Give Lavin credit for taking the SJU administration out of the dark ages in hiring a head coach. Prior to Lavin SJU hired assistant coaches or mid major coaches. They felt with NYC as a recruiting base and MSG as home court it was unnecessary to pay big bucks for a coach.
This plan worked well for many years but with colleges building major arenas, more and more games being televised and other cities producing top recruits SJU slipped. With the collapse of the Big East it was looking possible that SJU was falling to mid major status. Because of this Lavin was able to secure a salary comparable to his position.
With this new president in control and the hiring of Mullin and his assistants it appears things have changed.
It's all Father Harringtons fault. The new president has been to more games than Mike Maher.
