Marquette, Wed. Feb. 1, 7pm, FS2/570AM

Had a great time and really enjoyed attending this game. Our guys were great. Prayers for Monte's mom and SJU85's dad. Late arriving crowd but enthusiastic. Let's win 2-3 more regular season BE games and maybe one or two more in the BE T and we can point to real progress to potential recruits.

A key going forward IMO

Chris Mullin on defensive pressure: "I think we're getting more comfortable with that as we move along." #sjubb

If you are tight on a guy defensively it makes it easier to throw your body into him and box out. Hopefully it helps out the rebounding too.

Great & 'happy' posts above, nice to read.
I do not know about 2-3 more BE wins Bama but great tonight! I did not expect a W nor the way we did it!!
Bring back LIU and Del State :)

To me the key to tonight was both Bashir and Kassoum reading this board with Paultzman saying it is looking good with Walker and Monte saying he could play 20 minutes a game next season. They both got frightened to death of Walkers imminent commitment and had great games as they are fearful as upperclassmen to loose pt to a freshman.
Great win by the team and on to the next, game by game. Congrats to the team, coaching staff and suffering fans. Hope we had some recruits at the game.

Were there recruits at the game anyone?
Thanks!

Alternate Facts! :)

Glad to see so many of you have come in from the ledge.

The fact remains that this team is (1) young (2) undersized up front and (3) lacking in quality depth. Add to that a coaching staff that is learning on the job and you have to temper your expectations.

However they are doing exactly what they need to be doing, which is making progress every game. The keys last night (in addition to effort) were (1) closing out the first half and taking a small lead to a decent one; (2) opening the 2nd half by extending the lead, not giving it back; and (3) withstanding the run and closing out the game. Very important signs that the group is learning how to win.

On the coaching front it was good to see a clear plan for how to attack the zone, which was well-executed. Mullin was too slow to call the timeout against the Marquette 2nd half run. You could see that coming a mile away, but by the time he called it i think it had gone from 17 to 9. Too slow. However he did stop the bleeding and they closed out the game well from that point.

I think we turned Marquette over 17 times after turning X over 19 times. If this continues then at least for this season that may become a hallmark of our D along with the blocked shots. Which still isn't a substitute for actually good D, but it's better than nothing.

Next key is to compete against Nova. Losing by 12 is fine, losing by 24 would be a step back. After that we have to find a way to beat Seton Delgado at home, which I think we will.

There were a lot of tickets given away to NYPD, FDNY, EMT. someone on the LIRR told me on the way home they received 12 free tickets to the game.
They typically do this one time a year at MSG to the game where they expect the lowest turn out.

Thought it was a great game, I am really impressed with the sets on offense mullin is setting up. I am happy to see the progress the coaching staff is making and Mullin looks a lot more comfortable coaching than he did earlier in the year and last season.

The hope he improves even more when he gets more guard depth as a couple of the turnovers Ellison and Lovett made last night should have led to them being pulled. We just don't have depth besides Mussini.

Both Lovett and Ellison were pulled after mistakes. Perhaps you did not notice. If it were up to me, NYPD, FDNY and EMT would get free MSG tickets to every MSG game upon request.

I was there and watching, it was after his 3rd turnover/poor shot in the span of 2 minutes he was pulled. More depth next year I expect this to change. Numerous people in Section 118 were discussing why it took so long.

And I agree first responders should have a free ticket to any game we play at MSG.

Marquette is a good matchup for us, not taking anything away from victory. They don't react to defensive pressure well, poorly defend, turn ball over & live and die on threes. I can't remember any other game where we got so many uncontested lay ups, real gold. A win there is not out of the question. With two road wins already, getting another would be a real plus considering degree of difficulty for a youthful bunch.

There were 11 on Sunday, so I don't think so.

I don't have as sharp a recall of many of our wins as some of you do. It's mostly because, in the glory days, we'd be ho-humming it for 3/4 of the game, dominate the last 6-8 minutes, and everyone goes home satisfied.

