Louisville Gamethread

I think the most frustrating part about this situation is unless the coaching staff is able to convince Sampson and Gathers to come to St. John's next year, I'm not sure how much better this team is going to get. As most people on this board have mentioned, there aren't a ton of unsigned players out there and it is probably too late to get heavily involved with them. And I don't think I'm that far off considering it seems Lavin is out there recruiting players for the 2013 and 2014 classes.

So again, I'm hoping we're able to get Sampson and Gathers back in the fold otherwise we're gonna go into next year with basically the exact same squad. And no offense to these players, but they are not going to be able to compete with the top echelon teams under those circumstances.

I think one of those two will end up at St. John's. Not to mention, the staff is doing their due diligence out on the 2012 trail.

I'm not sure how long you've been watching college hoops, but I've been watching it for over 30 years and players can and have gotten better from one year to the next. Some of you are forgetting these guys are playing teams who generally have talent, experience and depth. We're shorthanded and very young.

If folks aren't expecting a mediocre product then you're just not being truthful with yourself.

Everytime Raf says something like "They haven't given up" or "Look how hard they're playing"... I get a visceral reaction akin to dry heaving.

me too. and when i hear the "young team thats going to get better" its like a bad acid flashback

Somebody tell me how can you shoot 2for 30 and be called talented

your right. This is a talentless group of over rated recruits.

well i'll go with over rated

Look dont get me wrong these guys are trying real hard. It is just hard to ..understand how a team as a whole can shoot so poorly Usually one guy has a hot.hand These. kids have .potential How could they have been rated so high over their. HS careers Hope coach is working as i am sure he is on recruiting to our weakness

Apparently you have never watched the game of basketball before. Teams have off nights shooting. It has nothing to do with form, or effort, or anything like that. Sometimes shots just don't fall, and there isn't anything you can do about it. It's just one of those things that happens. It happens to most teams every once in a while...

Case in point: Butler in the national championship last year. They shot 18.8% for the game! You can't sit there and say that they had no talent and were over-rated and things like that....

P.S. they will get better, don't worry and when they do the games will look like the one against Providence.

LOL The things is I believe it with this group. They (broadcasters) were still calling the group from last season "young" and stating "getting better" when they were juniors.

Fortunately, they did get better last season.

Young players get better with experience, 90% of this team has played 14 NCAA games, and with a very limited bench. Once we recruit more players and this group gets better we will be fine.

The one thing that I dont undeerstand is the slow starts. It seems we just cant gear it up in the first half. Tonite 18 first half pts and 40 in the second. Now I know when u shoot 13% not gonna score alot, but besides the Providence game this has been a continuing theme.

The one thing that I love about this team is the will not to pack it in. they play hard for 40 minutes, and with that mentality with more talent they will be winning alot more then losing. This is a fun team to watch win or lose. We are mving in the right direction, goona have to takes lumps to get to the top of the mountain.

Another long season for the Johnies in our illustrious history. Wonder how many of the current 6 recruits will transfer after this losing season? These kids ain't going to like losing. I'll be the first to applaud lavin if he is able to pull off a massive rebuild, because right now the cards are getting stacked against us no pun intended..

If nobody transfers(which I dont think they will.} If we get either Gathers or Sampson.Obekpa,Woods and a couple others well be in great shape next year. That said, we currently have 0 players who signed their LOI ,so I am a little nervous.

Really dont see that happening. These kids came here to bring back st johns basketball. they knew tht it was not going to take more then a year. With 2012 recruits and a year of experience, they will be fine next year.

Just got back from the game.... and all I can say is whay offense?

Each one of these players was a high school standout, scoring multiple points per game. With any kind of offensive concept, they have to be able to put a few more points on the scoreboard no? While I know that everyone here wants to give Dunlap/Lavin a pass based on last year, can you truly say that there was one bit of an offensive concept out there. Most of the time, once again, it was throw the ball around for several seconds and then take a desperation shot as the clock runs out.

