Matt Doherty

Beast, you are certainly right about coaches ways back in the day, and although not as commonplace, some of this stuff still goes on to a lesser degree. Matt was fiery for sure, but Boeheim, Huggins and Coach K sure look fiery when a kid messes up. Mark Few for that matter too. Even Dave L. just the other night in the DeP/SJU game did it.

Jones was playing in his last College Game and the injury was a severe one . He was prone on the Court . Huggins rushed to him immediately , got down on his hands and knees and cradled Jones in his arms and hugged him for several minutes . All the time , talking to Jones, telling him he was a great Player and Person , what he meant to the team , etc . It's something I never forgot . Of course , often times Huggy never even had to yell at a kid . He gave him a look that probably was more devastating than any words he could say .

Beast , just a point of clarification , my comments earlier were more to the issue of Kevin White seemingly in love with extraordinary long Contracts for Weis and the 10 year offer to DOH as a rebuttal to his NCarolina offer . To be blunt , it appeared to me to be ridiculous for any AD to offer any Coach a 10 year Contract worth Millioms of dollars . The implied criticism is directed at White who arguably , was a Disaster at ND for hiring Weis and Wilingham . The offering of a 10 year contract to DOH was just one of White's blunders .  Weis was a failure every place he went after ND but , was still collecting Millions from the Irish . It still rankles the ND faithful . From what I hear .  As for DOH , he got other Coaching jobs after NCarolina but , never duplicated his 1 year success at ND .  As for Angry Coaches in College or elsewhere , many of the most successful were brutal to their Players and not always physically abusive but , verbally as well . But, many in that category are revered by those who played for them as you mentioned . Ultimately , who 's to say what the verdict is ?
In any discussion of Doherty, you have to consider that the SMU gig did not work out well.   Larry Brown and Tim Jankovich certainly did better, and other before him had more success.    The bottom line is that the only thing that really matters to schools and fans is winning.   If you lose, that behavior is intolerable, but when you won, amost always totally acceptable (exception Myles Brand, who is just about universally hated by Indiana fans for destroying Indiana basketball by firing Knight)

Wow after reading the queens chronicle article makes me even more angry at our former St John's President.

Pretty sure the Brown era at SMU was filled with rampant cheating.

Cheating in college basketball has been proven to be the most sure fire way to win.

Slyfoxx, when Huggins hugged the player on the floor while consoling him, Huggins had tears in his eyes. From that moment on, I becamse a Huggins fan.

There's a sentiment expressed by Bobby Knight that goes something like this.  " Any one of the players I've ever coached can call me at any time of the day, morning noon or night, and ask anything of me and I will be there for them after they leave here.   But while they are here, they are not my friends.   I'm the coach, they are the players, and they will do it my way."

I get that.
