Max Hooper

Not looking for Max to be a savior, just a threat. Anybody remember Harold Jenson? He helped Villanova a lot. That's the vision I have of Hooper. Spot shooter. Run to an open space on the floor. If we don't get him the ball immediately, run him through screens to a spot where he can do some damage and let him shoot it. Does the coaching staff know how to get that done? They have to run something to get him open. Same thing with a few guys. Sanchez, for example, has a lot of talent on the offensive end. He's not presenting himself as a threat to the defense and he can be.

Harold Jensen was a starter, a solid contributor all around, one of the best Villanova players in their history, and I believe he had his jersey retired.

In 86-87 he averaged 15.9 pts, 85% from the FT line, and shot 46% from the field. he didn't play much freshman year but still averaged 8.9 points, shot 46% from the field, and 83% from the FT line for his career, and 38% from three the only year they had it in his career.. I also believe he is a very bright and successful in his career who has been very generous contributing to Nova. Not a fair comparison.

Somehow Jensen did to GTown what Mullin couldn't.

Yea, because they ganged up on Mullin and Berry and challenged anyone else to beat them. They couldn't. Nova just matched up so damned well against Georgetown it wasn't a freakish win, although they played a perfect game, probably the best in NCAA history championship.

Shot 80% which they had too and Jensen went 10 for 10. Massimino devised a perfect plan that worked while Looie had no answers.
Massimino also got rich over it.
When do you ever think you will see 3 Catholic teams in the Final Four again? Now that is a true miracle.

No joke. To think my friends (about 20 of us) went home after St John's lost, not wishing to see Georgetown win another championship. We missed the greatest game in history perhaps, and had a ticket for it.

Interesting in that Georgetown has Harrison number in what 5 games he hasn't averaged 10 points.
You would think our coaching staff would have a solution by now.

Rollie, at age 79, is still coaching college basketball
He is the head coach of Northwood University, a small NAIA school, in West Palm Beach
He is the first (and only) coach in school history and has led his team to the national tournament several times

Harold Jensen was an excellent all around player
Hooper is a one trick pony
They are not similar players

Personally, I think we are overdoing the Max thing. Can he shoot? Yes? Can he shoot the lights out of the basket in the dark, in the freezing cold, with his pajamas on, with boxing gloves on? No. A deadeye shooter with somewhat limited athletic skills in the Big East has to come in ready to play, and after a couple of touches, be ready to drill shots. If he doesn't make open threes, he's a liability to have on the court - not a rebounder, a great defender, a jumper, or speedster. These guys no what they are getting into. Sharpshooters often get just one shot to hit their mark, and in essence when either of these guys begin making shots with regularity, they will stay in the game.

I don't agree at all. I mean we have had such success with our athletic rebounders, defenders, jumpers, and speedsters. This is basketball not track and field. A shooter HAS to know he will not be taken out if he misses one or two, that is coachiing 101. I am really tired of these inane posts lauding athleticism when we have one of the most athletic teams in the country yet one of the poorest basketball teams. I DON'T KNOW if Hooper can play but I see NO reason in the world we shouldn't find out. I DO KNOW the current team we put on the court for the majority of the game can't play winning basketball.

+1000

This team can't shoot, so why give our one shooter only one shot before pulling him? Makes no sense to me.

The coaching staff should have a solution to his shooting 1-12? LOL! He is not a shooter! He has a scorers mentality and thinks he has to score even when it is a bad shot that will be the equivalent of a turnover. In year 3 he still does not know the difference. You do with him what you do with Branch....sit him and gamble with shooters. That is what the M & M guys were brought in to do......well, I guess in the end...it is coaching or the coaches knowing when to sit or play players. We must have the crappiest practices of any Big East team when we are reduced to starting walk ons! At schools like Kansas or UNC you send players a message by recruiting a ranked player at the same position. Lavin gives our guys a union card and waits for them to retire. That is why you recruit a stud every year. That is how you keep players working for their room and board and not skipping recruiting for a year.

I understand your point BUT the guy has been given multiple chances to prove he belongs on the floor, and except for garbage time, hasn't connected on any shots. Funny, that in garbage time, he has had no problem on a couple of occasions getting his stroke going quickly. I'd like to see game logs, but it isn't as though he was yanked after 2 missed shots. He has been getting 4-5 minute stretches, which is all a sub is going to get until he proves he belongs on the floor. If Max isn't scoring with regularity, there are better ballplayers than him. So, whether we agree or not, a guy like that has to earn major minutes by being able to come in and nail shots almost from the get go. Great shooters can do that.

I don't think he has played enough to judge but has been much better than you are saying. He shot 5-8 against Penn State in 26 Minutes and 2-4 in 19 minutes against Georgia Tech. He missed one shot against Wisconsin in five minutes and did not take a shot in four minutes against Syracuse. He shot an ok 7-20(good for this team) in the other 46 minutes he played. In total he has shot 14-32(44%) in 117 minutes 0r about 15 points(third on the team) for every 40 minutes he has been on the court(he made two three throws). I agree he does little else but shoot threes but maybe we need that. He only turned the ball over once this season.

here is no hope's 2 cents on this topic... this kid should have never come to sju.. sju as lavin has tried to build them as a up and down cant shoot run low bb iq team.. this kid is a shooter not a greyhound athlete who cant shoot and has no basketball iq.. we have now built a team of athletes who for the most part never learned how to play basketball but get by on pure athletic ability. Our coaching staff wants the team this way. we do not run offense we just stand around go one on one throw up bad shots and try to go get the rebound,, we have zero ball movement and we do not help each other get off quality shots we have a bunch of guys who want shots... we do not have a strong enough coach who can control his players like some of the bigger name coaches. we have a coach who is hollywood and can recruit bigger players but will not control them or develop them.. Is this better than Norm yes.. is this good enough to win noooooooo. you do not see big name coaches and we all know who they are stand for this. they have a system and even top 25 players play withing this system.. Is this kid a star no is he a 10 minute player maybe is he a top class shooter maybe .. but you can bet that at the winning programs if you can shoot the 3 and compete and you are given a free ride they would find a way to use your skills (esp on a team that cant shoot or score).. This kid should have looked at the system looked at the team and said how the heck will I ever fit in here. Lavin should also not bring in kids who do not fit what he wants to do and if you watch this team you know they do not want to set pick or run sets .. they do not want to play that kind of basketball , they want to go up and down the court and just freelance.. does that system win ,,, yes if you can recruit enough top 25 or 50 players and get a few super stars.. we do not have that and I do not think top 25 talent want to play in a system like that ...

Hopey its really great to see you posting again. It's been too long.
How old is Lil Hope now? We gotta get Lavin out to see him.

have multiple lil hopes now and all will be to high recruits for lavin. they are already playing up 3 grades and killing and they will be 6 8 or better and shooting the 3 from down town....... the local recruiters are banging the texts out night and day lol.... so now with them keeping me busy my posting has been to rare,, but to have such high hopes as we have this year and see this team look lost and see no progress it kills us fanatics..... and NO HOPE would like to wish all of us SJU fans a happy and healthy new year and we will see everyone in the big dance!
