Lovett

It is unfortunate that Lovett has hurt himself and is unable to play. If you look at the games we lost, including the Nova game, there is a very good chance we would have won several of those games with Lovett on the floor. We are just too thin and it is also unfortunate that Mussini left. With him at least they would have had another excellent 3 point shooter. Now we essentially only have Ponds and from the Nova defense that I witnessed they were sure to keep him from getting 3 point shots leaving him to drive to the basket. At times near the end of the game, I noticed two Nova defenders on Ponds whenever he was near the 3 point line. So we got two points and they got three each time down the floor. This is another lost season. Although I believe this team will win a few games in the BE, we will not make any post season tournament. Even if we somehow win some games in the BE tournament, I don't see any way we win as by the time we would reach the finals the thin roster of players will be exhausted. It is my gut feeling that Lovett wont be back next year. There will be the fear that he will injure himself further and ruin any possible career. Same thing occurred with Walter Berry who had hurt himself and then feared returning another year. I think that hurt him and I think it will hurt Lovett although I see Lovett playing somewhere in Europe and doing well. We are only left to say "wait until next year" but then the Brooklyn Dodger fans use to say the same thing and it didn't get them very far.

lovett isn't coming back next year and based on his dance moves he's not that injured

Yes I agree but I don't really understand, he had a chance to showcase himself and I really think this team was bound to get an invite to the Big Dance this year

When he saw 0-5 he said no point in coming back and 'damaging' his knee any further. 2-3 I bet he would be coming back.

MOOSE!!!:D

I think he said no point in coming back as soon as he sat with pops in his living room during the Christmas break.;)

Do you think he’s transferring? How can he ‘go pro’ in Turkey or anywhere on the planet, coming off a 2nd knee injury and not playing ‘somewhere’ to show that he has healed?

I knew you would miss me. Site is really tough to navigate but I'm trying.

I'd guess more than one international team at some level might be willing to take a chance..... $ may be less

look at X's Edmond Sumner.....

he got injured last January (against us and we actually won), didn't play the rest of year and still got a 2nd round draft pick.

Thanks RedStormNC. Guess we'll have 1 available 'ship' for '18/'19.

So does everyone agree he's gone after this year? I'd be shocked to see him back.

With how this was handled, assuming he's gone I won't be rooting for him going forward. Not that I will be rooting against him, just will be indifferent. I root for other players who left early like Harkless, but those players were drama free.

Weird situation that hurts every single person involved. Shame became this could've easily been avoided. He'll get some sort of a contract I'm sure, but it'll be far less than it should be.

Assuming he leaves, hoping for a quick exit.

He won't be back & staff recruiting accordingly

We should convince Quinerly's mom that the impression of St. John's is that we are way too damn cheap to pay players, so her son should be eligible to play here without too much sniffing around by the NCAA.

You allude to the Dodgers. Wait til next year. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the World Champions in 1955 of course and we SJU can finally make inroads into the NCAAs next year.

Less we forget, CM and staff inherited almost nothing in April 2015 - the kids might have been wonderful but their talents were not - so instead of making the big time in his third year - Chris Mullin will have to wait for his fourth 2018-19 (see Coach K in his early years at Duke and PJ Carlessimo in his early years at Seton Hall)

AND I very much - though like others keenly disappointed - like Chris' constructive statements after losses - his kids play hard, they are learning and with the talented additions coming will see Ws down the line.

Our current roster is gaining invaluable experience and sometimes experience "sucks" and pain tags along.

Lovett undoubtedly would have led us to a few more Ws (Seton Hall, Creighton, G'Town and Villanova games were imo potential Ws) and perhaps the NIT. As has been stated his absence has made a big negative difference. Who knows what is really going on inside that kid's life and circumstances. Such is life. We send him goodwill.

All the best and let's go St. Johns!

If you really think about the Lovett situation , there are still many unanswered questions . . And ,maybe a few of our SJU Attorneys can come up with a few that I miss .., Here goes . 1 . Medically , how bad was/ is the knee injury ? 2. Is he Medically , a candidate for Surgery ? 3. What other factors contribute to Lovett not playing ? 4. Was Mullin, the Staff , School blindsided by Lovett’s decision ? 5. Is Lovett still enrolled and attending Class? 6. Do the Team Lovett people really believe he has NBA talent , size and a knee able to play ? 7. Think Marcus is doing enough reading about Turkey, China , Israel, to reconsider his Dance moves ? Summary: Most of us enjoyed seeing Marcus play . He was a exciting and talented player and for too short a time ! On the other hand, his leaving and the way it was handled , leave the speculation amongst us, that honesty wasn’t present since the injury occurred . Final Recommrndation for the Team Lovett folks , get a grip on assessing the long term prospects of Life without Basketball , later if not sooner . Good Luck Marcus , we hardly knew ye .

Excellent post and astute analysis ! Agree 100 percent . Mullin needs more time , 1 more season at least . The depth of the fan criticism is astounding and condemning his lack of a tie or sitting on the scorers table is ridiculous . Ewing sat on the table too . I think Patrick is going to do fine as a Coach . I like the way he gets after his players . I heard him take Govan to task after taking a fall back jumper . Patrick said, “ What kind of shot was that ? You practice that shot ever ? Then , don’t shoot it in the F ing game!”

Thanks, glad this won't drag out.

i loved watching Marcus play and had huge expectations for him and Ponds for us in the backcourt this year. I penned them as #Batman&Robin !! Anyway, i would put up any amount that he will not be drafted in the first two rounds and ill even go as far as saying he will not make a NBA roster at all. If D'Angelo and DJ Kennedy can't stick on a roster, Marcus with a college basketball grade of "I" for incomplete, doesn't have a chance! Sorry Marcus, but although I loved watching you, I see you as another example of another guy I loved watching but left too early- Omar Cook.

Agree 100 percent . We all wanted to see what Ponds and Lovett could do this year . Marcus ‘s injury and him not playing was a major hit to whatever aspirations the Team had . The whole dynamic of the team and it’s on Court chemistry was disrupted . Results to date , in terms of Wins and losses reflect his absence . Surely , we would not be 0-6 in the BE . Which is why the whole truth of the Story should be forthcoming from Marcus and the University . When ?

Sly, whatever the "truth", what is done is done.
Marcus was injured. The medical staff cleared him to practice but he claimed he felt pain which no one can gauge.
As to why it played out as it did my sense is that when Marcus did not travel with the team as a "day-to-day" and requested to visit with family it was actually to decide his playing future. That is where the staff was left out of the process and the writing was on the locker room wall. Hence, a final MRI and scheduled workout with the staff. The MRI was again negative. The day before the workout the Lovett’s decided to end the charade and the father, not Marcus, announced the termination of Marcus Lovett’s college career. The St. John's press release was a CYA statement by the university.
If you think I am being too speculative someone much closer to the program had the same impression for what it's worth.

I will give Lovett the benefit of the doubt but if I was CM (which clearly I’m not) and I had solid proof I would ban him from having any contact with the team and unofficially kick him off for not being a team player. I’m sorry I can’t root for this kid if he has some alterior motives at this time aside from helping his team get some Wins. Plenty of ball left in the season and I am not writing this season off yet. There is always big east tournament to make a statement. Lovett at this stage will be playing in the Iran league.
