Long Beach St game thread

LBS giving UT a battle. They are quick, athletic and not afraid to mix it up. I hope this goes to triple OT and they are exhausted by the time they hit NY.

I agree. I watched them beat K State and they are quick, athletic and fearless. This will be a tough game. I think if we can shut down and frustrate their guards they will revert to trying to go one on one and will take bad shots (a bit like we sometimes do) and we may be able to separate from them. But it will mean keeping our own composure, moving the ball and playing smart. I think if we do that and ramp up our D on their guards, we'll get it done. if we try to match their athleticism and revert to playing one on one, their depth could bury us.
Will be really great to get this win.

UT was able to pull away after LBS took the lead with about 12 mins to go. Longhorns beat their man to man D with good ball movement and patience.

LBS is guard heavy but Caffey was the star tonight and is deadly from outside. I expect D'Lo to give him an up close and personal "Welcome to Queens" game.

I don't foresee a problem with LBSU. They are a good match up unlike St. Mary's.
Well now I feel much better and I'm not being sarcastic (for a change). I'm all aboard the Marillac bandwagon (for the time being at least), what with it being Christmas time and all. So don't let me down Big M! :)

Of course, on any given Sunday….

But based on our play our ranking is legitimate, and on paper we're only at a disadvantage against teams that have talented size. And tougher if that size is wide. So, although 'cuse is a difficult matchup (CO played great), Waldow is even tougher for us. Smith on G'town will be a problem.

Defensively we're a nightmare for most teams. We guard like our lives depend on it, we're athletic, quick, big enough on the perimeter, and if you get a step you get to meet Mr. Obekpa at the basket.

There isn't a team in the country that plays 'small', like we do, that we don't match up well against. We should beat LBS, the Hall, and Butler. And against the top ten team that's made their name playing small - nova - we're a 50-50 shot.

And speaking of nova - does anyone else think it's not fair that our guys have to leave after 4 years but Pinkston's been there a decade?

So you think we match up well against Kentucky?

No one matches up against Kentucky… but I don't think it obviates my point. They aren't what I'd call a 'small' team.

Happy that LBSU played Saturday and then had to travel, because we had a big energy spend in the 2nd half Friday night, especially SDP and D'Lo. LBSU appears to be deep and athletic, and those are the kind of teams that can give you trouble if you don't have fresh legs.

@CerasolisGhost: Long Beach State has had a top-10 KenPom non-conf SOS every season since 2009-10. Ranked 2nd this year, still to play @ SJU, Cuse, Lville

Interesting point coming out of there that Harrison is leading the Big East in scoring individually but we are 8/10 in the conference in team PPG. D'Lo is going to need more consistent help putting points on the board as we move towards conference play.

Also love this from Lavin: ''The concern would be if (Friday would have been) a road game in the Big East, we would find ourselves down 30 at Villanova.''

I'm not concerned about ppg. IF we were running it up and down the court, we'd have more points. We are not a good shooting team, and we are chewing up clock in the half court offense, making the extra pass frequently instead of just launching. It's funny that anecdotally at least, it seems that Jordan is most likely to launch when he gets a touch, even his first touch of the game, than anyone else. Without looking at stats, I'm sure our defense ppg allowed is conversely very good. In terms of Big East rankings though, comparatively means nothing since the OOC games are against very different types of competition.

lol. This is a funny post.
We had two day to rest, and that was our only game since Sunday.
In college, you'll see 1 or 2 games per week or maybe 3 games in a week.

I won't worry about this until october, where we'll play everyday in the BE tourny
