LJ Eligible

I really don’t care if he’s eligible. Good for him. It’s really not about LJ. Moved on long ago. Of course, compare this to Dunn and how they treated him.

However, LJ really had no valid reason for the transfer other then he wanted to play ball somewhere else. That’s fine. No sick family member in the DR. No story about how Oregon is closer to his sick mother/grandfather/Aunt. Nothing. No story about Eugene, Oregon is really closer to Santo Domingo in the DR.

Time for the NCAA to stop the charade and open up the transfer rules so we can end the farce and realize free agency in college sports is here.
NCAA a joke. Eligible. Why
Because they were giving immediate eligibility to 95% of the players. And then they looked foolish not letting the other 5% get it. I see the point but also was hoping LJ would be the only player who didn't get it.

I have no animosity towards LJ at all. While I questioned his shot selection last season, I thought he usually played hard.
In fact, I'm glad he is eligible. If I have a tough time sleeping, I can always turn on ESPN or Fox Sports at 2 in the morning to watch Oregon play some other West Coast team I don't care about.

With no m as lice towards him, based on what we saw last season I think we are better off without him.

I don't believe he is a dead eye 3 point shooter no matter what the numbers say. It was also an adventure when he put the ball on the floor flying to the hoop.

He left for a reason. I don't think he was going to be allowed to play like that this season by CMA with all the new talent. At this point Julian is a much better player and will get more looks as a result of LJ being gone.

That being said, i hope LJ has a great season. He gave us a lot of moments.

I'd still rather have LJ than not have him. It isn't just his scoring we will miss...it's the defense. He has a very good nose for the ball and that's what you need if you want lots of fast break points off steals. Last season he chucked too much. But overall, he's still a double-digit scorer who we could use right now. Cole does not come close to replacing him so far like we had hoped. Can't say he's a freshman either...he's a JR technically. Big step from JUCO to major hoops, I get it. But I remember my snap reaction hearing him transfer was more "oh crap that will hurt". We could have lost Ponds and many fans would say "addition by subtraction" lol. I think many say that kind of thing to help cope rather than actually meaning it.

Ponds and LJ are two different types. Ponds had all the ability in the world to be able to play for Anderson, but would have been tough to corral to play the way CMA wanted him to. It wasn't for lack of trying for Mullin/St. Jean. I know that for a fact. I think LJ knew he wasn't going to get the ball as much and be THE focal point of the offense here. I think he saw that with the depth we had here that his minutes would go down a little. Finally I think he is hoping that like Tariq Owens, he will get more national exposure in his final season than he would have with a projected 9th place BE team. And likely he had some issues playing for CMA or in his system, but who really knows?

LJ is not on my radar of interest, but when you think of Oregon in recruiting process always factor in “incentives”. LJ camp went shopping. His & his camp’s approach leaving Mike & staff in lurch irked many of us for good reason. I’m glad when I look at the type of players we have he chose to go. Rear view mirror time is well past over.

Figueroa was smart to transfer.

Had Figueroa returned to St. John's his playing time this season would have been substantially reduced with the arrival of Vince Cole and others.

CMA requires his players to be focused on team play and will not play players who are auditioning for a contract to play in Europe or Asia.

St. John's does not need Figueroa. Figueroa doesn't need St. John's.

This is only the beginning ! With the new NCAA transfer rules next year recruiting will be going on all over --My hunch is it has already started. Dont you think we could easily have Julian and or Posh gone next year ? We should be looking for a Big who isnt happy somewhere !!

Wow...I'm surprised some think Cole would start over LJ. It's still super early, but so far outside of 1 red hot game, I have been a bit concerned. I just don't think we run a competent half court offense which is the type Cole would be most successful in. Designed plays to get him to catch and shoot. Not sure he has the handles to always convert in crazy back and forth play. Cole and Moore have buttery hands. Who would you trust more in the post and mid range and to finish? I'd say LJ easily there so far. He had lots of crazy floaters but they went in a lot. His first year here was fantastic...his last year was bad because he was not selective or efficient. Like Paultz said, I figured Oregon paid for him.

Remember, LJ almost left us the year before he actually did decide to leave. He was an exciting player but not w/o his faults and I suspect is an example of a player that is not happy to play in CMAs system.
Will watch how he does with Oregon but I am fine with the team we have; his leaving has given Wusu an opportunity for the kind of playing time he wouldn't have gotten as a frosh if LJ stayed.
Onward and upward.

The new “Wild West” transfer rules will impact most teams, but further destroy the low D1 teams like a Robert Morris who find diamonds in rough often only to be poached. Immediate eligibility will worsen that, but at least it is a one time limit. Throw in COVID extra year and roster planning will be quite a challenge.

Think of how stupid this was. What exactly was the NCAA reviewing? LOL. Yet he missed a game. Why? An empty file doesn’t take long to review.

If you look at the article it indicates the NCAA is thinking about making all pending transfers immediately eligible. Said something about CoVid. That’s absurd most of these transfers were before CoVid. Whole thing is absurd and an exercise in stupidity.

Don't even think it's worth debating. It's clear LJ didn't want to be here because he did not want to commit to the system CMA has in place. He wanted to be the focal point so he could showcase himself for the next level. He doesn't seem like someone too keen on the tough love you get when playing for CMA, and in reality it would not have been a good situation for team chemistry. Had he been willing to commit to that, he would have been a great player to retain.

That being said, I will still have fond memories of his time here. He was an exciting player to watch for two years.

As if the NCAA wanted to get any Crazier , the idea of allowing Players to transfer at will from 1 School to another , destroys any semblance of the Student -Athlete definition . It would encourage Poaching of Players by other Schools . The idea of Justin moving to Pitt to play with his Brother or Vice Versa is mind boggling . Posh to Kansas or Duke is equally numbing . The 1 Year Sit out Rule for transfers was designed to prevent a Player transferring merely for individual enrichment or more PT or any one of dozens of reasons . It required the Player to give serious thought to exiting a School . Now , it’s going to be a Free Agency Circus , especially if the Virus continues and the 1 year waiting period is waived .

Definitely a big deal...but I think players will stay if we have a clear system, clear expectations, family atmosphere, and we win consistently. Sure there will always be some upset over PT even on winning teams and transfer, but I don't see anything changing that much except rich getting richer and poor getting poorer which always happens anyway. The best recruits are still being paid at the end of the day. We are the upper middle class of college basketball conference wise I'd say. Better to be near top of pecking order or somewhere in upper middle here. Mid majors and low majors will get hurt the most IMO. Think Dayton, Robert Morris as Paultz said, STL, VCU, and even teams like Vermont. If we keep recruiting the right kids to fit and do a good job evaluating them not just as players, but as men (take GW and his father for example, very good people who trust CMA completely) then we should hopefully take less of a hit than others. Should still be enough to go around. It's a matter of convincing them to come here.
