David Caraher on Chris Mullin: “He told us that he loves us, that he’s going through some things with his personal life, that he needs to step away, and I respect that. It was definitely emotional." #sjubb

This dumpster fire is no matter for a very risky Hurley hire. He has 0 experience building a program, 2 years at lowly Buffalo, and a pac 12 losing record at ASU do not impress me. He has no experience turning around a dumpster fire, and if smart he will stay where he is. Only one man has faced the dumpster fire and built a monster program! Rick did it at Kentucky after Sutton landed them on probation. This is a level 5 dumpster fire

Can we get a security detail on Hurley for 72 hours before Tom Bradley makes Danny have a “what’s in the box?!” moment?

This job has taken its toll on Chris. He had good intentions in year one. Although the record was lousy he and Slice were everywhere. Then that following Spring it all started going south. Kiera wanted to go back to California and her friends. Mullin obliged, sold the house he bought just months earlier and his wife and daughter returned to the Bay area. Then the rift with Slice that was instigated by Matt. The resulting decision to go with Matt at the expense of his associate head coach left many to question his decision making. He was rarely seen on the recruiting trails after that and had to negotiate time between west and east coasts. Then last year Rod became ill and Mullin became torn in 3 directions. Knowing about Rod's situation since last summer I was perplexed that last September Mullin failed to make an appearance at the Dribble for the Cure. That's when I started to feel he was emotionally detaching himself even more from the basketball program. Although this past season started with great hope it all started to feel eerily similar to previous seasons when the team would lose focus more often as the competition became tougher. Losing, especially in the final month of the season, was a bitter experience for Mullin with all the personal drama going on in his family. I don't think he was serious about an extension and he is more relieved than angry at the lack of support from the very top of the administration. This job was never for him and all that has transpired was predicted by many. Hopefully the President has learned that you need to hire the best to compete with the best. If the end result is we only look at Hurley and Cluess then he learned nothing and he should also start looking elsewhere.

I concur with Moose. Nice post '72.

@AdamZagoria

Sources: St. John’s AD Mike Cragg met with the players today and informed them they could get releases if they want to transfer. Expect some transfers forthcoming.

The AD said he would support each player’s individual decision re: his future.
Obviously the players were upset yesterday not hearing from any SJ folks about Rothstein tweet on Chris stepping down. Hopefully someone can calm things down with remaining players as soon as possible. Imo this situation should have been handled much better.
Absolutely!

So Heron, LJ, Williams, and Earlington are the only ones left?
Just about, along with the sit out transfers.
Actually, might be better chance that Hurley can bring players along with him.

Sounds like a rebuild for Rick, if we want a quick fix. Sure, we can hire Bobby, but we'll suck for atleast the first 3 years. It's all up to what the bosses at sju want though.
And picked up an offensive foul doing it. ... Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a big man miss so many shots within 12 inches of the basket. That said, good luck to him at his next school or wherever. It's our staff's fault -- and not his -- that he was misjudged as a Big East -caliber talent.

I get the hesitation on Cluess, 72, but you don't think Hurley is a solid candidate here?

I disagree that Pitino is our only choice here.
While, I agree, reluctantly, that he’s the stud that’d revive us in a blink—that ain’t happening.
So why be delusional about it?
The next best choice is, obviously, Bobby Hurley.
No question, imo, he would rebuild this program within 2 years.
The guy is a workaholic, a very solid x&o guy, and a recruiting bloodhound.
Should we fail on Hurley, we’re in deep doo-doos.
I default to Cluess in that dire scenario.
You guys favor others.
Fine. The crystal clear epiphany is, we need the ‘best’ Plan B option that could be triggered in about 48 hours following Hurley’s ‘nyet’. (Praying that’s not the case!)
Here we go.
Only St. John’s...!

With the benefit of being able to look back, Mullin, in my opinion, made two crucial errors. As referenced above, siding with Matt over Rohrssen was the wrong choice, and having Mitch on the staff left us with a permanent recruiting disadvantage.
Why did he need to choose one vs the other ?
There are some here who know better what transpired in year one, but the impression I got was the two assistants were at odds and could not work together, as a team. It was up to Mullin to either reconcile them or, if that was not feasible, then you have to choose one and dismiss the other. The fact that Rohrssen had the six year, expensive contract, and was listed as the Associate Head Coach were additional considerations.

So my thoughts are as a head coach everyone won't always get along whether players or assistants and your job is to get the most out of everybody.Clearly he decided to choose the assistant who had brought in the most players but based on not replacing Rohrssen or being interested in recruiting it seems his fate was sealed by an inability to manage people. Great Player though.

For those of you that like the idea (even a little) of filling our coaching vacancy with Cluess, please tell me why. What other major programs are knocking on his door? I just don't understand the infatuation.

ouch :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Why would Keita leave now when the position of guarding the other team's PG (his favorite thing to do) is wide open?
