Let's be honest.

Is Calipari even a good game coach?Literally every NBA all star went to Kentucky. I know Kentucky could sell itself and Cal is shady but he can walk into any recruits living room and start rattling off names.
Right... so I think this is you agreeing with me? Cause Kentucky obviously gets so many one and dones, but that doesn't necessarily translate to CBB success especially now with the portal and NIL. Let them have their fair share of one and dones. This year they got bounced by a 23 year old who is 5'8 and will never sniff being a first round pick.

I'm cool with being the team that wins in the NCAA Tournament because we have a roster full of guys who have years of college basketball experience who are being coached by Rick Pitino.

I'd love 5 stars and lottery picks too, don't get me wrong, but I am not going to place limitations on what our teams can do just because they may not have guys showing up in mock drafts

Just to clarify my prior post, when I say that we still have question marks on the roster, I'm talking about things like:

how will the mid-major kids do at this level? how will unproven kids like Zuby, Traore and Dunlap perform?
How will an entirely new team mesh together?
etc, etc.

I absolutely love the depth and balance of our roster. We have size, athleticism, shooting and ball handling. Real balance like we haven't had in a long time. We also have kids who are all hopefully going to completely buy in to the coach's vision, and run through a brick wall for him.

So my "concerns" are really just me being my usual cautious self heading in to next season.
Completely agree Monte. To me the question marks are mostly the good kind of questions which posters have already started batting around - who will start, will we go big or small at the 4 spot, how deep will Pitino go in spreading playing time etc. I haven't seen most of these kids play, or if I have, maybe in one or two games so really curious to see them play, especially in league play. But I do not question that we will field a very competitive team and would expect us to be picked easily in top half of the league in BE coaches poll. I'd frankly be very surprised if we don't dance and not talking about Dunlaps' dancing.

Yes and No Jack
Pitino obviously a better coach than Cal and do not need 10 one and done to win. But would be nice to sprinkle one or two in every couple of years. The longer you go with NBA drought the harder it becomes to attract those kids.

i agree re-sprinkling them in. Would love that. It would help

I just dont like the whole "i look at this roster and don't see any first round picks, lets temper our expectations". It doesn't work that way. not with the way college basketball is these days

I was told by Carmine Calzonetti who was one of Looie's assistants (also an outstanding player) that Looie told his coaches he wanted one number one draft pick per year on his roster. That's all he required.

Oh, and thanks for the kind comments on this thread.

cool but Looie ain't coaching in 2023

why do we need first round picks in the NBA draft to be successful in college basketball?

Thinking we need that, to me, shows a clear misunderstanding of where modern college basketball is
Agreed Jack, how many did Kansas St or Florida Atlantic have last year?

I think you are confusing Lou with John Wooden.

I understand Larry, but actually our drought as a program is not that long with regard to getting a player in the NBA. Champagnie is there.

Here's the thing NCJ,!we have options. Viable options. So if Zuby isn't ready to contribute in a significant way next season, maybe Zlazinski gets the bulk of the minutes at the 4, or maybe we play small(er) ball more often. Lots of very good pieces that our great coach will figure out how to put together to create the best possible team.

I guess it depends on what your goals are. Final four teams are, as a rule with some exceptions, littered with 1st round picks.
