When you publicly accept a new position aren't you in effect quitting your last job? How do you out someone who quit on leave? Just seems odd to me.

I think SJU should bring in Masiello as an assistant coach and have him work on his degree for the next 2 years. If by that time Lavin has not reached his potential then promote Masiello to HC. However, if Lavin has come through and SJU is a perennial tournament team then Masiello will be in a great position to take a HC job elsewhere.
I love the concept. But a guy like Lavin is never, never going to hire someone who is capable of replacing him. Especially when he is on the ropes, as he is now.
That's all Lavin would want is to have his possible successor on staff.. Lavin needs someone like Dunlap, somebody who cant recruit ,but is an XO guru.I think SJU should bring in Masiello as an assistant coach and have him work on his degree for the next 2 years. Disagree. He falsified his credentials to get a HC job. Manhattan now knows he is looking to bolt and will do so at the next opportunity. So why let a guy coach who clearly is going to leave as soon as a better deal comes along.

I don't know the details about the falsification. Perhaps it was just an assistant who did up his resume and made an assumption. Perhaps he never saw the Manhattan website. When you are in a leadership position, there are some people that delegate these types of things 100% and a lot of business is done at high levels based upon people and relationships rather than details.
OTOH a potentially good situation for Manhattan which is one of the premier stepping stone jobs. They can keep a coach who will likely never be poached in the near future if ever and if they don't treat him like they have their foot on his throat, maybe he'll treat them honorably in return.
He pretty much has three immediate options with futures in big time sports: 1) Stay at Man (if they keep him.) He could make a big name for himself at a small program which still could mean an annual NCAA trip. 2) Complete his degree and go through a charade of public remorse hoping that some program will want him enough a few years down the line to play along. Some high profile people have gone through bigger humiliations and came out ahead. 3) Get an NBA job and try working his way up. Nobody in the NBA would give a fig about his degree.

Who told you Lavin is on the ropes? Unless you're high up in administration or the AD himself, your premise is based on fan dissatisfaction and not in reality.
Paul, any head coach of a D1 school knows a bachelor's degree is required for any major job. It's a bit of a stretch to think Masiello didn't know this. Many people falsify resumes in order to get a job - and I know some very prominent SJU alums who have done just that earlier in their careers. He probably didn't anticipate that there would be backround checks, so he stuck in there and Manhattan never checked. In the NBA it isn't a requirement at all, so of course it wouldn't matter. It's not a major transgression, and certainly does not affect on court performance, but I know a local D2 college HC who lost his job because the school implemented such a policy about 5 years ago.
The article isn't clear as to who released this information publicly. Manhattan could have become aware, and then told Masiello that he quietly would take undergrad courses, even at another school in the summers to earn his degree. It would be interesting to find out who released the information, and why.

I didn't know it was an NCAA requirement for a coach to have a bachelor's degree. I assumed that it was up to the individual school.

You’re right, “on the ropes” was too strong a term. Although it's not just fan dissatisfaction - a major media outlet (NY Post) wrote a story questioning whether he is the right guy and that is a radical departure from the last couple of years. But I should have said something along the lines of “losing leverage” – I don’t think there is any doubt about that in light of the BE/NIT performances and lack of recruits for 2014. I would be surprised if the SJU admin doesn’t at least play some hardball with the terms of his contract extension.

There is no question that this season was a major disappointment. You are aware that Baylor was in a worse hole than St. Johns, getting off to a 2-8 start. Our team had multiple opportunities to secure a bid, and each time squandered that opportunity. The major frustration is that with all those chances and failures, they still came up just short - in many games just one or two key possessions. Having said that, there isn't any evidence that the school will be starting over any time soon by dismissing Lavin - whether or not fans wants him gone or not.

From NYP, Steve Masiello’s future could be determined by Friday:
"According to one source, Masiello believed he had graduated — having attended the school from 1996-2000, as a walk-on with the Wildcats — with the current predicament stemming from a paperwork problem involving two online classes and an independent study course, which Masiello failed to properly submit as a senior. Masiello was expected to be in contact with the University of Kentucky registrar’s office on Thursday."
