Did Milhaven shoot them underhand like Barry ? The way we shoot free throws , underhand might be a improvement
Have posted this before, I played at the same HS as Barry, Roselle Park in Jersey about 8 years apart and the middle school coach there, Roy Dragon, made everyone shoot fouls underhand. Barry never changed and why would he?

Not underhand and although he was only a 44% FT shooting here, he did knock them down with regularity at Nassau Community College. 😎

It’s really quite a story . Rick Barry , as I recall was one of the best jumper shooters of his era .

Yet , he chose to shoot free throws under hand .
I think he was near automatic from the foul line

Peach basket in use also?

And now, back to the Marquette game.

Great player obviously, was not necessarily considered the best player on his HS team, or even locally in his own family. His cousin, Jim Barry, lived in Elizabeth, played at St, Mary’s if I remember correctly and later starred at Georgetown. Unfortunately, he went from averaging 20+ as a sophomore down every year after that as he was hit with injuries. Still is in the GTown HOF though.
I have also shared that my older brother frequently would match shots with Barry and could compete, probably beating him 15% of the time or so. For those who remember Mal Graham from NYU, 1st round pick of the Celtics who unfortunately was discovered to have heart issues; my brother matched with him in freshmen ball, my brother played at Manhattan. Anyway, my brother loved to tell the story that he lit up Graham for 50+; the punch line being Graham scored 70+ on him. Unfortunately, my brother was a partier, read F’up, flunked out and wound up getting drafted and went to Nam. Took that to mature him to the real world.

I remember Mal Graham . NYU Coach was Lou Rossini at the time .
NYU held its own against St John’s back in those days .
Manhattan too, back then . Brian Mahoney played for Manhattan . So did his brotherCharlie after Brian .
Wonder why Louie never recruited Brian to St John’s ? Brian was a excellent player . May have been Manhattan’s All Time scoring leader .
Brian played for Louie , when he Coached the Nets .

Butch Lee was , I think the only NYC kid besides Dean Memminger who Al McGuire ever got to play at Marquette .

Butch was a excellent College player but , not NBA .
Dean played for the Knicks after Marquette . Dean the Dream .

Jim Barry played at St. Peter's Prep

Lived in Spring Lake

Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago

Great guy !!!

OK since I moved stuff to this thread for housekeeping purposes, it also provides me with an opportunity to answer a question a guy on the train asked me last night:

Guys LMF hated: Omar Cook. Reggie Jessie. Zendon Hamilton. DeAngelo Harrison (first two years or so). Jakarr Sampson.

Guys LMF loved: Charles Minlend, Justin Simon, Sir Dom. Boo Harvey. Marcus Hatten. Ty Grant.

Guys LMF had sneaky affection for that probably didn't deserve it: Donald Emmanuel. Phil Greene. Eugene Lawrence. Dylan Wusu. Matt Brust.

Guys it was a privilege to watch play: Sealy, followed by Mullin and Artest, followed by The Truth.

Definitely forgetting some, just an off-the-top-of-my-head list. Curious who others have in those categories (or others)

Mark Jackson belongs in the guys was a privilege to watch .

Lavor Postell and Bootsy Thornton belong somewhere in the most favorable category . Along with Erick Barkley .

Shamorie Ponds deserves a high accolade too. J Champagne belongs too .

Saw Donald Emanuel outside MSG shortly after his career ended. He was staring and taking in the nostalgia. I’d bet he could give the team a damn good talk about taking it all in now.

Sampson would have been a treat with Pitino but he was tough to take with Lavin.
