MAAC or Bust

A friend of mine who works in my office literally today ( nova guy ) we had this conversation because he roots for SJU. He said to me today " Mike I never thought I would say this but right now we are Duke " as in Nova being Duke. Just hire the right breaking coach and staff. I'm not completely "wrighting" the person off but get 2 fucking recruiters out there and someone inside tightening things up

A small mind? I am a realistic mind. Year after year this Forum talks about what we need. Face reality. We need a less competitive conference. SJU hoops will never be what it was. I do not like saying that. Heck I used to play pick at Alumni Hall with many of the players, and wish it were 1981 again--when recruits liked to come here. For better or worse, big-time NCAA hoops has changed. Big time, D1 players don't choose us. We get the "next layer" and unless you have an unbelievable basketball coach who can get them to overachieve, we do not stand a chance. I'd be all for either Hurley, but why on earth would they ever come here? ---Former 25 year season ticket holder!

You must be Baldi's cousin. Why else would you even think of the MAAC?

let me ask you this. why does the school have a basketball team ? for a school like this is it an act of benevolence or is it to make money ? how would they make money or even attempt to make money by going to a smaller conference ? what kind of tv money would we go down to ?

If you were told you had a 20% chance of walking into a bar one night ( without beer goggling ) and picking up a hot chick or a 70% chance of walking into a bar and picking up an ok chick which would you choose ?

If you left that decision to the same great minds that selected qualified coaches at St. John's over the years, I am not sure they would even pick up a chick. No Zach Brown pun intended.;)

Nothing against the guy who started it, but this is potentially the dumbest thread I’ve ever seen.

I am bad at math but I would try and pick up both of them giving me a 90% :D

As a fish in a small pond, maybe we have a chance to play in March.

Being in a one-bid conference lowers our chances.

Going to that conf, we don't get 4* recruits, and a 5* maybe every 3, 4 years, only 2 and 3*s.

Even if we got in we'd most like be one and done. Then you could argue: " well atleast we get in, even as a one and done. Now we are 0-10 and last place jokes."

True, but atleast the more talented players are coming, giving more hope to do something, one surprising year a sweet 16, or even elite8 like in Jarvis first year. In the Maac we'd need a coach like Shaka Smart when he was at VCU.

kind of right answer but you didnt explain your drinkalgebra well. You go to the first bar with the hotties and take your chances and the go to the other bar sloppy and put " dont stop believing on the jukebox " with the non-hotties :)

The primary reasons for our decline since the '03-'04 season (Jarvis/Clark)--a total record of 211 wins - 249 losses, and a woeful Big East record of 87 - 167--up to and including the current dismal seasons has been primarily two-fold--a combination of poor - inconsistent coaching and poor - inconsistent recruiting.
It's not the fact that we're a 'commuter' college, it's not the size of the school, its 'religion', or even its campus / facilities. It is our poor luck in coaches (overall) since Louie retired.
I agree that it has always been tough to recruit here because St. John's is a local 'commuter' school, with a decent campus but and an inadequate basketball arena.
Our Big East 'cachet' (being a conference member) and playing some games each year at MSG 'help' recruiting efforts--but it's a good recruiting and good fundamental X/O head coach and staff that we need to consistently make us competitive in Big East play.
We haven't had that.
There's no reason that we cannot attain that.
We must stay in the Big East. It would be folly to move down in conference. All our disadvantages would be amplified and we'd need a 'great' coach to get us into the NCAAs.
Next year should provide solid evidence on a few fronts: whether CM can recruit, whether he can win in the Big East with his recruits, and whether he can continue to bring in solid Big East caliber recruits.
Like those old Brooklyn Dodger fans--we must 'wait 'til next year' to find out.
Let's go St. John's.

See MJ I always think big. Pickup ok girl, then pickup hot one and have some real fun. Go big or go home!

BTW for some of the younger posters on here. If you ever have a chance at threesome it is best that one of the girls is clearly hotter than the other one. The less hot one has more to prove and always performs better.
Sorry College memories..... Now back to bad basketball.

And somehow you still root for St Johns when you have a Big Ten attitude :)

Much like threesomes I think my best college basketball rooting is behind me. I now have to go watch Kid Danger with my son before he goes to bed. I miss the 90's:)

Guys it’s not about the MAAC. It’s about discussing the proposition as to whether or not at some point it makes sense to leave the conference.

The dismissive obnoxious responses are just plain inappropriate.

If anyone were to tell you that 20 year’s from now our bottom dwelling had continued, I can’t imagine one poster saying they would sign up for that because we wanted to keep
The tv money.

Rather I believe most posters would say given that knowledge we should have switched conferences.

Onviously we don’t know what the next 20 year’s will bring. But I would say that if next year we find ourselves contemplating another 4 year rebuild I think the conversation would be rational.

I don’t want to leave the BE. I’ve had season tickets practically the whole span. But I’d rather win and enjoy it than be like a Jet or Met fan always grousing about what should be. I’m not a masochist.

That’s a valid difference of opinion. And that’s what makes the responses to this thread (and mine a few weeks ago) objectionable. There have been far more outlandish things said here over the years.

Not knocking your opinion but if you told me in the next 20 years we had a one out of 10 chance of ever being good in that conference or being upper echelon in a piker conference I'll take my chance on being good in the bigger one. But that's just my opinion

Well since everyone's favorite coaching candidate is in the A10 how about there? For argument's sake.

You are the "master" man! :)

I love reading everyone's comments. As an '83 grad I've been through the great and the worst of times. However, we keep doing things the same way with every new regime and expecting a different result. I learned at SVC that was a definition of insanity. The only way to change the program is to allow it to evolve from high level to mid level D1 hoops. Change the process and expect better results. A move to the MAAC would reset expectations and allow for some fun times again. Sure we could still (for old time's sake) schedule non-conf vs two big east teams per year. That gets our power ranking up anyway. The past is just that, the past. Time to evolve as a university men's basketball program, to what we really are able to be. A successful mid level program.

You might be a long time fan, but you just don't get it. If this team left for the MAAC, I am done. You are completely out of touch with the fan base. Go root for Manahatten or Iona and enjoy reading about all those un-televised games.

Can't leave the Big East, it's just not realistic. We made the tournament 3 years ago, your acting like it was 50 years ago. Lavin was a pretty good recruiter but an average coach. We just need a good coach plain and simple. It's easier said than done but it's very possible. Remember Jay Wright was coaching Hofstra before Villanova got him. Your telling me 2 million at a big east school cant get you a good coach? I'm not buying it.

Where are you going to read about them. :)
