Kentan Facey, PF UConn Verbal

Pre-Lavin we would have killed to get a kid like this to commit to SJU.

Depending on how it goes with our other top priorities, we still may kill to get him.

Perspective-

We have 13 scholarship players. We lose 1 this year. (Maybe another)

If we strike out on recruits (highly unlikely) we will still have 12 scholarship players. Hardly a need to kill for anything at that point.

If Harrison and Sampson leave early - which some posters on this board have speculated - that would make for three players to replace. Harrison and Sampson will almost certainly be our top two scorers. If those guys are leaving early, that probably means we will have had a pretty good year; which is a good problem to have. On the other hand will need to scramble a bit to replace those guys. "Kill" isn't a word I would use to apply to us at that point, but we'd definitely be in need of a some solid replacements.

Personally I don't see either leaving next year (especially Jakarr). And like you said if one or both leave then we had a pretty damn good year.

Staff had no early recruits this year if we all recall and pulled together a damn good class all late. So if players leave they can plug holes and obviously sell a great opportunity to replace early NBA departures. Again I don't see those two leaving but I wouldnt be shocked if another schollie opened.

Hadn't Ricardo G. already committed at this time last summer?

I was referring to the early signing period but yes he did as well as Darrick prior to that.

The original "kill" came from 'north. And if we whiff on Martin and Lawrence then Facey becomes big man prority #1. Since coach has apparently targeted three potential bigs for next year then Kentan becomes someone we could commit justifiable homicide for.

I originally didn't think that Moe made the right decision to go pro, but he ended up going in the middle of the 1st round. I was hoping that Sampson can pull off the same thing - but i might have to re-assess my expectations for Sampson based on what you are saying.

My original thought process: I was kinda hoping that young Mr. Sampson turns in a Moe part II. They are the same height and I believe that Sampson is supposed to have even more athletic ability. Moe's long-range game wasn't great at all and he had a decent mid-range jump shot, but he didn't even have to use it all that much because he played out of position... Supposedly Jakarr's mid-range game is improving.

My dream scenario (at least as far as dreams go for college basketball) is that Sampson gets recognized for his spectacular athletic ability, gets drafted in the 1st round and St. John's galvanizes its position as the new hot destination for spectacular small forwards who want to be on a team that gets out and runs up and down the court.... St. John's becomes the new "Small-Forward U" with top 30 kids making a beaten path to our door - How do you like the sound of that? :)

But it is a wake-up call that you think that Jakarr will stay beyond his 1st year. I know that you have a better idea of the recruits better than I do... so i'll try to re-set the bar on my over-enthusiastic expectations/hopes...

I think I would rather have the kid from Monroe CC than Facey

Just a gut but- this doesnt stick.

I was also about to say the same, Moose.

Why do both of you think he'll change?

Just a feeling you get at times. Not to mention, the dynamics at UConn could change in the next few months. On another note, I'm not sweating this commitment. We're still in the thick of things for Martin and Lawrence, and we'll probably end up on the list of a couple of other kids before this is said and done.

He just recently blew up and had big time schools poking around and even 'offering'.

He visited Uconn, came home saying he would visit STJ and Rutgers and then same night commits to Uconn?

Calhoun wasn't there and his future as we know is as volatile as a junk bond.

I'm not saying he will change his mind and flip to STJ at all. Just saying I wouldnt be shocked if this was premature.

he also said he became a big yukon fan watching their run to the championship..So unless he gets recruited over I think he'll stick. Guess he missed us blowing them out at msg during the season B)
