Kante Out?

let's spend some money on paying recruits instead of raises :)

Or maybe another recruiter to help out. Especially since our coach elected to get his hip operated on during an important time.

wouldn't mind spending some $ on an extra order of Rice

and if this was a case of a silent verbal gone bad then they are starting to stink as much as silent farts

Too bad the opposite doesn't work as much where lots of quality players from smaller cities/states want to flock to NYC.

We have players from California, Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Europe and Afrika.

4 of those 6 were transfers....I get your point though and fair.

Aside from Ponds, we have not done much to have a ton of confidence that all the effort being put into Brown, Muhammad, Reid etc will result in the local kids staying home as freshman.

Disconcerting if true. But, we should still have one of the top backcourts n all of college bb, and hopefully improved play by Yakwe and more improvement by Owens.

This team may well look a little like the Artest team where we were basically 5 very talented versatile guys all playing the 1-4. Maybe Simon can turn out to be a poor man's version of RonRon.

In any event this team will have to play small and fast. Hopefully they will defend better, and whatever they get out of the post will be gravy.

I still expect this team, with a year more under its belt, and some upgraded talent, to be better than last year, and a solid NIT team and possible NCAA bubble team.

I just don't get it. I understand we are not a top 10 program yet but why wouldn't bigs transfer here: Tons of PT, exposure to the big apple, MSG, hof instruction, and most importantly playing with amazing guards. I just don't get it, it shouldn't be that hard. WTF? !!!!!

Hope you're right, although the players had played together for years (which is why the coach's lack of ability was not exposed that season).

The next year's team was also a big man away from really making some noise. Always wondered why the staff couldn't come up with a big for the following season...

Jarvis had many deficiencies (e.g., character and recruiting), but coaching wasn't one of them. I think he got the most out of those teams. Remains to be seen what this staff will do with some talent and experience.

Couldn't agree more. That should be enough for one of these bigs to end up here, just ONE. Maybe there's still too many question marks around our inexperienced coaching staff? We're going to be right back here next year, same spot, needing a mix of transfers for post positions, and maybe even backcourt. Perhaps a winning record, and some marquee wins puts us in a better position.

And this shouldn't matter, but Kante's last visit (I believe) was a raw, windy, heavy rain kind of day. His Georgia visit probably had a summer like day with a "lot to look at" during a walk around campus.

Exactly. And we are not talking about trying to land a 5-star. We are coming up completely empty on landing an average body to log 8-10 minutes. It's actually very surprising.

Not specific to Kante's individual decision, but what's a little curious about the lack of traction this cycle is that the picture seems much more clear than the last two.

Yawke, Sima, Mussini, Williams, Owens, and Lovett staff was putting together a roster quickly (and impressively) but the main thing they had to sell was opportunity.

Ponds, Ahmed, Simon, Clark and retaining Lovett there wasn't much more to sell, but staff had more time to develop those recruitments. Roster was also somewhat crowded, at least by the time Simon/Clark came aboard, even if all players weren't great and factoring in transfers. At a minimum each of these players had "safer" options so very impressive gets across the board.

Now there are at least some more tangible things to sell (a 14 win season, core returning players) and the roster situation seems more clear (probably not a place a guard would want to come short term, obvious opportunity for a big). Seems like there would be less uncertainty for prospective recruits.

I understand Simon and Clark are technically part of this year's class, and that Dixon is already in the fold for 2018. Just seems like SJU should be more of a quality option now for the right player than it's been the last 2 years, and the results have been less. The 2016 cycle in particular was so impressive that this just seems a little odd, ups and downs of recruiting I suppose.

Sorry but you are DEAD WRONG here. Jarvis had some talent on his teams but I specifically remember him calling time outs and just sitting there in his huddle and staring at them.....when play resumed, a player ( Cook usually ) would launch a distant 3 and clang.....worst use of time outs ever...oh did you not forget the "Fire Jarvis" chants? How about him destroying all our NYC ties that we still are recovering from. Jarvis goes down as disastrous in my book. Oh his elite 8 talent wasn't his coaching, it was his players trust me.

Ehh. I attribute a lot of the success those two years to the caliber of the players and their familiarity with each other rather than Jarvis running the weave against a zone. Agree that the jury is out on the current staff.

Win and they will come

Getting away probably to nice campus in Athens, Georgia is a good thing for Kante. Can't blame him, although disappointed. Also, I believe they were recruiting him before SJU.

Paultz, this is exactly why I asked this morning.

We were all counting him as part of the solution and we obviously were far out in front of our skis once again. Like I said, I'll just wait until September to see who actually shows up on campus.

I gave you my opinion & never said it was a lock. Next time ignore it. :)

Paultz, no offense was intended. I apologize if that is what you heard in my post. I fully appreciate your sharing what you hear. No doubt CM and MA themselves were probably taken by surprise.

I understood that Kante was pending an announcement next week (I believe you had posted that info). In reading through the posts many seemed to think it was a done deal. That is why I originally asked yesterday morning. I even think ZB from the NY Post thought we were in a good spot with Kante. I have just learned through the years with SJU is that when dealing with kids nothing is done until someone signs and in some cases nothing is done until they show up on campus and have been cleared by the NCAA.

I don't remember Jarvis being a good coach. I do remember him being the foremost fan of Mike Jarvis.

just a theory but maybe Matt shouldn't be recruiting big men. Maybe his specialty is people closer to his height. How tall is St Jean ? :)

6'4" . . . a full 18 inches taller than Matt.

Maybe that is how Mullin decides who draws up plays. He holds dry board over his head and only ST Jean can reach it.

So no Kante? Well, what happened? I thought Kante was a sure thing?
So it's May now and yet no big man addition, we all knew that was our biggest priority.

Well I'll say it again: Next year it's at the least the NIT or bust.
