loss to Auburn when we were a 1 seed, and the horrible call against Billy Singleton playing puke which changed the game. So many horrible memories from the big Dance. And of course some great ones in 85 and 91.
The Big Dance is a crap shoot.

Since we are bringing up heartbreak memory lane, back in 1988 at Salt Lake City vs Florida. A tooted up Mad Max hits a pull up 28 footer at the buzzer to send us home. Previous possession Boo hit a clutch base line jumper to tie the game.

I recall Mullin missing a vital free throw in that Temple game.

Yes, front end of 1 and 1 leading up to the Stansbury prayer.

Not the first time. Feb 1983 at the Spectrum. SJU up one point, Mullin misses front end of 1 and 1 leading up to Pinone buzzer beater. NBC flashes a graphic that Mullln has 999 career points prior to his miss. The ultimate jinx. Cost us an outright Big East regular season title. We ended up sharing with BC and Nova.

That said, I’d taken Mullin at the line over anyone else. It happens to the best of them.

A player at Holy Cross, Richie Murphy (co-owned the Sly Fox and Casey's in Westhampton Beach and several other places, Shenanigan's too I think) had 999 points over his three year career. Legend has it he missed a foul shot at the end of his last game. There was a sign hanging in Casey's that only said 999.

Casey's also employed Matt Brust as a bouncer/doorman. Career only lasted one night because someone told Coach C. about it.

Knew the late Richie Murphy well. He was fellow Bronx guy who once scored 68 points in a grammar school game, played at All Hallows before entering Holly Cross and the “legend” was true re 999 points.

There was a place in Long Beach about a block from the boardwalk (can’t remember the name) that had Hank Cluess as a bouncer. It might have been after he graduated in ‘66.

Maybe not over Kevin Williams.

Maybe not over Kevin Williams.

Maybe not:) Thought he was around 90%, but see that he was only about 80%

Williams was a fan favorite back then. He stood up to Ewing at MSG. His last second shot rolled off the unlucky Nassau Coliseum rim in the last second of that Alabama loss. People today would not believe that the NCAA opening round game ten or so miles from campus was an easy ticket and maybe 3/4's full.

Mullin missing that free throw at the Spectrum was the reason I stopped wearing ties and sports jackets for a long time at games! He came in the locker room after the game and kicked the ice chest filled with drinks all over me! Ruined a new red silk tie my wife had just gotten me and my blazer! That’s when I went to sweaters and vests! But Chris is still my all time fav and a great friend!

I was at that Penn game, and also the Georgia game, so maybe it's best for everyone if I don't make any hotel reservations for the 20th to 22nd.
I was at both of those games too. On way home from Syracuse, a trooper pulled me over for speeding. He looked in the car and saw my kids and I were wearing SJU gear, and handed me back my license, saying "You folks have had a tough enough day already. Get home safely"

Well that guy did give me a speeding ticket on the way home! 😡

north, with Rick here, I think we'll be delighted at the end results this year.

I believe our defense wil go a few notches up in the NCAA Tournament.
