Marc-Antoine Bourgault / Sun. N.Y. Post

Marco Polo should have been in late for a Hail Mary attempt at a comeback but he should not have started both halves instead of Obekpa. Marco hurt us more than helped us today, had a bad game during his limited minutes just like Sampson and D'Lo. I hope this was his last start although he can help the team if used at the right times.

Disagree he should start and see more mins We have only one deep threat

Understood about the deep threat, although D'Lo is certainly a deep threat when he is on. However, what does Marco bring to the table besides shooting inconsistently from 3 point range? It is more about defense than offense in this league, and Obekpa is playing like one of the top 5 defensive bigs in the entire country. There is no comparison between him and Marco when it comes to who is more important to the team.

Great game from Bourgault. He's really improved. Good to see that he kept working during the beginning of the season when he wasn't seeing meaningful minutes.

The one area I believe that he needs to work on is his off-the-ball defense. USF picked up on this last night and started throwing the lob over his head. He was able to break it up once, but more athletic teams will srtrneake advantage of that with him on the backside of the zone.

But again, great improvement.
.
Would like to see him move more and criss cross with the other corner he tends to park himself in the corners
Also we need to pick better and use the pick and roll more[/quo

St. John's kind of runs a zone offense, and has Marco as a floater, going from baseline to baseline. What I would like to see when he does this is the low post center setting a screen for him as he moves to the strong side. This would spring him in the corner, and I have no idea why they don't do this.

Because we have no offensive pattern against a zone or man defense - that's why.

Even when marco is not hitting the 3 he is still valuable. He spreads the floor. Plus he is a good passer and rebounder.

Wrong Jack. When you are watching from home on TV, you often lose perspective. Marco roams the baseline from end to end, which is why most of his shots are from the corner. DeAngelo often roams from wing, into the paint, and pops out again as the ball rotates. Harrison's problem is he always does this as a jog, as if he is walking through a play in practice. Neither EVER benefits from a pick, and it looks like they dont even know how to grab an offensive player to use him as a pick on their defender.

Back to Marco. He needs to get his minutes. He opens up the floor so much that allows D'Lo or Phil more room for their shots. On an offensively challenged team that is so important. Also allows Carr and Domenic more room for 15 footers and easier access to the boards. I think he has more talent then what he has shown. Of course that works both ways. If he's not hitting we need O's boarding, outlet passing, and blocking. This team has such a small margin within which to be successful ( against the top tier teams ) that it puts more pressure on Coach and the staff to make the right moves at the tright time to maximize our chances..

Have no problem if he gets a few more minutes but my point is it should not be at the expense of Obekpa and I do not believe he should be starting especially if it means Obekpa is not. We can not start games in a hole because our best defensive player is on the bench and teams find it so easy to go inside. Watch how differently teams react when Obekpa is in the paint. Many are scared to go inside. Marco can take a few minutes from Greene, Harrison, etc. Obekpa needs to play 30 a game minimum.
