Matt A Pursuing Transfers

I agree Happy that you can't have your foundation built on transfers. But if your lead recruiter is Slice who is getting us in the door with guys we'd otherwise have no shot at. I don't have a problem with the 2nd assistant being a guy who can grab transfers. Could be a nice compliment to one another if Slice stays.

agree and seems Matt fares well in the non transfer market too

I very much respect the opinion of Happy but I don't have as much of a problem that Matt A specializes in procuring transfers. I do however, have a big problem with his "unfollow" act on Twitter. Kills all suspense and it's petulant IMHO.

If Slice stays and can compliment what Matt A brings on the transfer market then we can start to really see a blueprint. Very big IF at this point.

I take a different position on the Twitter thing. I can see why you would follow a kid you are recruiting. It allows unlimited contact with the kid and is an effective recruiting tool these days. I can also understand why you would unfollow a kid that commits to another program. The same way you wouldn't pick up the phone and call a kid once he commits elsewhere, it is probably wise to end communication via Twitter as well. It is more practicality than petulance.

I agree. I think it's awesome that Matt does that as well as the Q&A sessions. He keeps fans in the loop without saying things outright. Not many people do that. I appreciate Matt and all he does.

It's 100% practical. I would never expect him to follow the kid once he has committed to another school. But he unfortunately does it before anything is made public. Could be nitpicking but it would seem less sour grapes to me if he waited just a day or two.

Rest assured weeks before a kid announces his intention to transfer his handler, AAU coach, etc reach out to recruiters at other schools under radar. That is why when release from the school is given you often see a quick decision to go to a specific location. Just the world of college basketball.

Stating the obvious, Slice & Matt are so valuable because of their vast network of contacts.

To imply that Matt specializes in transfers, is doing him a great disservice. Matt convinced Marcus Lovett to come here and then also brought in Kassoum Yawke. In the present class, Matt has gotten commitments from Shamorie Ponds and Richard Freudenberg.
Coaches recruit for need and last year since we did not have much returning, we were scrambling to just fill out a roster in a couple of months. Slice and Matt are primarily responsible for recruiting and we should wish the best for both of them while they are here.

Mullin inherited "an Expantion team" . Transfers are particularly important to balance rosters and add experience. Unless the recruits are 5stars, don't want a roster made up of fr. and so.s. Also the earlier we start winning , the better it will be for recruiting. Matt has done a great job. Unless a grad transfer, he will have to sit a year. This enables the player to develop chemistry w the team before playing in a game and gives them an extra year for development.

To this point has Slice brought in a recruit or is it imminent that he will soon?

Ultimately, I would like to see transfers supplement our efforts to the tune of one or less per year. That said, to accelerate the rebuild, it is probably smart to entertain more at this time. Slice will have much more success with the 5-star types once we are winning and creating some real buzz.

Our greatest NBA alum before Chris was a transfer from Boston College.

One of our best backcourts was made up of guys who began their careers at Hawaii and Notre Dame.

And some of our best teams had solid role players in Jeff Allen (Rutgers) and Lamont Middleton (Hartford).

Lou feasted on transfers. And yes for every Reggie Carter, there was a Curtis Redding. But there's nothing wrong or lazy in getting guys to transfer in.

Great teams grow together and transfers even though part of the game is a lot riskier than putting in the work to build a newcleus. Throwing shit against the wall works sometimes. Keeping a coach like Slice is important. He has built relationships across the country and most importantly in the tri state area that 100% will pay off if people show a little patience. He is trying to convince 5 star kids to come to this shit box of a program right now. That is the truth despite what others choose to believe. Hopefully this changes but continuity is key.

Paul Berwanger BC. Competed with another 7 footer for PT Tom Weedock. The twin towers they were not.

I don't believe Matt will make a habit of going after transfers, and that he is doing it now only to help balance out the scholarship situation. All in all, I believe we are making a mountain out of a mole hill because we are always going to go after the best talent we can get, with Slice and Matt that should be pretty good, once we balance out the scholis.
