Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Not here to just be a contrarian but the obsession with last years players is unexplainable to me; IMO an unwatchable group of players, borderline “unrootable”, in which a highly respected coach who was there every single day would not vouch for any of them. They had talent but it takes WAY more than talent to win at this level; thank God Pitino knows this in spades.

How much of that falls on the coach and his lack of control? There is no way they try any of that under Pitino.

I could root for some of the group, but it really was a “cut & past” squad emblematic of freelancing and lack of discipline . The Curbelo addition was a team chemistry killer and staff could not figure out how to employ Jones. All in all, the group lacked cohesion, concentration and interest in working together.

Anderson had a suitable background to be considered to run things, but one wonders if he lost his fastball and got stuck in the past with his “40 minutes of hell” mantra v learning & adapting to change.

I don't think it is an obsession with last year's or previous years' players. I think most here are happy with the current trajectory and players. The point is that there's a recognition that maybe we did not have to suffer through more than 2 decades of mostly miserable basketball had we only had a decent coach out of the past several. Talent needs coaching. We have it now, but it has been a long hard time as a fan. And, it is nice to see some players that we liked do well after they've moved on. That's all.

I've also noticed how some on here are now saying we should have kept some of these players, meanwhile while they were here last year people didn't think they were very good.

Very fair points, being honest and frank, maybe my post was motivated by the fact I didn’t like most of them as players.

For me, and that's just me, anyone who put on a St. John's uniform and didn't behave in a way that embarrassed the university is an old friend and I enjoy seeing them do well in their future endeavors whether at another school, in the NBA or overseas. Posh, David Jones, Storr, Stanley & King all fit that definition along with many others.

Why? Because I have a different opinion from most? Why not tell me why you think I’m wrong, isn’t that kind of the purpose of sites like this, you know, an exchange of thoughts and ideas.

Of course you can post a different opinion. But if you don’t like reading about former players that played here last year then skipping this tread was simply a suggestion.

It has NOTHING to do with not wanting to read about former players, I thoroughly enjoy reading about many of them. It has everything to do with reading about wishing players were still here who publicly embarrassed their coach in huddles (and far from being only Curbelo), who consistently exhibited horrible body language during games, who played for themselves, rather than as a team. Players who could not get a “chemistry” (for want of a better term) endorsement from an experienced, stand up coach whom I admire. A group of players I personally could not root for, emphasis on personally; with the exception of Soriano and King (whose game I liked, the little of it I saw).

To each their own, no?

Peculiar post. So Posh ‘played for himself, rather than the team?’ You won’t get Thad Matta to agree with that, or for that matter any of his current or former team-mates….

Who mentioned any players names other than Curbelo? Obviously all the underachievers don’t fit into every category. And oh, by the way, if you didn’t notice, last year was last year, this year is this year.

Absolutely, 100%, the only opinion I express is my own. I certainly respect that other people have their own. With all due respect, you were the one giving me a “suggestion”.