Last night Owens played the most productive 0 point game you will see. Seemed to challenge every shot, rebounded, but picked up 3 of his 4 fouls far from the basket. Mullin oaxed him in at about the 6 minute mark, and I thought he would squeeze him in and out of the lineup to have him around at game end. Owens played smart the rest of the way, and not sure if he even came out at all. BIG game and some thunderous swats.

Ponds and Lovett put on a magic show taking the ball to the hoop with lots of schoolyard flair, finding daylight and baskets again and again.

3 point shooting was above 50% for much of the game, but faltered down stretch. Only criticism is that guys like Ahmed and Ellison have no sense of clock management when a double digit lead and under 4 minutes calls for a longer possession, not a 3 point bomb. Both those guys played very well overall, and props to Andrew2, Ellison plays hard nosed on ball defense. Ahmed played the important 3rd best offensive player role really well, which is what any good team needs.

The entire team raised their game defensively, and our guards picked Marquette's pockets a few times near midcourt.

I've largely stayed out of the Yakwe threads because I just thought there was more than the's shown all year, and even in his horrible games so far, to me did a few nice things each time out even if overall played poorly. He was an absolute beast in the 1st half, and played with an incredible level of confidence. I guess I'd give credit to the coaches for not giving up on him and continue to show him they had confidence.

Mussini hit a couple of bombs but also insisted on driving into traffic in the second half for a very predictable outcome. Mullin yanked him right away, and stopped him to talk for a few seconds before sitting him down. Earlier this year that part of Mullin's game was absent, talking to players before and after substitutions

No doubt about it. Satisfying win. The team is learning where their bread and butter is (Ponds and Lovett), and as soon as they really take notice, the other guys will find they are getting a lot more open looks as teams key on those 2.

Yes! And Cl '72 include...
school kids - we used to get them with our
"G O" school cards or something like that!

In the second half we went with a lineup that included a combination of three actual forwards (between Ahmed, Owens, Williams, Yakwe) and we got more offensive rebounds than I can remember all year. Not a coincidence. I'm hoping to see a lot more of this against Georgetown and Seton Hall.

Obviously a lot easier to do this when Yakwe gives some offense.

Big part of win was aggressively taking it to hoop & getting Marquette on their heels. LoVett,

Ponds & Ahmed brought physicality to table & M'Q could not handle it.

Team needs to go 2-5 the rest of the way to get to 7-11. Won't be easy - hope we don't obviously, but wouldn't be surprised if we go 1-5 over next 6 and it comes down to Providence at home - but the fact that they are in this position is one of the best compliments I can give them.

They (players and staff) are improving materially. Given some of the punches they've taken this year it is really a credit to all of them that they've stayed stuck in on this season.

If you don't have bigger guards that can handle Ponds and Lovett are already capable of being immensely disruptive defensively. Their defensive pressure and 7 combined steals were big part of game last night. If they're still together imagine they'll adjust and be better prepared to do this more consistently against better guards/teams next year. A few buddies who saw them live for first time last night commented that their quickness is just astonishing in person.

Adding Simon's length/range defensively we'll probably have a chance to turn what has been a defined weakness this year in perimeter defense into a strength in just 1 year. Big part of what gives me optimism for this group. They are starting to play more balanced/complete and win games but don't think they are approaching limits where they are just trying to refine the last 10% of what they are capable of. Instead there are still some big swaths of the game where the area for improvement is considerable and think we are seeing more and more the potential that is there to address those areas and quickly.

Just got back from the game. Great night. Not a huge crowd but we made a lot of noise because the players gave us a reason to.

You see how much easier it is to win when you get a little bit of contribution on offense from a big man. Good for Kassoum.

Funny, 14000 + and we were very loud. Mostly SJU fans as I didn't hear any Marquette cheers.

My youth league gets 200 tickets to one game a season in the second deck. Having a decent amount of people in the second deck makes the crowd look much bigger from on the court and I think pumps up the players. So keep the giveaways coming. Not sure about 14,000 fans but the crowd was so much better then the Xavier game. I sit mid court and my row was almost empty for the X game and the few people around me seemed disinterested. Last night all of the rows around me where packed and there were a lot of younger people who seemed to be happy to be there and were rooting hard along with me.
