LJ Status

It's also not unreasonable to think he may be a bit influenced by what happened to his good friend Mustapha when he came back for his senior year.

On the other hand I think Ponds wishes he had.

Not sure about that. I don't think he would have fit in too well.

Ponds would have had to buy in on the conditioning piece. Would have been interesting to see because it would have made him a much better player.

He’s a much better fit for team and system than Mustapha was.

Hoping he is just looking to see what flaws may be perceived in his overall game to work on. Gut feeling he returns.

So do I

I thought CMA went further than most coaches typically do in this situation. Players look for their coach to promote their ability and potential. You usually don't see the coach publicly admit the player is is not quite ready.[/quote]
See Pete Carroll re: Mark Sanchez.

Very true. Tough decision for these kids to make, especially now. Would imagine he's talked to both Shamorie & Justin about their thoughts on leaving early and perhaps picked Marvin's brain about playing overseas. Also no doubt that the current pandemic might influence both his and his family's view on being far away from home. I have a feeling he stays but we'll see.

I was left with the same impression after listening to the interview. I can’t imagine that sat well with LJ and his handlers. Also not a great look for recruits. It’s one thing to give honest feedback in private, it’s another thing not to be entirely supportive in public.

Exactly my thought. However, this is not CMA's first rodeo. Perhaps LJ has already decided to return and is truly just going through the evaluation process.

It is not Coach Anderson’s job to lie for a player. What kind of credibility would a Coach have if he says all his kids are NBA players? What benefit is there to lying to a kid and his family or handlers if the kid isn’t good enough or “ready”.
In fact maybe for some of these kids it’s time for some tough love. I believe that if the player and coach have a good and open relationship then the honesty is appreciated and will be received well by the player.
The reality is no matter what any coach says, GM’s and scouts don’t need anyone else’s opinion. If a kid is good enough they will be drafted.

And they didn't talk for five years afterward.

I didn’t think CMA’s comments were out of line. He said he is a versatile player who had to adapt to a new system who has some things to work on and that the NBA will clarify that for him. That is all true. He clearly seems to want LJ back. This is a tough time for LJ at 23 to make a decision as he won’t be drafted and would need to fight to make a team. It’s not clear when that will happen and there isn’t much money to be made overseas with no fans in the seats.

No coach worth a dime would hold back a kid who wants to leave and is likely to get drafted.

We've just got done heaping praise on CMA for the improvement of several under regarded players, and how his coaching paved the way for the team finishing on an up note, likely receiving an NIT bid.

I don't think CMA wants to feed into the "hope and dreams" that LJ's advisors may be feeding to him. It seems like half the NBA draft are foreign players, and most of the rest are underclassmen. How many upperclassmen have gotten drafted without even making their own all-conference first, second, or honorable mention teams?

I think the conventional thinking around SJU is that if LJ wants to play overseas and has his heart set on it, then they would advise him to go with their blessing. However, if he somehow thinks his name will be called in the NBA draft, and would lose a year of eligibility in the process of not getting drafted, then perhaps CMA is doing him a favor by a public statement.

Lastly, I think CMA thinks that he can put LJ in a better position to showcase NBA talent, by both working with him next season and surrounding him with better talent so he doesn't have to do it all.

I'm 100% inclined to give CMA my confidence that he is doing the right thing for this kid and all of his kids.

Pardon my French, but it’s close to “shit or get off the pot time,” for LJ.
