Marc-Antoine Bourgault / Sun. N.Y. Post

Willie Shaw.

I prefer calling him the Frenchman

I know you probably dodn't intend it this way, but would you call Balamou, or GG, "The Africans", or Alan Seiden, "the Jew". I think to identify someone by their ethnicity isn't the way to go in 2013.

Sounds too PC police to me...I understand your heart is in the right place, but what's the big deal? They ARE Africans...that guy IS Italian...that girl IS Asian. Saying someone's ethnicity or nationality is not racist or negative. It's a fact.

I'm not trying to be PC. I think simply because someone is from a different place, for fans to identify him primarily by something that separates him from us, especially something as superficial yet personal as ethnicity, is counterproductive.

Finding a convenient "those people" label for the "other" is more informative about the labeller than the labelee.

i know first hand that french people have no objection to being referred to as "frenchie". some on these sites refer to him as "marie antoinette" or as a collaborator. that's homophobic/racist stuff.

Berry blocked Pearl's baby jumper. Epic!

The "TRUTH"!
Speaking of Pearl, he was the fastest, slow, rotund guard to play in the Big East...ever!

Pearl Washington was anything but slow, at least in his college days and before. While his NCAA moniker was Pearl, a royal name formerly reserved for Earls, his schoolyard nickname was PacMan for his ability to zip around the court in any direction at will. Of course, what his teammates often called him was Olivehead, for a head that appeared far too small for his body.

What most of us probably forgot is how he absolutely destroyed a much slower Mark Jackson who could not stay with him. To almost all viewers, it was Washington who had the high pro upside, and you almost had to pity watching Jackson trying to stay with him. Who would have guessed that Jackson would have the long and successful career?

Washington suffered from being so quick that he never needed a jumpshot before he got to the pros. His outside shot was almost a set shot, not unlike Magic Johnsons, and less effective. When Washington got to the NBA and could no longer operate at will inside, his arsenal seemed anemic and he was soon gone.

Pearl Washington also had some 'herky jerky' in his game. He had the moves of a shifty, running back, and could put a player on his heels before going to the basket or pulling up for a mid-range jumper. Washington's NBA career went south due to his work ethic (or, lack of). His jumper never improved (basically, as you stated) nor maintain his weight.

And then there are the Irish - and we all know what they're like.

p.s. i am an O'

Rowan is a good comparison, though he’s a little taller, right?

One of my all time favorites, Mattie Brust, a little?

Bourgault is taller than Rowan. Rowan transferred from Notre Dame I believe. Hit a couple of key jump shots against Syracuse, a game we won when Walter the Truth Berry either scored or blocked a shot - I forget which.

Brust transered from North Carolina but was he a steady jump shooter???

Had Bourgault and Harrison hit a few more 3 pointers the game would, of course, have been much closer. I did not think we could win on the road and I do not believe we van win the next road game in Kentucky. I hope we win more but as I glance at the remaining schedule, every game could be an "L" and perhaps half could be a "W".

I'd be happy with a run into the NIT. Didn't the team with Malik Sealy and Jason Williams win it all. I believe they started with a road win against Mississippi.

all the best

all the best

Brust was never a steady jumpshooter I saw him play at Stj's but he was a
fierce defender at 6'5 built like a tight end.
Ron Rowan was a very good Shooter that was not utilized enough by Louie
ag. Gt Hoyas box & one in 1985
If Louie went w 6'3 Jax over 5'11 moses & playing Rowan at Shootin guard & movin Mullin to small forward w Berry at power Big Bill at center the Johnnys would have beaten the hoyas. Both Wille Glass & mike Moses were not great shooters & Jax handeled the Hoyas press w ease
The 1st game at the cap center we beat the Hoyas who were w out Michael Graham a real dirty power forward that killed us on the boards.

Agree with everything you wrote. He had an unreal ability to freeze a defender in the lane, especially a monster center like Ewing, and shoot and score over him, something 7 footers failed to do.

Marco played a ++ game tonight. he stuck open shots, played good D, and moves the ball. He even dunked in the closing moments. He always puts a body on a man to box out, and grabs a few rebounds. I am appreciating his game more and more.

He also drives and kicks frequently - most guys drive and go into no man's land where they force a shot. Really nice basketball player even if he is from - you know where.

Hes my new favorite player and he is the smartest player we have. Another wing scorer was absolutely huge for this team. Now if only we could get jamal back.

He is playing with confidence. I said it when he first 'debuted' vs Gtown that prior to that he was playing scared like first mistake and he would be yanked. Which was often the case. Unfortunately it took an injury for him to get extended minutes, get a comfort level, and show what he can bring to the table.

As others have said looking forward to him Jamal and Dee in there at the same time.

Great game from Bourgault. He's really improved. Good to see that he kept working during the beginning of the season when he wasn't seeing meaningful minutes.

The one area I believe that he needs to work on is his off-the-ball defense. USF picked up on this last night and started throwing the lob over his head. He was able to break it up once, but more athletic teams will take advantage of that with him on the backside of the zone.

But again, great improvement.

Are we really that lazy that we can just call him Marc-Antoine? yes it has 3 syllables not like your typical american joe or steve or john. This is like going back to ellis island... oh wait your native name is to hard to pronounce, ok it sounds like tomato to me so that's what I'm going to call you.

St. John's being such a diverse school must we really Americanize everything!?

I believe its been said he prefers to be called Marco in person but referred to by his full name in print and articles.

Loved seeing him move without the ball more and be more aggressive. I'd like to see him tighten up his passing, but playing in the big east for the first time will expose anyone's shortcomings. Good game by Marco!

Also, CO although the numbers were not huge seemed to be rebounding much better/more aggressively. Just goes to show you what time and hardwork will do for first year guys.

Also Sir Dom had a HUGE game, I didn't want to leave him out of my compliment parade!

Would like to see him move more and criss cross with the other corner he tends to park himself in the corners
Also we need to pick better and use the pick and roll more

St. John's kind of runs a zone offense, and has Marco as a floater, going from baseline to baseline. What I would like to see when he does this is the low post center setting a screen for him as he moves to the strong side. This would spring him in the corner, and I have no idea why they don't do this.

Since when is Marco and "American" nickname? I wasn't aware that there were any "American" names. In fact, Mark is more commonly used in the US, primarily because it is the commonly used name of the apostle credited with writing the first Gospel. It's hardly more American than Marc, and certainly neither are American, nor is Marco.

The MSG PA announces him as Marco Borgault. But it was nice getting improperly corrected by a guy whose avatar is Borat.

On the negative side it looked like both Lavin and Marc-Antoine's teammates today decided he wasn't up to competing against Pitt. He ride the bench a lot, and when in, mostly watched Phil Greene and Harrison miss from afar.

I found the lack of playing time coinciding with the team's lack of offense perplexing.
Was Lavin asleep at the wheel here? It would also be nice if our point guard Green would find him
once in awhile instead of passing to Harrison or dribbling away 30 seconds.

I agree with those who say playing marco late would not have made the difference but at least appear to have a clue. When we fell behind big fairly late the only chance we had was to hit some 3's so put Marco in-the other guys couldn't hit the proverbial broad side of a barn. Dlo should have been kicking for the Giants today as most of his field goal attempts sailed clear over the cross bar and right through the uprights.
