Agree. It's not all or nothing, and for all of the praise being sent Cragg's way - deservedly - this element was very poorly executed. Understand it may have happened "outside of Cragg's control", but when you are leading a process like this as the AD you need to make it within your control. Cannot, under any circumstances, have the players not hear definitive communication from the school. After days - literally days - of rumors which they obviously became aware of, some update should have been provided. They don't deserve to get caught in the crosshairs of a coaching change they didn't ask for any more than they already will be. The program is about the players and it doesn't appear this was handled properly as to them.
Why does it always seem so dramatic at SJU? Dozens of schools change coaches every year, and somehow ours always seems to have more flair than most. Potentially less excusable for SJU given all the practice it has doing exactly this :)
You’d think we’d be pros at firing coaches by now. How many firings have Kathy Meehan and co. overseen? We literally lead the country in firing coaches the last 25 years. #1!

How is any of this a surprise to anyone? How were the players not notified?

Chris Mullin informed the players about his decision this afternoon, per team source. News caught them by surprise. #sjubb

So now we believe Zach B on his tweets...

Apparently today, but to be clear zero communication with players last evening after story broke.
Cragg losing points by the minute. I find it hard to believe that he doesn’t have a replacement eight days after he met with Mullin. Alabama had Oates seemingly overnight.
Totally agree on the day he accepts the resignation of his HOF coach to not have someone named to replace him is criminal...

I think Cragg should step down and be replaced by Dick Hurtz....

Yeah, but my understanding of the situation is that by not granting the asked-for extension, Cragg essentially handed Mullin a loaded gun and said "You pull the trigger."
What was Cragg supposed to tell the players? "I think your coach may be resigning shortly? Stay tuned!" He couldn't say anything until Mullin made his move.

I have not read all the posts here but please keep in mind the student athletes of this program this is not some fortune 500 company making changes with employees able to just switch jobs. This impacts emotionally and professionally the student athletes in unfair ways. I hope they were given the news face to face before it was mad public.

Agree. Cragg was in a very tight box. He knew Mullin would not accept not being extended and being a lame duck, but the timing was all Chris’s to reflect on and maybe unsuccessful attempt to reverse with calls above Cragg.
Hopefully Cragg will soon announce the new coach and our roster departures will cease.

In that case I hope Zach is right. My importance of returning order list goes as

1. Lj
2. Williams
3. Roberts

Don’t see the transfers leaving. Heron would be great to help the new coach for the season but wouldn’t be a huge loss for the future but that’s just my opinion. Those 3 should be here for more than a season, hopefully 3 more for the bottom two.

Happy to hear those 3 + Heron, plus Earlington still on the roster.
A roster of Heron, Figgy, Williams, Wright, Steere, Manuel, Roberts, Caraher, Earlington would not be a bad ‘start’ for a new HC with college and AAU and HS links.
4 ‘ships’ to fill to begin with 2 PGs.
Lol.
But anxiously waiting for that HC announcement.

According to Zach B, LJ and Greg will wait things out, so I would like our chances on keeping those two.
I don't understand why all of these kids wouldn't at least wait things out and see who the new coach is and hear the pitch. If they transferred that quickly, you have to think they had plans to do so anyway.

I'm told St. John's commit Valdir Manuel has heard from Chris Mullin and he remains in flux about his future. Face-up scoring forward who played at @patrickschool and is now at Harcum (PA) College.

Holding breath might not be advised here.

Wouldn't Mustapha coming back and loving the new coach impact favorably on Tabor's potential for recommitting?

It would be wise for him to look elsewhere.
