MAAC or Bust

I love reading everyone's comments. As an '83 grad I've been through the great and the worst of times. However, we keep doing things the same way with every new regime and expecting a different result. I learned at SVC that was a definition of insanity. The only way to change the program is to allow it to evolve from high level to mid level D1 hoops. Change the process and expect better results. A move to the MAAC would reset expectations and allow for some fun times again. Sure we could still (for old time's sake) schedule non-conf vs two big east teams per year. That gets our power ranking up anyway. The past is just that, the past. Time to evolve as a university men's basketball program, to what we really are able to be. A successful mid level program.

I would rather continue to fight in the "Big Pond " than be a big fish in a little one.

Plain silly

Moving to MAAC means losing Fox TV revenue, impractical & not happening. Could join the "Troll League" & sense someone would buy season tickets. :)

See I know there is too much $ involved for this to ever happen but I love the responses from people when this is brought up. First of all the Big East as currently constituted is not the BE we all grew up with. I get we would want to keep the Gtown rivalry and let Nova beat us for old times sake. But who else would we miss? Butler? Xavier? Marquette? Yeah probably the Depaul rivalry.
Secondly over the last 15 years our Big East record is 87-167.
So basically people bringing it up shouldn't be viewed as an insult. Outside of financial considerations it is a valid discussion point.

Everyone on this site who objects to this obviously knows better, and it is a ridiculous proposition. Not.

Paultzman's comment is salient and practical, and may be the reason that moving conferences wouldn't work.

But if that's the only reason to staying the conference, then the disrespectful comments toward anyone with the temerity to have a different opinion are uncalled for.

If that's the best you can do to justify staying, then the idea of moving out is not outlandish, for basketball reasons.

But you should be honest and say that they are willing to sell out and remain bottom dwellers for the sake of the tv money. And please jettison the "that's crazy" or "blasphemy" responses.

Why would recruits come here? We wouldn't be a big name in a little pond, we'd be like every other school in a small pond. We'd lose the Garden, and statistically have less of a chance of getting to the Big Dance.

People treat us leaving the BE like someone suggested hiring Mike Jarvis to be Mullin's bench coach. Come to think of it that might not be a bad idea...........:D

STOP!  JUST STOP!
Suggesting the MAAC is an insult to a fan's intelligence!  Maybe one would have given the poster some credit if they suggested the A10 but I am sure that not a single fan that actually attends games would look forward to games in Jersey City to play St. Peters, or to Monmouth County, Loudonville, New Rochelle, Hamden, Riverdale or Lawrenceville.  I agree that we are dragging down the Big East but only because small minds have controlled the show.  Only a small mind would think the MAAC  is big.

A small mind? I am a realistic mind. Year after year this Forum talks about what we need. Face reality. We need a less competitive conference. SJU hoops will never be what it was. I do not like saying that. Heck I used to play pick at Alumni Hall with many of the players, and wish it were 1981 again--when recruits liked to come here. For better or worse, big-time NCAA hoops has changed. Big time, D1 players don't choose us. We get the "next layer" and unless you have an unbelievable basketball coach who can get them to overachieve, we do not stand a chance. I'd be all for either Hurley, but why on earth would they ever come here? ---Former 25 year season ticket holder!

let me ask you this. why does the school have a basketball team ? for a school like this is it an act of benevolence or is it to make money ? how would they make money or even attempt to make money by going to a smaller conference ? what kind of tv money would we go down to ?

If you were told you had a 20% chance of walking into a bar one night ( without beer goggling ) and picking up a hot chick or a 70% chance of walking into a bar and picking up an ok chick which would you choose ?

Recruits never just CAME here. REggie Carter transferred back home, so did Rencher. Gilroy was a holy cross guy. Wayne McKoy went to LI lutheran. Mullin came here. Berry was a plum picked after a ton of schools wanted him from San JAcinto. Almost all the kids then were second tier guys . Mark JAckson was the 3rd best guard in the city - after PEarl Washinton and Kenny Smith, who were much more sought after. Back then and until the final four we recruited only locally, and without TV coverage of every major conference, more kids stayed home - but we still lost nearly every highly sought after guy to other schools.

Root for Hofstra or Fordham if you want that level of competition. You will be one of about 500 fans at a typical game. Even then those schools can't win. What makes you think you can recruit Big East level talent at a mid major school. The talent level we recruit wont be the same because the Ponds, Lovetts, Owens, Simons, Clarks will all go to ACC, Big East, Big 10 schools. That's what makes your post ridiculous.