Look, I fully understand that they are YOUNG, but they dont seem to be making any progress here. In these last two games they were NON COMPETITIVE, completely outclassed and was it not for a last minute spurt or two, would have lost by 30 plus points.

Was is interesting is that in the beginning of the season, many on this site was making fun of the Seton Hall coaching staff, wondering how a recruit would pick them over us. Well based on the fact that they completely dismantled UCONN, while we were non competitive against that same team, perhaps many on this site assessment of the Seton Hall staff was a bit pre mature.

Anyway, I cant help but feel a bit disapointed at this juncture in time as we really dont seem to be making any progress to date.

The one bright spot here may have been our defensive effort in the first half.

SH is a vet team, just lets see next year without Pope and Theodore.

Could never understand why we didnt go after Pope? They may be a vet team but they were not considered a highly talented vet team.

Seton Hall is still not a great destination...Well deserved kudos for a very good win (we had 6 just like it last year) but they are winning because of the efforts of 2 seniors who play critical positions...

That said, we are losing because we have no one beyond Harrison who can hit an outside shot...You would that through sheer volume of shots (and some luck) we would hit a few...but we seem to throw up some really bad bricks...Anyway, I am not dismayed...they are young, they are developing and will be a lot better next year...

Saw Lavin at MSG tonight. He seemed to be in good spirits

Exactly MJ...no reason to be disappointed...we will be fine

Just back from the game-

Crowd was weak, thought there would be more Louisville fans.

To me, its pretty simple. This team has 2 1/2 offensive players. Dom, Amir, GG, and Stith, have no offensive game to speak of. With only 7 players, that leaves D'Angelo, Moe, and Phil as our only real offensive threats. While Phil has shown some flashes (Providence) it seems that him being forced to play the point is hindering his scoring ability. Moe gets lost in the crowd at times and D'Angelo is a warrior, but not enough to carry this team on his back. Remember, just because a recruit is ranked in the top 100 doesn't mean he can automatically step in right away and score at will. Dom and Amir were never touted as offensive players, GG was a mystery, and the team was really depending on Nuri and Sampson to lead the scoring attack along with Moe and D'Angelo. That being said, what I do have a problem with, however, has been the coaching. Without getting into an essay-long post, Dunlap seems completely lost out there to me.

WOW! it was cold tonight on 7th Avenue!

The temp inside the Garden was even colder......for our shooters. The game was given away in the first half....again. Although the Cards are ranked 10th, they are still missing players and Siva played one of his worst games as far as I can remember.
Our kids may have come close to a cold-shooting record for a St. John's team in the first half. After the first 3 minutes and 40 seconds, we shot 2-26 for 0.07%. That is not a typo folks! The scary part of the stat is that of the two shots we made, one was a layup and the othe a dunk by GG in the final seconds! Yes, zero made shots from beyond the backboard for 16 minutes and 19 seconds!!!!
How vulnerable was Louisville tonight for an upset (see Seton Hall and Fordham)? They were only up by 11 points at the half.
The freshmen played like freshmen tonight, except for Harrison who right now is the best player on the team as he shows up every game. Without him tonight we lose by 30+.
The combined freshmen trio of Moe, Phil and Dom shot 10% in the first half. Again, Phil could not run the show and Moe was a no-show. I give Dom and Phil a pass at most games as they were the greenest of the recruits and neither were penciled as starters. Of course with Jakarr ineligible and Nurideen going independent, both will have to suffer games like this but at no fault of their own.
Moe Harkless, on the other hand, does not get a pass. He was the jewel of the class and clearly the most talented. However, other than the Providence game, he tends to disappear for minutes at a time while D'Angelo and Gift play 40 minutes of hell. Good thing for Moe he is not playing for Jim Calhoun or he would have had a lot of FaceTime with JC in games like tonight and likely spent half the game on the bench, if not more.
We have no such luxury with any of our freshmen since they need to play...period.
Finally, props to the Hall and Fordham for big upsets tonight! The difference when a team team has a couple of talented seniors is obvious. Seton Hall is easily the best team in the Metro area right now
