McGriff Redshirting - Shoulder Surgery

Eek. Same thing happened Brian Antoine at Villanova.

Wonder if he ever plays for us.

J Cole and the lacrosse player may get more minutes than any expected.

Yeah, ummm...he's an obvious transfer candidate (and probably was even if healthy)

Wish John M. a successful surgery, a speedy recovery and all the best going forward.

I wish him the best and a quick and full return to health.
Does this fall under the 15 minutes of what the hell?

Well our expectations for this season take another hit. Need all the depth we can get.

I have nothing against this kid, and wish him the best. However, unless we suffer so many injuries that we can't field a 5-on-5 team, I'm taking the "at least it's not Heron or LJ" route, when something like this occurs, for the time being.

Injured!

Really tough break for the kid. Any surgery is no joke. Wishing him all the best with surgery and for a speedy and full recovery.

So he’s going to burn a red shirt year and then transfer? No clue bro

Heart goes out to the kid...seems like a really good guy. I hope he recovers 100%. That being said, is there any explanation for the obviously massive increase in injuries from major college sports to the NBA, NFL, MLB? Comparing the amount of injuries in 2019 in those leagues to say the late 90's or early 00's seems night and day. I remember NFL teams having 1 starting RB that carried the load for each team for most of my childhood...and most of them were healthy. In baseball, big time pitchers stuck around longer and they weren't getting surgery every season. It's just odd to see such a massive increase in a relatively short period of time. I know there's the argument that players are running faster, hitting harder, jumping higher, etc. but not sure that explains much of it IMO.

My own personal opinion in some sports (pro particularly) is that the training regimen today creates muscles, tendons, etc. that are too tight and too subject to rupture and other injury. I guess the strength allows them to run faster, jump higher, hit the ball further etc., but I think it also stresses their muscles, joints etc. to the point that injuries are more susceptible. I am not a doctor, but I too perceive what you've noted, and also note that the star athletes of decades ago did not have the same mass or muscle tone as these guys. The pitchers have the added factor of max effort on almost every pitch, the plethora of breaking balls that contort the arm etc.

It's actually not that uncommon anymore for player to redshirt their first year then transfer. We just had a guy at Arkansas do that. He went to JUCO this year so he could play immediately, then he'll transfer back up to D1 with 3 years of eligibility remaining. I see players on other teams do this as well even for non-injury related redshirts, sometimes it just doesn't work out, and with the NCAA being more relaxed with players transfer, giving waivers, and the option to go JUCO then go back up to D1, it's probably going to start becoming even more common.

And I'm not saying that's what will happen with McGriff, I hope he has a speedy recover and does well here, he looks like the type of kid that could be an impact pg his junior/senior year.

I mean there's like 800 transfers a year now, but yeah no chance a guy having shoulder surgery who is also likely to be recruited over transfers, none at all. Next year he'll be coming off injury and looking up at Posh, Cole, Dunn, Williams (assuming he's still here) and i'm sure at least 1 more incoming guard who can handle, and recruiting is only going to get stronger from here on out. Plus in this waiver climate i'm sure he'll be able to transfer and play right away after missing this season. I don't love the constant the roster turnover but that is today's college basketball.
